Repeal "On Abortion"

The WA Office believes that an important part of accessing abortion is to reduce unnecessary regulations and barriers to providing reproductive health services. Repeal 'On Abortion' notes rightly that section 4 of the target resolution imposes a severe burden on abortion providers by requiring them to be trained to the same level as surgeons when the vast majority of abortions require no surgery and can be done on an out-patient basis. This kind of regulation is entirely unnecessary and serves only, in the status quo, to restrict the number of abortion providers.

While the Office does not agree entirely with some other claims in the repeal, especially on whether doctors who object to performing abortion should be required nevertheless to participate in abortions, the main flaw described by the repeal is valid and important. Repeal would be justified with that flaw in the target resolution alone, even if it were not brought up in the repeal itself. The Office therefore recommends a vote in favour of repeal.
