Grenur Zix (WIP)

Grenur Zix

Grenur Zix
Grenur Zix is the founder of the Andromedan Free Systems, inventor of Decentralized Assemblism and an admiral of the Andromedan Black-White Fleet. Although he officially doesn’t have a lot of official power, Grenur is still pretty influential in the Free Systems, both politically and military.

Early life
Grenur was born in 2224 on the Ferdzez Station. Born into a family of asteroid miners, he quickly learned the ins and outs of space as a kid. In 2231, Grenur attended the Ferdzez Education Center, and started learning basic subjects like math, and the Andromedan Standard Language. During his school-years, Grenur proved itself to be quite a rebellious kid. In 2237, Grenur went to middle education, and learned more subjects like physics, and civics. It was during this time, that Grenur developed a talent in persuasion. He is very good at speaking to other people, and Grenur got some good friends this way. During this time in his life, he also developed a fascination with plants, and wanted to become a biologist. His lifegoal became seeing a planet full of life, just like what he had seen on all those pictures from before the Nano-Crisis. His dream of becoming a biologist was seemingly crushed when the government decided that it was better that Grenur became a miner, just like his parents. It was at this point that Grenur started to become resentful to the Galactic Council. In 2243, Grenur went to the Klap-Klap station to join a miner’s training program, where they learn to mine asteroids. During his time there, Grenur made a small garden in its room, in the hope of one day learning how to grow food, so he can feed himself and live more independently from society at large.

The Miner Years
In 2246, Grenur officially became an asteroid miner, and was deployed in the Clikta system to mine the mineral-rich asteroids from its belt. Grenur brought the garden he was making with it, and through the years became better at gardening, being able to grow small berry-like fruits. His years of mining was a point in Grenur’s life where he developed a second interest: engineering. When he got bored during his work (and that happens a lot), Grenur likes to tinker with some parts of the mining ship. When he got caught after one of its engineering projects, Grenur uses his persuasion skills to make up a good lie and keep himself out of trouble. During much of his mining years, nothing much of note happened in Grenur life. His often rebellious attitude keeps him from getting a promotion, and so Grenur was just another grunt of the Galactic Council, doing his job because he has to. Until something pretty important happened in his life. In 2253, the asteroid-miners went on a strike. Grenur also participated in it because he was dissatisfied with the working hours, and whished it was shorter. When the Council send some security personnel to force the strikers back to work, violence broke out. A short space-battle followed where the security quickly crushed the miners. Most of the ringleaders were arrested, and some of them were even killed during the fighting. Because of Grenur’s part in the strike, where he took down a few security ships with a modified mining laser, killing the pilots, he decided that the best course of action was to flee Council space, and hide in the hope that they will eventually forget about him.

Life in Exile
In 2253, Grenur fled to the Fhi-jaki system, and lived there for a while. It was at this point that Grenur had become good enough at farming that it could live of the food that it itself had grown. Water was mined from comets, and sunlight was plenty in space. But sometimes, that wasn’t enough, and Grenur had to resort to piracy to survive. The goods he stole from freighters where then sold at an outlaw-station so he can buy some essential needs. While not much of a reader, in his free time, Grenur wrote a digital book where he puts his thoughts on the state of the galaxy on paper... or digital file to be more accurate. While originally named "Examination", it is later on more often referred to as the "Free Systems Manifesto" . With his writing, Grenur became a pretty influential figure in the Andromedan underworld, gaining a following. In 2259, Grenur, alongside a group of outlaws and political dissidents founded a small group of stations that were independent from the Council. These stations where ruled by the people that reside in them, where sometimes meetings were held by the inhabitants where they talk about how they would govern their station. These stations are often seen as the precursors to the Andromedan Free Systems. Through the years, their society "off the grid" slowly grew as more stations were added. Grenur, who had learned a lot of space-combat from his days as pirate, became a commander of a small fleet of mostly civilian ships with guns attached on them, to protect the stations from other pirate groups. He truly showed his talent as commander in 2263, when a powerful pirate gang known as the “Ber-Shi Bandits” attacked the stations. They were repelled after a battle where Grenur’s forces took minimal casualties. Life seemed to be going well on these stations. But unfortunately for Grenur, his past actions as a pirate had catched up on him. In 2264, the Galactic Council started an anti-piracy mission where they attacked the stations. While the stations' inhabitants did its best to fight off these attackers, they stood no chance as the Council had better ships. The stations were destroyed and Grenur had to flee again. This time to a planet, as Grenur thinks that they would be safer there, as it is less likely that the Council find them there.

The Insurgency
The planet that Grenur and his followers choose to settle on was “Debruri”. Debruri was a planet that used to be a pretty big habitable colony before the Nano-Crisis. Nowadays, its mostly desert and ruins, as the Swarm has converted the entire ecosystem into more resources during the Crisis. Grenur’s group has set up a small base there, in order to rebuild and regain their strength. The group kept a low profile there, until 2269, when first contact with the Milky Way Galaxy was made. A scientific exploration vessel that belonged to the polity known as the Stellar Federal Union has arrived in Andromeda using a repaired Hypergate. While there were immediately tensions between the two galaxies, relations were mostly peaceful. Or so it was until the Intergalactic War broke out after an escalated diplomatic incident where the Galactic Council tried to arrest a troublemaker who fled to the Milky Way. Grenur saw this as the perfect opportunity to come out of hiding, regroup and maybe even take some revenge on the Galactic Council. While the Andromedan fleet was busy in the Milky Way, they took over a bunch of their space stations and declared them to be part of the "Andromedan Free Systems." While this plan had some success at first, the Galactic Council quickly saw these "Free Systems" as an insurgency and diverted part of their fleet to quell it. Because of this distraction, the combined militaries of the Milky Way began seeing more success, eventually invading the Andromeda Galaxy itself. After the war was over and a peace was signed, creating a demilitarized zone around the systems close to the Hypergate, the Galactic Council lost control over certain stations as unrest gripped the nation. A lot of these came under the control of Free Systems, leading them to what they are today.

Grenur performs his insurgency by raiding Council freighters to gain supplies, attacking lightly defended space stations, and sometimes outright terrorism. One of the things that made this all for him possible are the weapons that the nations of the Milky Way had given him during the Intergalactic War. Another advantage that the Free Systems have are their planetary settlements. The Galactic Council, out of fear for any remaining nano's, avoided the planets and had settlements exclusively in space. This has led to their military be very inexperienced in planetary invasions as was seen during the Intergalactic War. Bombing the settlements from orbit also isn't very effective for them, as their ships aren't made for attacking planetary targets. Because of all of this, Grenur's insurgency and the Free Systems are still going strong.

Politics and Ideology
Grenur is the inventor of Decentralized Assemblism. Decentralized Assemblism is an ideology that advocates for a mostly decentralized democracy where the Free Systems are governed by a democratically elected assembly on the local and confederal level. Settlements and space-stations are mostly free to govern how they want, only limited by the constitution. In practice, its a little bit difficult to implement this system in newly occupied space stations, mostly because of the fact that democratic institutions had to be build from the ground up. Another problem that his paramilitary might face in the future is factionalism. The Free Systems is made up of everyone who doesn't like the Andromedan Galactic Council. The two other main factions that Grenur has to contend with are the anarchists, who want it to be even more decentralized, and the republicans, who are more in favor of a federal system instead of a confederal one. While these factions are currently united against a common foe, it is to be seen how they fare once the foe is gone.
