The Gardener's Gazette, edition 15

The Gardener's Gazette

Welcome to the fifteenth edition of the The Gardener's Gazette!  The Gazette is a monthly newspaper with the purpose of keeping both gardeners and guests informed on the happenings within the Card Gardening Society.

Garden Insight
by Giovanniland

Welcome to our monthly Garden Insight, where we inform people about key happenings in the Society during the last month, this time the month of August. Early in the month, the main Administrator The Unified Missourtama States had to take a week-long leave of absence, prompting Giovanniland to take care of the Gardens during this period. Some Gardeners tried to wreak havoc and annoy the interim person in charge, but those plans were discovered and order brought into the Society once again. Normal business such as giveaways happened smoothly, and soon TUMS would be back and ready to rule again.

The fourteenth edition of the Gazette was published soon after, featuring not only the usual articles but also another edition of the Garden Spotlight. Members reacted favorably to the news, although there was one funny error spotted by Vylixan—their name appeared twice with one win each in the giveaway table instead of once with two wins. This was quickly fixed by Publications Manager Gio of course, but it also sparked an interesting and light-hearted discussion about identity theft. That edition of the Gazette had also offered for any member wishing to publish their opinion on a card topic to write an article and have it featured in the next edition, however nobody contacted either of the Admins. Though the offer is still available, of course.

Later in the month, several real life topics were discussed, for example chess and its variants, state fairs, music, and anime. The Toolshed and Garden Displays were quieter than last month but still had a few messages, while the Farmers' Market of course stayed active and even had some debates between traders over certain cards. Meanwhile, talking about card topics, the month was certainly eventful:

One of the earlier conversations was about the mysterious Cash Concentrator, which has been famous in the community for gifting pull event hosts any cards they find in the respective pull events, as well as other cards to various member and non-member card traders alike, including both legendary and inflated common cards. Their ability to quickly respond to certain conversations on the main Trading Cards Discord server with card gifts has been compared to other previous mysterious people like Leto ii atreides and N00027 (later found out to be Noahs Second Country), who were active in the last year. This has created hot debates about who is behind the account, and whether they are a known card trader or simply a generous observer.

Other themes were the happenings of August 22nd, in which both Giovanniland and then Mikeswill took first place in the deck value leaderboards after surpassing Koem Kab, who has been inactive for months now. Finally, in the end of the month, the possible changes to how cards are generated were also a topic of debate. It has been known for some time that card farms need issues to earn packs, but the mindless answering of issues ends up messing the stats used by Issues Editors to determine if an issue choice is too often or too rarely chosen and make changes to balance them, besides creating unnecessary load on the server. Proposed changes were tying the generation of packs to the Best Nation in the World minigame, released as the April Fools 2021 event, or create an entirely new minigame inspired by the real life card game Yahtzee, although some Gardeners did not agree with either.

Last but not least, it is a tradition to mention in this Garden Insight all new members that joined the Gardens recently, or rather only one member this time around. Welcome to Eshialand, the newest member of our Society! Stay tuned for the next edition of this summary.

Winners of the Month
by Giovanniland

During the month of August, thirteen giveaways happened, which is one less than July. Notable legendaries awarded were New Good Order and Cavallino33, whose nations have ceased to exist and continue in this status to this day, making the supply of their cards lower and thus raising their prices. One interesting happening was that there was no Gardener winning more than one giveaway during August, which is a drastic change in comparison to July with four members winning two giveaways each. Therefore, thirteen separate members each won either a Legendary card or a nice Epic package, and the full list of them can be seen below:

Monthly Contest Results and Update
by Giovanniland

In the last Gazette edition, another Garden of the Month collection contest had been announced, with summer as the theme and with rules similar to previous collection contests. Submissions closed at 23:59 UTC on Saturday, 4th September, and sadly there was only one entry. Therefore, a Sub-Administrative Committee meeting was not required since there was nothing to actually judge on, and the only submission was automatically declared as the winner.

This entry is Vylixan's collection named "Beautiful sunrise. On a warm summer morning. I wait for day's start." and composed of over a hundred cards. A truly beautiful display of summer-themed artwork, which guaranteed Vylixan the nice prize of a Season 2 legendary card, namely Kaigi.

Now, onto this month's contest! After a few collection competitions, we decided to take a break and come up with something different. Some of our older members might remember a poetry contest, which took place during the months of January and February this year. We'll have something similar, except that instead of poetry, we now have a Card-Related Short Story Contest! Participants will have to write a short story that is related to cards, which may either be written in the player's perspective as a trader, or also in a roleplay sense depicting an in-context card auction, collection, or similar. Your imagination is the limit, as long as the theme is related to trading cards! The rules of the contest are as following, which are similar to the poetry contest's rules but with a few changes:

1. Only one entry per Gardener is allowed;
2. Participants must submit their entry to Giovanniland by Discord DM or NationStates telegram until 23:59 UTC of Sunday, October 3rd;
3. Submissions will be judged by the Sub-Administrative Committee. The winner will receive a Legendary card, and additional rewards may be sent out depending on the number of entrants;
4. Entries must:

  • be written in formal and proper English;

  • be related to NationStates Trading Cards;

  • follow NationStates & Discord rules;

  • have at most 1,500 words (there is no hard minimum limit, although use common sense here—a few words don't make up an entire story);

5. Plagiarism is strictly forbidden, resulting in punishment within the Society if found out;

Good luck writing, and may the best author win!

See you all next month for another Gardener's Gazette edition. Credits to Giovanniland for leading the newspaper publication and writing the articles! If you'd like to write, please contact our Administration to apply for the Gazette Writer position.
