INTRODUCTION

The United Kingdoms of Wardency (Wardish: Forenede Kongeriget Vylksylangen) is an island nation in East Usonea. Wardency has a total population of 39.9 million of which 2.1 million have a foreign background. Wardency is a unitary state composed of 87 counties, 15 regions, 6 of which are autonomous, 3 special administrative cities of Gottenberg, Vykken, Ansall og Vattjoem. The country is recognized as a major regional power. Wardency is home to possibly the strongest social and economic policies in the world and large strides in local technological advancement have almost doubled its economic strength in the last few decades.

The climate is in general mild for its northerly latitude due to significant maritime influence. In spite of the high latitude, Wardency often has warm continental summers, being located south of the Cascade Ocean. The general climate and environment vary significantly from the west and east due to the vast longitudinal difference and much of Wardency has reliably cold and snowy winters.

Wardency is a semi-constitutional monarchy and a partial parliamentary democracy, with Legislative power vested in the 383-member unicameral Storting though the Monarch - King Gustaf V holds some power over the legislature. Wardency maintains a social welfare system that provides universal health care and tertiary education for its citizens. It has a high per capita income and ranks very highly in quality of life, health, education, protection of civil liberties, economic competitiveness, equality, gender equality, prosperity, and human development.

Etymology

The etymology of the name "Wardency" (or Vylksylangen in Wardish) came from Leif Ericson's discovery of the island. After many days of not being able to find a single inhabitant, he called the place "No Man's Land" or "Viel Silk Langun". This claim is still debatable but is widely considered official.

Most etymological dictionaries and handbooks derive "Ward" (or Vylksyl in Wardish) from a word meaning "No One". The element "-dency" (or -langen) is believed to mean "location" or "landmark".

The inhabitants of Wardency are called Wardishs or Wards. The inhabitants on the island of Sakvorsk are called Sakvorskis.

History

Priastand settlements and Donish Colony
In search of a more fertile land far from their Europan home, the Norwegian Vikings start their exploration of the Western Sea. Around 741 AD, Leif Erikson discovered the island after months of sailing with a crew of 40 men. To his surprise, the island had no one, after days of searching, no inhabitants were found, so, Leif dubbed the place "No Man's Land" or "Viel Silk Langun" which later became the country's name. Leif was believed to have stayed there for weeks before returning to Norway to announce his discovery to his King. For the next 200 years, many expeditions were made by Swodish, Donish, and Norwegian Vikings. Many closed bay areas later developed into cities like Priastand and Gottenberg.

The island became a colony around 750 AD, part of the Dano-Norwegian Realm. The island's harsh geographical and weather conditions made it difficult for the Danes to maintain leading to the abandonment of the colony around 1066 AD. After that, the island became completely independent but still divided by the tribes that settled there.

Haltsjørgs and the Viking Age
Somewhere in the late 880s, a collection of strong tribes on the north of the island banded together to create an alliance under the family name - Haltsjørg, with this merging of both economic and military forces, these forces also known as "Vylksyls" made themselves a notorious reputation by raiding coastal villages and towns all around the Usonean continent and even further ashore to places such as Verusa. Their way of life revolved around this marriage of sea and warfare, large fleets of longboats would raid and pillage whilst the larger navies of the other empires battled for supremacy among themselves.

Wardish raiders made a name for themselves amongst Eastern Usonea, earning it for violent measures to conquer and colonized new lands in the Supple Lundian, British, German, Tongan, Samarian Kingdoms at the time.

Vylksyl Kingdom
Raiding, Pillaging and Reaving was an unsustainable life, eventually, those who were victims of such attacks managed to match the ferocity and might of the Wardish warriors on land and on the water, longboat navies that were outmatched by larger and tougher classes of warship, with the power of other empires growing immensely the Viking warriors found themselves in a state of decline. Eventually, the more powerful clans transitioned into a monarchic system where the King serves as the Head of State, hopefully, currying favor with those nations and repairing centuries of strained and damaged relations, instead of focusing on external scavenging for sustainment, the Wardish people started mass production of agricultural technologies and pioneered fishing techniques that are still in use today.

Volkland Union and Elisimism
Peace can only be achieved for so long, only less than 200 years after the unification, the Vylksyl Kingdom fell apart due to a combination of natural disasters, succession crisis, and stagnation societal development. The Haltsjørg was no longer able to hold the nation together and it collapses into smaller feudal kingdoms and principalities in the 1420s, turning the Haltsjørg Realm into a rump state. But tides change quickly in the late 1500s when Volkish merchant landed on the island of Sakvorsk. Their colony thrived and grow, eventually was raised into a Grand Duchy of the Volkish Realm. The final heiress to the Haltsjørg was set up to marry the then Grand Duke of Sakvorsk, forming the alliance and the now-ruling House of Haltsjørg-Hämäläinen in 1601. The first King of the new house was born shortly after, Timo the Conquerer.

The Trinitist Church was declining in popularity and control after the Haltsjørg's collapse, struggling to maintain itself. After the Volkish's arrival on the Isles, people were being converted to a new faith, Elisimism. Peace was agreed between the two faiths but eventually one consumed the other and prevailed.

Wardish Piracy and the Second Empire
Timo I, in 1622, at just 20 years old, was crowned King of the Haltsjørg Kingdom after his father's sudden death. Immediately he declared independence from the Volkish Realm and launched a campaign to reunifiy the Wardish Isles. Then 12 years later in 1634, the Wardish Realm is fully as one after a series of feudal bloodbaths and war. But his vision of a fully Unified Wardency didn't end there, he then lifted the ban on piracy in 1634. From 1635 to 1667, he ravaged the Eastern side of the continent, attempting to reconquer lost Wardish lands and people; through violent means of paying mercenaries, pirates, and merchant to spread across the continent. Most notably was the campaign in the Britannian Isles, though failed in late 1652, left damaging effects on the Brits visible to this day in relations and culture.

Before his death in 1688, Timo decided to establish a political assembly of nobles and rich merchants close to him to reign the country after his death. Which then through hundreds of reforms, created the modern Storting assembly.

Republican period and the War of the Regents
Timo's only son, Harald III, died without an heir in 1709. Despite various efforts to seek an unlisted descendant, all attempts lead to nowhere. The Storting then resort to naming the then Earl of Einarssker, Morten Distad as Regent of the Wardish Empire. Morten proposed and executed many radical changes to Wardency's government and economy. Eventually dissolved the monarchy and suspended the Storting on January 10th, 1721; establishing the First Wardish Republic with himself as the Statsholder. Despite the republican constitution, Morten did not add term limits to his title, effectively turning himself into an absolute monarch. The entire Wardish realm erupted into a civil war that contributed massively to the Empire's downfall and near total collapse.

Many Wardish holdings and kingdoms on the Eastern Usonean mainland fell to neighboring armies and states in this power struggle, especially during the Vysarian Unification Wars and the Shiraishowan attacks. Morten was assassinated in 1747, succeeded by his son, Anders, whom died in 1759 during the Battle of Trondsnes, defending Wardish cities from the Vysarian Naval Force. Nicolai Distad, the final Statsholder of the Wardish Republic, choose to restore the Haltsjørg monarchy in an attempt to stabilize the nation. The Grand Duke of Süd Shydtland-Jernøyer, Patrick av Helberg, a descendant from a cadet branch of the Haltsjørg house was chosen to rule. The Storting, the Throne was restored on July 23rd, 1777, Patrick was crowned King of Wardency, the first of His name.

Modern Times
A progressive social and education system kick-started a technology boom that put Wardency at the forefront of the developing world, it was - and still is - a global leader in medical and computer sciences and is home to the largest data servers and internet exchange hub in the world. With progress comes great tension and the balance of powers is becoming unstable, because of this Wardency has rapidly used their technological advancement to invest in better equipment for its military.

The current king, Gustaf V, imposed an authoritarian rule over the nation after the Storting was disestablished for the second time. The act caused major uproars and demonstrations across the country, signaling another potential disruption and possible ending to the millenium monarchy.

Geography

Wardency has a total area of 472,145.67 sq. km. It is composed of three large islands and four smaller, Wardish Isle (366,270.4 sq. km), the large ones are Sakvorsk (40,236.6 sq. km) and Bloarup-Oeholm (38,763.3 sq. km), the smaller islands totaled 26,875.2 sq. km named Viboel, Tamru, Namvergen and Vestfold. Geologically, Wardency is part of the East Usonean Ridge, a ridge along which the oceanic crust spreads and forms a new oceanic crust. This part of the mid-ocean ridge is located above a mantle plume, causing Wardency to be subaerial (above the surface of the sea). The ridge marks the boundary between the North Usonean Plate, the Wardish Plate. the East Cascade Plate and the Erinevo Plate, and Wardency was created by rifting and accretion through volcanism along the ridge.

Climate and Weather

Wardency has four seasons, with a distinctly oceanic climate. Rain is a common scene in Wardency due to its geographical location. However, the island of Sakvorsk is completely dry due to most of the rain was blocked by 2 mountain ranges that formed the Wardish Isle. The mountainous areas of central Wardish, have snow all year round, which makes them a haven for skiers. These areas have an Alpine climate.

The lowest recorded temperature ever is -35 degrees Celsius, on Mount Jattentopp (elevation: 2,393 m) on January 10, 1956. The highest recorded temperature ever is 38 degrees Celsius, on Tamru on July 12th, 1972.

Precipitation is highest around the months of April to September. Storms are somewhat common, they occur usually in eastern Wardency. Tornadoes are very rare and are usually not destructive.

Flora and Fauna

Due to its isolation, Wardency is a richly biodiverse nation. With its location and history of contact, Wardency contains plants from the Arctic Floristic Kingdom, and with the addition and introduction of numerous northern hemisphere plants. Some of these have evolved into new species. The same also applies to its fauna. It is estimated then 46% of the species located in Wardency are endemic species.

Demographics

The total population of Wardency is estimated to be 39.9 million. The population exceeded 10 million for the first time in approximately August 1951, according to the Statistics and Mapping Agency. The population density is substantially higher in the south than in the north. About 41.8% of the population lives in urban areas.

There are no official statistics on ethnicity, but according to the Statistics and Mapping Agency around 2.1 million inhabitants of Wardishs are of a foreign background in 2020, defined as being born abroad or born in Wardency to two parents born abroad.

Language

The official language of Wardency is Wardish. Minority languages like Volkish and Sakvorski are recognized. However, English is taught in school for children.

In varying degrees, depending largely on frequency of interaction with English, a majority of Wardishs, especially those born after the 1990s, understand and speak English owing to trade links, the popularity of overseas travel, and the tradition of subtitling rather than dubbing foreign television shows and films, and the relative similarity of the two languages which makes learning English easier. In a 2020 survey, 93% of Wardishs reported the ability to speak English.

English became a compulsory subject for secondary school students studying natural sciences as early as 1973 and has been a compulsory subject for all Wardishs students since the late 1980s. Depending on the local school authorities, English is currently a compulsory subject between first grade and ninth grade, with all students continuing in secondary school studying English for at least another year. Most students also study one and sometimes two additional languages. These include (but are not limited to) German, French, and Spanish.

Education

Education in Wardency is mandatory for all children between the ages of 6 and 18. The school year in Wardency runs from mid/late September to early/mid-May, and the Christmas holiday from mid-December to early January divides the school year into two terms. Homeschooling is closely supervised by the government and very limited.

From the age of one, children can be admitted to free pre-schools (foerskola). Pre-schools help provide an environment that stimulates children's development and learning and enable parents to combine parenthood with work or studies. During the year before children start compulsory school, all children are offered a place in a pre-school class (förskoleklass), which combines the pedagogical methods of the pre-school with those of compulsory school. Between ages 6/7 and 18/19, children attend compulsory comprehensive school (grundskola), divided into three stages. At the end of this period, students achieve a Certificate of Compulsory Education (CCE), with a pass requiring at least a 5:1 (equivalent to a 'C' grade) in both English/Wardish and Mathematics.

Tertiary education in Wardency is entirely free and state-funded, and as a result, approximately 70% of the population holds some form of University Degree. This has allowed Wardency to develop a high-tech economy with a focus on advanced manufacturing.

Healthcare

Healthcare in Wardency is one of universal healthcare largely financed by government national health insurance. Approximately 75% of healthcare costs are covered by government agencies for all citizens, while those on lower incomes or suffering from chronic or infectious diseases, such as Cystic Fibrosis, AIDS, or Cancer receive free healthcare. Children under the age of 16 and the elderly over the age of 70 also receive 100% health coverage.

The average life expectancy in Wardency is high, with a life expectancy of 84 years for men and 87 years for women. There are 3.95 physicians for every 1000 inhabitants in Wardency.
