Inspiration for Sulivannia
The beginnings
In 2014, I began drawing city street maps of various cities by hand onto A3 paper, and used those as cities for my nation. By that time it was composed of the North East and East regions of the current nation. In 2015 I "expanded" the country towards the current form of Sulivannia. I also drew road maps, weekly weather maps, historical boundaries maps and political maps onto paper until late 2016.
Depicting the country
By then I used the Sketches app on my iPad mini to depict statistical maps (politics, climate, transport, geography etc.) and weather maps until mid-2019, due to the slowness of the app. Thereafter, I used Adobe Photoshop on my Windows laptop until around March 2020. Since then I use Inkscape for my maps, since vector files can contain more detail than raster files. However, most of the relevant maps are outdated have not been updated since when I used Sketches and Photoshop all those months and years ago.
Discovering NationStates and 2020
In January 2020, I subscribed to Drew Durnil for his viewing of maps and data, which I find interesting. As a subscriber, I immediately became drawn to the appeal of creating a new nation when I watched his NationStates gameplay video on 21 April, in lockdown. Earlier that year, in February 2020 I used WordPress for my nation's wiki pages and came up with the name Sulivannia. This is actually derived from the name Sullivan which was also used in my hand-drawn maps from after 2014. I no longer use WordPress, but I instead use iiWiki for my wikis. By May 2020, I discovered the NationStates forum and began posting there, mostly on Forum 7 (or F7 for short) ever since I continue posting. In August 2020, on a whim, I created another nation on NationStates, called Alacernia and Tremonia, which I post much less often on the forums and my dispatches than on my main nation. Alacernia (for short) is also a neighbour and close ally of Sulivannia. I don't aim to create another nation unless I make sufficient progress on both of my existing nations, so not for two years, I suppose?
The present and unfinished business
Currently I am working on the national map for Sulivannia (as well as neighbouring Alacernia and Tremonia), made in Inkscape and inspired by Artifexian's Atlas Map series (you should really check it and his channel out). I started them in May 2020, and they are very far from being completed, but I enjoy creating maps on the way.
I am also trying to find a good way to represent my nation's information and whether to use the in-game functions or iiWiki, or both for some reason. The factbook feature in NationStates is adequate, but as an avid reader of Wikipedia pages since 2014, I like the appeal of using iiWiki, mainly for aesthetic reasons. The wikis include general election and political parties details, as well as the source of my national map images and flag vector files. My iiWiki contributions can be found here. At this point and due to my laziness, I will most likely choose NationStates for my factbooks and dispatches.
For now, almost all of the city, state and territory names are placeholders. I will create fictional names for these when I have the time. I am conscious of the geographical similarities of Sulivannia with the United States of America, which I aim to change that in the future by altering the coastlines, rivers, and mountain ranges.
I also realise that most of my free time is spent on projects relating to my NationStates nations in some way, including, but not limited to:
• My NationStates factbooks and iiWiki pages
• My posts on the NationStates Forums (mainly on Forum 7, you'll find me there, often and occasionally)
• My statistical maps (politics, climate, transport, geography etc.) by hand or in Inkscape
• My Minecraft builds (the cities' stadiums)
• My Cities: Skylines builds (the cities themselves)
