By [nation]Vultesia[/nation], Editor
Military roleplay can be a difficult beast to tackle, especially for newer or younger players. We all want fifth-generation fighter jets, die hard battalions of commandos and a fleet of super carriers to project them across Anteria, and without the clear statlines that govern power levels in other games, it can be all to easy to give into that temptation, With that in mind, here’s a handful of Vultesia’s golden rules for military roleplay.

Find an equivalent nation. A quick google search of real nations, filtered by population and GDP, and a Wikipedia link or two later, will show you all manner of information on that nation’s armed forces. You don’t need to make a carbon copy, your nation will invariably have cultural and tactical differences, but this is a very useful guide.
Mind your deployments. Yes, I’m sure that terrorist bombing on another continent had your people crying for an invasion, but before you declare that an armoured division will be arriving within the week, remember, tanks weigh about 70 tonnes, and even a squadron of twenty rely on dozens of support vehicles and hundreds of thousands of litres of fuel and lubricant. The same goes for your soldiers, how will your troops be fed and supplied? Have they had time for cultural training? Environmental acclimatisation? And who will be left to defend your nation? Committing more than 5% of your army is a huge commitment.

Know your narrative. If you’re going to be roleplaying a war, please decide the outcome and an outline of consent before filling up the RMB, this ensures everyone has clear expectations and all players, observers included, can enjoy your story.

Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for advice. I’m no expert on conlangs, the oil trade or any number of other issues, so I lean on the subject matter experts we have on the Anteria discord when it comes to writing these matters. For those players unsure of military matters, feel free to ask and learn.

[box][anchor=2][/anchor][background-block=#fff9cc]Interview with free Azell, Delegate of Conch Kingdom
By [nation]Polder Eiland[/nation], Editor
Polder Eiland: Could you tell the readers a little bit about yourself and your history on NS?

Free Azell: I first started in NS 2007 with my Ellenburg nation. My stint in NS was very short only about a year and a half or so. During that time I was Delegate of Autropolis for a while when Autropolis was a thriving region of over 100 nations. My first stint in NS was a very different one than that of my current. I will get into that more later. In 2018 for some reason, I stumbled upon NS again and returned. When I did I revived my Ellenburg nation and returned to Autropolis where I served as Delegate again. In addition, I created two other nations upon my return Free Azell and Fres. While working in Autropolis I started my own region which now I see was something I was not ready to do. Grew it to about 15 nations and ultimately it died about 3 months after. At that time I moved Free Azell to Conch Kingdom after hearing about the AA and that Audris was looking for a replacement as Delegate. Ultimately I didn't get selected but I did become active in the region serving on the Assembly of Nations and eventually leading it. That lead to becoming a Senator and ultimately an attempt filling big shoes as PM. Replacing KM as PM was daunting. I admit now I was not ready to PM then. I learned things quickly with help of allot of the Conch Kingdom Elders. Served one term as PM and had a falling out with some Conch Kingdom Residents and choose to leave for Dawn to help with reviving. Let's just say that didn't go well. I returned to Conch Kingdom to take over as Minister of FA when a vacancy came up. I then served a few terms there. In the meantime, I started the URA which took off much faster than expected and as most of you know Anteria was a founding region of the Alliance! In Conch Kingdom after my MOFA Stint, I eventually become Delegate and still serve that position today.

P: What has been the favourite role you've filled?

F: I have held a lot of roles in NS. Picking one is going to be difficult! I would have to say World Assembly Delegate. I enjoy the role with both of my stints as so in Autropolis and my current one in Conch Kingdom. Founder of URA would be a close second.

P: Some people may be unaware of your time as a raider--mind speaking a little about that?

F: Well yes its something I don't speak of often. Back in my first stint in NS after I served as Delegate for Autropolis for a while. I created a group called "The Saviors" which was a Raiding army that wreaked havoc on founder less regions for a while. Raiding was much different back then its a "darkside" of my NS career which I have not thought of in a while. Most of that time is lost to NS history due to it happening before NS tracked stats and the fact I don't remember a lot of the specifics from that time period. P: What, more recently, brought you to Conch Kingdom? F: Most recently my return to Conch Kingdom was due to being asked by many different Conchers to return and the fact I made amends with the ones that I had outs with during the "CK Exit" stunt.

P: What's been the most difficult part of your job as Delegate?

F: Being Delegate isn't a cakewalk like a lot of people think. If you take the job seriously as I do there is a lot of things to do. Reading resolutions and trying to decide if they are good to endorse would be the most difficult thing especially in the Security Council. My long absence in NS has made it so I don't always know the history of some nations that others do. There have been more than one occasions where I have endorsed a resolution to later get called out for endorsing it. Which I have now realized if I don't know the full history of the Commend or Condemn it's better just to do nothing in the endorsement stage. I have recently taken a very conservative approach to endorse SC Resolutions that are trying to get to Quorum.

P: What's one of your biggest regrets on NS?

F: My biggest regret would be leaving NS in 08. I missed so much in my 10-year absence. I often wonder what would have been if I had stayed way back then? Would I have been a Raider master? Would I have found myself in the AA? Founding the URA? Maybe missing 10 years was a blessing in disguise.

P: What are your hopes and plans for the future on NationStates?

F: 2021 is here and things for me are looking to change. I would like to announce that I will be retiring from Delegate of Conch Kingdom come March 1st 2021. I am not sure at this time who will take my place I will leave that to the residents of Conch Kingdom to choose that. My future beyond that I plan to continue to work to grow the URA. My first half of 2021 will be spent most likely working with JTF Active and getting some rust off from my R/D skills. Beyond that, I would like to work in a GCR which is something I have yet to check off my NS bucket list.

P: Thank you for your time!

[box][anchor=5][/anchor][background-block=#fff9cc]Opinion: Artists and Anteria
By [nation]Kentalis[/nation], Editor
Art, as to be expected of any major online community, has long played a prominent part in Anteria, a large number of artists find themselves in the community. Anterian artists range from people who do simple photoshops to edit certain things into an image for their nation, to people who make flags and coat of arms and even people who compose music for their nation. Fairly often, these artists will make art for those who ask, completely free of charge. It is always fun to see people show off their art, and I personally think it gives the group a certain positive feel. A lot of the Anterian artists make their art as a hobby. Sadly enough, sometimes artists stop making art, because of people being extremely rude when they ask for art. Something like this happened last week, which was the main reason why I made this article. A well-known artist in the Anterian community announced that he would stop making maps, because of certain people being extremely needy in his Personal Messages. Which brings me to my next point. Please, be calm and nice to the people you commission for your art, that way, both parties enjoy the progress. Here are some golden rules for commissioning artists. 1, Be honest with them. Often, people have certain things they want in the artwork, but they don't want to say it. My tip is, just say that you want those things, artists often don't care about those small details and will just add them without a to big of a discussion. 2, Artists are people too, they probably have a real-life they need to care for, and they won't make your art faster if you spam their inbox. My tip? Just send a single message to remind them once in a while, instead of a few dozen at once. And finally, just be nice. It's as easy as that.

Shrimp Scampi
Ingredients
1 pound linguini
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
1 large shallot, finely diced
5 cloves garlic, sliced
Pinch red pepper flakes, optional
20 large shrimp, about 1 pound, peeled and deveined, tail on
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine
1 lemon, juiced
1/4 cup finely chopped parsley leaves

Instructions
For the pasta, put a large pot of water on the stove to boil. When it has come to the boil, add a couple of tablespoons of salt and the linguini. Stir to make sure the pasta separates; cover. When the water returns to a boil, cook for about 6 to 8 minutes or until the pasta is not quite done. Drain the pasta reserving 1 cup of water.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons butter in 2 tablespoons olive oil over medium-high heat. Saute the shallots, garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using) until the shallots are translucent, about 3 to 4 minutes. Season the shrimp with salt and pepper; add them to the pan and cook until they have turned pink about 2 to 3 minutes. Remove the shrimp from the pan; set aside and keep warm. Add wine and lemon juice and bring to a boil. Add 2 tablespoons butter and 2 tablespoons oil. When the butter has melted, return the shrimp to the pan along with the parsley and cooked pasta and reserved pasta water. Stir well and season with salt and pepper. Drizzle over a bit more olive oil and serve immediately.
