The Carner Institute: The Shanul Beetle

Research regarding the nature of the Shanul Beetle. Research conducted by Cornelia Suitor, Jethro Poole, and Senara Nichols, with assistance from Awen Herly between the days of April 11th,2020, and June 13th, 2020. Report by Cornelia Suitor, Senior Researcher at the Carner Institute of Auberton. Awaits review from Principle Researcher.
The Shanul Beetle is a member of the Brachininae sub-family and is closely related to the Bombardier Beetle. However, where they split away is in what they project. While the Bombardier Beetle focuses on damaging acids to drive away predators and attack prey, the Shanul Beetle employs psychedelics instead to distract both predator and prey. Their spray has been observed on a variety of species, with all organisms that are hit by the spray being hit. These range from small animals like ants to large animals, including humans. However, this also extends to other organisms like plants, which raised our curiosity as plants have never been known to effected by such chemicals.

All organisms hit by the Shanul Beetle’s spray have been shown to hallucinate not just visually and audibly, but with other senses as well. One example was a subject reacting to a piece of fruit as if it were electrified. Another example was a human subject (voluntary, of course) who kept smelling smoke coming from a specific door despite no smoke being present. In plants, some have been shown to grow in directions that receive no sunlight and some flowers releasing pollen early. A non-Institute situation involving what we believe to be the Shanul Beetle was in October of 2019 when cryptozoologist Dr. Esteban Julio Ricardo Montoyo de la Rosario Ramirez was hospitalized after being sprayed by a mysterious liquid in Oryln, having experienced being transported to another realm of darkness.

Extraction of the Shanul Beetle’s spray were analyzed to learn the chemical make-up of the spray to find why its psychedelics were much stronger than any other animal-based psychedelics. All of the chemicals found within the spray are typical hallucinogenic chemicals, but their nature is where their difference lies. Beholder Awen Herly was brought in to observe and he was able to detect anomalous elements within the spray.

Further tests concluded that these elements are able to induce Illusory Hallucinations on those touched by the spray. Given the nature of the anomaly, both in its elements and in its manifestation, the spray does not need to be ingested nor enter the eyes, nose, or mouth to affect the subject as long as it makes physical contact with the subject. Its manifestation severely weakens the hallucinations ones is able to experience from this anomaly. Tests have also concluded that, despite the Shanul Beetle creating the spray with anomalous elements, they are not Esoteric Practitioners as they seem to have no say over what the victim of their spray hallucinates.

We affirm the conclusion of Investigator Cecilia Hallin that the Shanul Beetle meets the Institute’s criteria for Delirium Anomaly and be classified as an organic Phantasmagoria. However, we do not affirm her conclusion of the Shanul Beetle being a Liminal Anomaly as the story of Dr. Esteban was not studied by this Institution and such a conclusion cannot be met with consideration of the current research done on the organism.

Recommended procedure to be determined by Principal Researcher.
