Lave Navy

The Naval Forces of Lave are directly descended from those of GalCop, which controlled the Navy of Lave from 2696 up until 3174, when GalCop was abolished. Lave's navy is split into two parts, the Lavian Marine Corps, which are elite soldiers chosen from the ranks of the Lave Defence Forces (Lave's ground forces) and trained for boarding actions and station combat. The Fleet is comprised mostly of support personnel, as only one pilot is generally needed per ship, and there aren't enough ships to warrant very many pilots. Each Pilot is required to be registered under law by the Pilots' Federation in order for them to be certified to operate a ship. Lave Fleet is comprised of the best of the best pilots of Lave, and many pilots originating from Lave see it as their duty to pilot for the Lave Fleet. Due to the lack of capital ships in Lave Fleet, the number of personnel in the fleet since GalCop's disintegration have fallen rapidly as without GalCop, the expenses to operate capital ships was simply too high, leading to layoffs of hundreds of thousands of personnel. Lave Marine Corps has also suffered thanks to the fall of GalCop, with the once millions strong GalCop Marine Corps having become nothing more than a 300,000 man strong orbital and ship-side defensive force.

Lave Fleet continues to suffer from lack of maintenance and further diversion of resources towards the Lave Defence Forces that operate on the planetary surface, while the Lave Marine Corps has been denied access to further manpower reinforcement even if its marines possess some of the most powerful weaponry and armour available to Lave. Nevertheless, both are a formidable force, and with around 50,000 ships under its control, Lave Fleet continues to be able to project itself onto neighbouring powers, ensuring Lave's continued dominance over the Old Worlds and their states. Even multi-system states have fleets that pale in comparison to the single-system Lave fleet due to Lave's inheritance of the most powerful force of old GalCop and the strength of Lave's industrial economy. As such, Lave continues to enjoy protection against external threats but also enjoys the ability to deploy into other systems and dominate their space with the large and mobile fleet that Lave has.

Lave's naval headquarters is located aboard the station of Lave Station that orbits the planet, allowing for the navy to be coordinated without interference from planetary phenomena and also ensures that Lave Station and its surrounding anchorage facilities are central to the Lave Navy's operations. Within the Lave system, there are anchorage facilities located around Lave Station and other facilties in orbit of Lave and its moon, although there are also facilities within the asteroid belt and it is rumoured that there may be a facility around the planet of Lave 2, which is not open for civilian activity and which is heavily guarded by Internal Security Forces not belonging to Lave Navy but rather the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

History

The history of Lave Navy begins out of a pragmatic need for a defensive force of craft following the immediate establishment of Lave as an independent system in 2483. The fleets of the Old World Coalition were extremely decentralized, with each system having to provide its own fleet forces to defend themselves and the wider Coalition. These early fleets were comprised of mostly single system craft operating with extremely primitive chemical engines, although some were more advanced craft more on par with Federal and Imperial ships, and were using hydrogen fuels for their propulsion and FTL needs. These early fleets were mostly for the defence of singular worlds, although the fleets could be used to travel across system over the course of months to years depending on the type of ship and propulsion used. The FTL systems of the military ships used during this time were still highly volatile and extremely expensive variations of the original Li Qin Jao drive, and so only a very small number of ships could even fit the drives, let alone the fuel stores and other personnel needed to use them, ensuring their use only on the largest and most technologically powerful ships in the navy.

During the war with the Empire from 2498 to 2530, the Coalition navies received their first real tests against an actual foreign opponent with a well-made navy. During the war, the Imperial Navy was subjected to hit and run tactics from smaller and less advanced Coalition ships, that disguised themselves as civilian trade fleets before firing barrages of missiles on the Imperial ships and running with full burn. The Imperial ships would often follow, but would then be lured into a trap as the small craft led them towards the slower and more powerful defence vessels that would proceed to level the Imperial fleets. These tactics earned the Coalition of Old Worlds their first military victory, and ensured that the Empire would not return following the ceasefire in 2530 and subsequent peace treaty.

During the September Revolution on Riedquat in 2690, the Coalition Navy intercepted revolutionary ships attempting to leave the planet and obtain control over the surrounding space, preventing the Riedquat revolution from spreading to other systems. With the GalCop charter being signed in 2696, GalCop was born from the Old Worlds Coalition, and would become a preeminent commercial superpower in the region. In 2700, the Python was released by Whatt and Pritney Ship Constructions, opening up the use of commercial starships for civilian consumers. This new technology heralded a shrinking in size for military ships, as they became smaller to allow for better use of the modular upgrade technology introduced by the Python. The most well known of these craft is the Viper fighter, a legacy ship produced originally by Faulcon Manspace in Reorte in 2762. This fighter would bring about the new age in military and security craft design, and would turn Faulcon Manspace, later Faulcon DeLacy after it acquired DeLacy shipworks in 2982, into the supplier of ships for GalCop's Navy and Internal Security forces (in which Viper is still the solely used craft).

By 2800, new hyperspace methods had been opened to the public, such as the use of the Faraway system, which required extensive monitoring satellites and infrastructure to ensure that no jumps failed, as jumping without the use of this system was considered extremely dangerous. This system was pioneered in Federal and Imperial space, but did end up spreading to GalCop worlds too. However, GalCop had been working on a new and highly advanced mode of hyperspace travel using [REDACTED] technology. The new Quirium hyperspace system, unveiled in 2850 was revolutionary, and an extremely closely guarded secret of the inner sanctum of GalCop leadership, with some constituent worlds not even knowing how to produce it, meaning that Lave secured the secret of Quirium for its own monopolization. Lave's monopoly came to be resented by many worlds of GalCop, but the fairness of GalCop trading ensured that it was only traded within GalCop, while Federal and Imperial FTL continued to rely on Faraway and later the oddly named 2b-type of hyperdrive. Quirium may only have allowed for jumps up to 7ly, but those jumps were quick and could be repeated in succession, while Faraway required significant calculations, and 2b hyperdrives required extensive time to travel across large distances.

However, the highpoint of GalCop Navy was not to last, as in 3125 [DATA REDACTED - PLEASE CONTACT SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR FOR CLEARANCE]. This ended up obliterating GalCop's navy, and rebuilding was extremely difficult. GalCop was forced to rely upon simpler ships for their navy during this time, and ultimately this ended up causing significant strain on civilian traders, as GalCop commandeered their vessels. By 3174, only 11 worlds were left within GalCop, and on the 19th of August, the charter was dissolved and GalCop fell apart, returning the naval forces supplied to their systems of origin. Lave inherited the largest force of all of these ships, and split them between its Internal Security Forces and the Lave Fleet. After the fall of GalCop, the Thomas Gruber regime focused on restoring Lave's economic security rather than strengthening the power of the Lave Navy, leaving the Lave Fleet and Marine Corps in poor shape even if they were still functional.

Organization and Tactics.

Lave Fleet is a typically defensive force, owing to its lack of capital ships and general usage of short range strike craft that can only be utilised in-system, such as the Sidewinder Mk. 1. Lave Fleet therefore likes to operate its forces in ad-hoc and circumstantial groupings, with the smallest of which being a 'wing'. Every wing is usually between 3 to 4 ships, and is typically led by the most high ranking pilot in the wing according to Lave Fleet ranks, and not Pilots' Federation pilot rankings. Lave Fleet typically operates wings as part of larger groups called 'squadrons', with a squadron being the highest level of organization, led by high ranking Squadron Commanders, answerable only to the various admirals of the Lave Admiralty. The Lave Admiralty are responsible for the organization of these Squadrons into battlegroups during times of war, and typically command an Anaconda which has been outfitted for battlegroup command, and as such is primarily behind battle 'lines' (there are no lines in space, but the command vessels typically park themselves in a well defended location away from the enemy vessels). These fleets answer only to the Fleet Admiral, who commands the entire fleet. Most of these organizational structures are subject to redrawing, with the notable exception of Home Fleet, which is commanded directly from Lave Station, and controls around 10,000 of the 26,000 Sidewinder craft, forming a large core of ships.

In-system battle tactics typically revolve around using faster harrassing craft such as the Viper to hit and run the enemy positions, using their superior acceleration to strike their foes with a barrage of lasers and rockets from all directions. Cobra Mk. 3 ships are typically used as reserve fighter craft and small support craft which can resupply the fleet with their large cargo bay or provide additional firepower if need be, as the Cobra is an excellent combat ship if equipped properly with military-grade pulse lasers and missile-racks. The Anaconda is used in battles where heavy firepower is needed, and using their turreted weaponry, the Anaconda is typically able to provide fire against multiple or single ships that are attacking the Anaconda from any direction. The Anaconda typically pales in comparison to the large capital ships used by the Federation and Empire on its own, but a wing of Anacondas can typically provide heavy damage to capital class ships using their superior maneuverability and a multiple front attack. Following a Viper strike, Anacondas will typically arrive to deal damage to the distracted enemy fleet, bringing their heavy weaponry to bear against their opponents and providing a means by which the larger vessels can be destroyed following the Viper attack. The Krait Lightspeeder is an old (first estimated to have been produced in the early 3100s, but due to production records having been lost with the fall of GalCop, it is unlikely a real production date will be found) but reliable fighter that can provide additional layers of support during station-engagements or limited in-system patrols. This downside means that the Krait has seen heavy losses since the mid 3100s, and that the vessel is slowly going obsolete to faster and more nimble craft. Nevertheless, Lave Navy would not have the extra fire-support without these older craft.

In the case of planetary operations, the forces of the Lave Fleet are capable of engaging in heavy orbital bombardment using nuclear missiles, as all ships have missile tubes capable of housing nuclear missiles, which ensures that planetary offensives can be backed with nuclear weapons, even if only a single vessel survives the orbital engagement. Planetary attacks are usually highly precise strikes on high importance facilities using Cobra Mk. 3s modified as planetary dropships for in-atmospheric operations, backed by Vipers for defence. However, the diminished state of the Lave Naval Marine Corps is prohibitive for these types of strikes, and Lave, along with other worlds in the surrounding region, know to use large planetary armed forces to prevent planetary landings from being possible. Lave Navy would typically prefer to leave planets alone, and merely embargo them until they give up without vital trade supplies, although strategic usage of nuclear missiles to cripple infrastructure if the nation has a self-sufficient economy is also known to occur in Lave Fleet tactics.

- 1 Chaff suite

The Anaconda is Faulcon DeLacy's pride, the largest ship currently under production in their shipyards across Human space. The Anaconda was originally produced by RimLiner Galactic in 2856, and fell into Faulcon DeLacy's control after a long series of mergers resulting in the Anaconda becoming one of the longest lasting and most enduring designs in the galaxy. The Anaconda is still capable of fighting against far newer ships, and with frightening ability too, ensuring that DeLacy's behemoth continues to intimidate smaller craft on the battlefield, the turreted weapons capable of targeting and attacking smaller craft with impunity on their own, and capable of bringing even the largest ships down when concentrated on a single target. The Anaconda can easily threaten some of the most powerful ships in space when deployed in numbers, even Federal Battlecruisers refuse to engage large numbers of Anacondas due to their ability to become the most maneuverable light cruiser type ship in the galaxy. The Anaconda is rightfully feared by those who fight it, although it is not invincible, and against large numbers of ships, or a well piloted one, the Anaconda will be no more than easy pickings.

Python

Python docked aboard the central drum of Lave Station.

Ship type: Patrol Boat (Lave Fleet designation) | Multipurpose (Pilots' Federation designation)
Dimensions: 87.9m x 58.1m x 18.0m

Acceleration: Up to 50m/s^2
Atmospheric top speed: 100m/s - Rated to enter and leave atmosphere but not for atmospheric combat.
Shielding: 294MJ stored
Weaponry:
- 3 Large Pulse Laser cannons
- 2 Medium Pulse Laser cannons
- 2 Missile tubes (10x missiles per tube)
- 2 Kinetic point defence guns
Utilities:
- 1 ECM suite

While the Anaconda remains DeLacy's largest and most intimidating ship, the Python is perhaps the best known and most venerable. Still in production after 500 years, the Python's enduring successes when other ships have failed and been replaced can be chalked up to the Python's multipurpose usage and general ability to deal heavy amounts of damage owning to its large frame and hardpoint placement. The Python is able to mount large weapons while remaining far more maneuverable than the Anaconda, and is capable of higher acceleration speeds than it. The Python is still slow, however, and is most likely to be found patrolling tradeways and around installations, where firepower won't be far away from those who need it for long. The Python is capable of taking on ships such as the Fer De Lance, a Zorgon Peterson design, and one that is widely known as a powerful combat vessel and fearsome opponent. Thanks to the Python's combat abilities, the Lave Fleet often places high priority on keeping Pythons alive in combat, as they can bring extreme amounts of firepower to bear in a much faster time than the Anaconda.

Viper Mk. 3

Viper accelerating during a propaganda photoshoot.

Ship type: Medium Fighter (Lave Fleet designation) | Fighter (Pilots' Federation designation)
Dimensions: 29.8m x 24.0m x 8.6m
Mass: 50t
Powerplant output: 20MW
Acceleration: Up to 200m/s^2
Atmospheric top speed: 1000m/s safe combat speed.
Shielding: 137 MJ
Weaponry:
- 4 Small Laser cannons
- 2 Missile tubes (20x missiles per tube)
Utilities:
- 1 ECM suite

The Viper Mk. 3 is the newest rendition of a classic Faulcon DeLacy design brought into service in 2762 by Faulcon DeLacy's predecessor, Faulcon Manspace of Reorte. Faulcon Manspace's revolutionary fighter design was swiftly coopted by the vast majority of system defence forces, and even navies were known to use this ship as an answer to the Federation's fighters produced by Core Dynamics. The result was the most popular combat ship design ever employed across Human space, and Faulcon Manspace becoming one of the largest ship manufacturers in the galaxy, alongside titans such as Core Dynamics, which had enjoyed the top spot in starship design for the centuries the Federation has existed. Even Federal worlds are known to have adopted the Viper for their internal security forces, and the Empire too has begrudgingly accepted the overwhelming popularity of the Viper design, despite the fact that the Empire shun any ship not produced by the premier Imperial shipbuilding corporation, Gutamaya or its preceding companies. The current version of the Viper, the Mk. 3, is produced on license from Faulcon DeLacy at the Cowell and MgRath shipyards for the Lave Navy. Thanks to the incredible acceleration of the ship, Lave's Ministry of Internal Security is known to use these exclusively for chasing down criminals in-system.

Cobra Mk. 3 (Fleet)

Cobra photographed during a propaganda photoshoot.

Ship type: Medium Fighter (Lave Fleet designation) | Multirole (Pilots' Federation designation)
Dimensions: 27.1m x 44.0m x 7.9m
Mass: 180t
Powerplant output: 15MW
Acceleration: Up to 100m/s^2
Atmospheric top speed: 500m/s
Shielding: 92 MJ stored
Weaponry:
- 4 Small Laser cannons
- 4 Missile tubes (10x missiles per tube)
Utilities:
- 1 ECM suite

The Cobra Mk. 3 is perhaps the most popular ship in the Old Worlds region of space, and for good reason, the Cobra Mk. 3 is a versatile and still nimble ship, despite being heavier and weaker than the Viper Mk. 3. The Cobra is still able to deal immense amounts of damage to opponents, and the ship has proven capable as an excellent support fighter and even logistics craft, given the capacity for a large cargo storage of ammunition and other resupply materials. The Cobra is perhaps most impressive because it is a home-grown Lave design, first produced by the Cowell and MgRath shipyards in 3100, and still produced in Lave today, with only Faulcon DeLacy having the rights to produce and sell the ship outside of Lave, as exports from Lave are blocked by the Federation and the Empire. The popularity of the Cobra means that even the Lave Navy has adopted it for the Lave Fleet and the Lave Marine Corps. Given that the Cobra has put Lave on the map for ship production, Cowell and MgRath Shipyards are one of the most important locations to defend when Lave is under attack, as without the shipyards, Cobra Mk. 3 production and production of licensed ships such as the Viper Mk. 3 would be crippled and brought to an end. The Lave Fleet version is the one currently displayed on your monitor.

Cobra Mk. 3 (Marine Corps)

Ship type: Dropship (Lave Fleet designation) | Multirole (Pilots' Federation designation)
Dimensions: 27.1m x 44.0m x 7.9m
Mass: 180t
Powerplant output: 15MW
Acceleration: Up to 100m/s^2
Atmospheric top speed: 500m/s
Shielding: 92 MJ stored
Weaponry:
- 2 20mm Multi-Cannons
Utilities:
- 1 ECM suite
Capacity:
- 1 Support Reconnaissance Vehicle [Vodel Scarab]
- 10 Marines

The Cobra Mk. 3 is perhaps the most popular ship in the Old Worlds region of space, and for good reason, the Cobra Mk. 3 is a versatile and still nimble ship, despite being heavier and weaker than the Viper Mk. 3. Sidewinder Mk. 1

Sidewinder docked inside of one of the fleet drydocks orbiting Planet Lave.

Ship type: System Defence Fighter (Lave Fleet designation) | Light Support (Pilots' Federation designation)
Dimensions: 14.9m x 21.3m x 5.4m
Mass: 25 t
Powerplant output: 5MW
Acceleration: Up to 50m/s^2
Atmospheric top speed: 400m/s
Shielding: 52 MJ stored
Weaponry:
- 2 Small Laser cannons
Utilities:
- 1 ECM suite

First produced in 2982 as a support fighter without any real hyperdrive ability, the Sidewinder Mk. 1 still continues in this role to the present day in Lave Fleet as well as countless other independent systems across space. The Sidewinder is nothing impressive, it is a poorly armoured box in space with thrusters, but it is manoeuvrable and capable of acting as a gun platform for any short ranged defensive fleet or even as an escort for other ships in system. The Sidewinder particularly slow for a small ship, as the thrusters installed are incredibly anemic and are of generally poor quality, owing to the ship's status as nothing more than a cheap last line of defence for many systems. However, the Sidewinder is not required to be fast, merely able to out-turn an opposing ship and fire back on it, hopefully with the support of 10 more Sidewinders for maximum effect. Many a fleet has attacked a system and underestimated the Sidewinder only for the Sidewinders to swarm said fleet and reduce it to space debris. One powerful laser cannon is nothing compared to 100 weak guns being fired from 50 Sidewinders.

Krait

Digital recreation of a Krait fighter.

Ship type: System Defence Fighter (Lave Fleet designation) | Fighter (Pilots' Federation designation)
Dimensions: 24.4m x 27.5m x 6.0m
Mass: 75 t
Powerplant output: 10MW
Acceleration: Up to 40m/s^2
Atmospheric top speed: 400m/s
Shielding: 52 MJ
Weaponry:
- 1 Medium Laser cannon
- 4 Missile tubes (10x missiles per tube)
Utilities:
- 1 ECM suite

The Krait is an obsolete and difficult to upgrade ship, and despite having first been built during the 3100s by Faulcon DeLacy, the Krait has somehow managed to fall behind even the Sidewinder in terms of usefulness to a modern navy. The Krait may possess heavy weaponry and it may match a Cobra in manoeuvrability, but it is nowhere near able to fight the current generation of small ships, which can still out-turn and outperform the Krait in every way. In a one on one, the Krait could take out a Sidewinder, but it would never take out a modern Viper, equipped with the most modern of targeting, control, and combat systems that give the Viper pilot an edge over the Krait pilot. Nevertheless, the Krait can still equip a hyperdrive and be deployed to other systems, but most navies, Lave Navy included, would rather use the Krait as a system defence craft, as it would be easily destroyed in an engagement with modern fightercraft. The Krait is still liked by some, and although rare outside of naval reserves, it can be found in private collections or sometimes even extremely poor pirate fleets with nothing better to use.

Weapons and Technology

Quirium Hyperdrive

Holographic display of a Quirium hyperdrive.

Hyperdrive type: 2A
Supercruise speeds: Up to 2000c
Hyperdrive speeds: Up to 1 ly/s

The Quirium hyperdrive is a revolutionary piece of technology that allows near instantaneous jumps between two locations at a maximum of 7 light years apart. This hyperdrive is incredibly important for maintaining technological strength over our opponents and allows Lave to massively outperform slower hyperdrive systems used by other states. A Quirium drive will allow the user to arrive at their destination days before their opponent will, allowing for large scale ambushes and outmanoeuvres of enemy movements. The drive works by moving space-time around the user, similar to an Alcubierre Drive, but using Quirium - a type of refined hydrogen isotope produced using [REDACTED]. This isotope is able to be converted into a form of exotic matter far more efficiently than normal hydrogen (deuterium), allowing for the drive to function far better than any other drive currently available, namely the type 2B hyperdrive, which functions using common hydrogen (deuterium) isotopes. There are also hyperdrives undergoing testing to use Tritium fuels, but said hyperdrives are not yet near completion and would be too large and unstable to mount on any ship smaller than a Federal Cruiser or Imperial Battlecraft. Until such drives are implemented, the Quirium drive will continue to be the pinnacle of human hyperspace technology.

Laser Weaponry

Type 3 Heavy Laser mounted on a hardpoint.

Power consumption:
- Point Defence - Type 0: 500 Kilowatts
- Small Laser - Type 1: 1 Megawatt
- Medium Laser - Type 2: 2.5 Megawatts
- Heavy Laser - Type 3: 5 Megawatts
Range: 100 Kilometres

Lasers are an ancient weapon capable of firing photons toward an enemy target with the intent of disabling or damaging said targets. The oldest laser weapons were first used as point-defences against aerospace drones and primitive chemical missiles. Modern laser weapons are capable of similar tasks to their ancient forefathers, but modern lasers are capable of firing even more powerful blasts towards their opponent. With modern powerplants capable of producing power in the megawatts, it is not impossible to produce enough power to power high powered laser weapons. These weapons are capable of heavily damaging their opponents and causing hull burn damage from their high energy outputs. A human being would likely be incinerated if hit with one of these weapons. Laser cannons are the most used weapons of the 33rd century, and will continue to remain so, as they remain extremely reliable and potent against any opponent that may dare to threaten them.

20mm Multi-Cannon

20mm Multi-Cannon mounted on a hardpoint.

Shell: 20x128mm AP
Shell weight: 200g
Muzzle velocity: 2000m/s
Rate of Fire: 1,000RPM
Range:
- Effective: 4,000m
- Maximum: Unlimited (in space) | 10,000m (in atmosphere)
Feeding mechanism: Belt-fed from inside the hull.

Multi-cannons are extremely useful multi-role weapons used to cripple lighter armoured vehicles on the ground and turn Human combatants into nothing more than mincemeat thanks to the devastatingly powerful rounds fired by the gun. While one buller is nowhere near as strong as a single shot from a laser, where the multi-cannon shines is using many shots per second to obliterate the opponent. While lasers are more economical and generally sustained, even a small multi-cannon is capable of utterly eradicating thick armour plating. The main downside to these weapons is the generally short effective range when compared to a laser weapon, given the multi-cannon's nature as a weapon with a limited velocity. Multi-cannons are a simple but enduring design from an age in which man very much was forced to rely upon chemical munitions for his warfare needs. The Multi-Cannon is the newest iteration of man's love for simple chemically propelled weaponry.
