Vesta is the fifth planet in the Selenid System and is the homeworld of humanity, a species known for its ingenuity and eagerness to explore the unknown. Following the end of the Great War the remaining world powers established a World Society to ensure global peace, but as tensions continue to rise and countries begin to venture into outer space there is no telling whether a new conflict might erupt.
Events take place in in the planet Vesta, the homeworld of humanity, the midst of a period where world powers are competing to establish their presence in outer space through research bases, military outposts, and mining operations. See the following detailed summary of major events in the 21st century:
Great War (2017 - 2023)
A skirmish breaks out between Austra and the Union over the use of the Eastern Sea for military exercises.
Austra demands that the Union cease using the Eastern Sea for military exercises.
The Union rejects the ultimatum and deploys its naval forces to the Eastern Strait, leading to an all-out battle against Austra.
Austra receives the support of the International Security and Defence Alliance (ISDA).
The Union receives the support of the International Defence Community (IDC).
Austra defeats the Union at the Battle of Dorado and begins an advance deep into Union territory.
The Union conducts a strategic nuclear strike against the advancing Austran forces.
Austra considers this a first strike and retaliates with its own nuclear strikes against key Union targets.
The Union activates its nuclear response plan and launches against key Austran targets.
Sartoria, Qastari, Mydia, and Septima sign the Egia Protocol to form the Global Peace Council (GPC) and demand an immediate cessation of hostilities in Austra and the Union.
GPC strikes Austran and Unioner nuclear launch sites in preparation for a full invasion, leading to partial government collapses in both countries.
The transitional governments of Austra and the Union sign instruments of surrender pending negotiations for a final peace treaty.
Post-War Cooperation (2024 - 2038)
The member states of the former ISDA and IDC sign the Treaty of Messelia to bring a formal end to the Great War.
The parties also sign the Charter of the World Society, an international forum where all nations can cooperate on a variety of issues and solve their differences in a peaceful manner
The World Society submits to the member states the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty (NWPT).
The NWPT bans the development, possession, and use of nuclear weapons, and tasks the WS Security Council and the International Nuclear Energy Authority (INEA) with its enforcement.
Sartoria and Mydia sign a memorandum of understanding to launch and operate an international space station in Low Vesta Orbit.
Austra dissolves into four successor states (V37 - V40) following severe instability and a violent civil war.
The four Austran successor states are admitted to the World Society.
The Union joins the international space station project as a launch and crew provider.
The primary components of the Home One International Orbital Station are successfully launched.
An international crew comprised of Sartorian, Mydic, and Unioner astronauts is the first to operate the station.
Formation of Alliances (2039 - 2054)
The Union blocks from Sartoria to commit the member states of the International Outer Space Authority (IOSA) to establish a permanent human presence beyond Low Vesta Orbit.
Sartoria boycotts the XIV IOSA Annual Meeting in response to the Union's block.
A skirmish breaks out between Mydia and the Union after Mydia accidentally fires on Union ships, signaling the start of the Egian War.
Union President Paul Lassiter stakes a claim to the Egia Archipelago, deploying military forces to take it by force.
Mydia launches a counteroffensive to reclaim the Egia Archipelago.
The Union is renounces its claim and engages in peace negotiations, bringing the Egian War to an end.
Sartoria and Franconia form the Space Exploration Alliance (SEA) to increase bilateral cooperation on space-related matters.
SEA commits to building and staffing a permanent research base on Apollo before the end of the century.
The Union criticises the founding of SEA as a breach of post-war good faith cooperation.
Mydia and Sartoria form the Valentian Integrated Defence Command (VID) as a defence-oriented initiative in response to the Egian War.
The Union criticises VID as a further breach of post-war cooperation and suspends its participation in joint crew launches to Home One, effectively withdrawing from the project.
Qastari and Franconia join VID while Mydia joins SEA, forming the informal group known as the G4.
The G4 sign the First Treaty of Tedimia to form the Valentian Economic Zone (VEZ).
The VEZ involves lowering tariffs and increasing economic cooperation among the member states.
The Union forms the Commonwealth of Nations as an alternative to both SEA and AeroCom.
The G4 sign the Second Treaty of Tedimia to form the Valentian Travel Area (VTA).
The VCA involves lifting tourist visa requirements and expediting the process to obtain work and study visas among the member states.
Second Space Age (2055 - Present)
SEA launches Lyre 1, the first of five missions meant to prove the alliance's capability to travel beyond Low Vesta Orbit.
Lyre 1 is a success and marks the first time that humans orbit Apollo since before the Great War.
SEA assembles the final components of the Home Two Orbital Station, a station in orbit around Apollo.
SEA sends a crew of three astronauts to manage Home Two.
The G4 sign the Treaty of Parthenion to form the Common Foreign Service Initiative (CFSI).
The CFSI involves establishing joint embassies, consulates, and trade offices in countries where certain members have no resident diplomatic or consular presence.
SEA launches Lyre 5, the last of the Lyre missions.
Lyre 5 confirms SEA's ability to land astronauts on Apollo and certifies the successful functioning of the primary components of Apollo City, the SEA's apollian station.
The Union launches the first of the Eagle Missions, intended to prove the Union's ability to send astronauts to Apollo.
Apollo City officially begins operations with an international crew of six, signaling the start of a continuous human presence on Apollo.
The G4 sign the Treaty of Merritt to place all their common institutions under a single organisation named the Valentian Alliance (VA).
The VA establishes freedom of movement and eliminates most tariffs to implement a free trade area across its member states.
There are three main blocs or major international alliances that divide the world. In addition, countries also form minor alliances on various issues, from military cooperation to trade enhancement.
The World Society (WS) was established in 2024, shortly after the end of the Great War (2017 - 2023) to serve as a forum for the peaceful resolution of controversies between states, the guarantee of international security, and the promotion and coordination of cooperation on a variety of issues, from nuclear energy to space exploration.

* Plots V37-V40 had a significant role in the Great War (2017-2023) and must consider certain predetermined events as part of their history. Contact Justinian Kalominos or Mydic Empire for more information.
There are certain rules that all members must abide by in order to successfully participate in Selene. The basic rule is that content may not be insulting or incite others to respond with insults. We are all here to have a good time and there is no place for personal attacks or hateful content. See the Library of Alexandria for a detailed breakdown of the rules.
Time passes three times as fast in roleplay as it does in the real world, which means that we experience three years in roleplay within a single year in the real world. See the image below for a practical example of the passage of time and click this link for the current roleplay date.
II. Consent and Realism
Countries cannot act upon others or on behalf of others without their consent; that is, countries cannot attack others or claim facts about others without first obtaining permission from them.
Countries must exist and develop in a way that is realistic within the context of the world; that is, they cannot be all-powerful or develop capabilities beyond what could be reasonably expected by other members (e.g. portray themselves as immune to attack or develop a space programme within a single month).
Countries may use real world languages and religions but they must give them different names (e.g. in roleplay English is called Amerigan). Once they have claimed a language or religion, members have primary rights over them and can decide how other countries may use them; for example, the country who first claimed Amerigan can decide if other countries can also claim to speak it.
See the 🌐 Culture Repository for a list of languages and religions currently in use.
IV. International Relations
Countries are presumed to have extensive diplomatic and trade relations with each other, and to have embassies in all other countries; that is, they cannot claim to have just come out of isolation. Countries are subject to all existing international treaties on diplomatic relations and international trade. Members can discuss exemptions from this rule with the Roleplay Councillor if it fits with the concept for their country.
Countries may express, within their GIS entry, a preference to join a specific bloc, but each bloc has the final word on how and when to admit new members, including setting requirements that countries must meet in order to be admitted.
V. Space Travel
Countries that wish to operate a space programme must do so in accordance with the limits set by the Privy Council and described below:
Countries in Tier 1 are those that are not members of either of the two major blocs.
Countries in Tier 1 can launch sounding rockets, build and operate satellites, and launch suborbital rockets.
Countries in Tier 2 are those that are members of either of the two major blocs.
Countries in Tier 2 can operate an astronaut corps in low orbit and launch satellites beyond low orbit.
Countries in Tier 3 are those that are members have been so designated by either of the two major blocs.
Countries in Tier 3 can operate an astronaut corps beyond low orbit, operate space stations, and land on other celestial bodies.
Countries in Tier 2 are allowed to access Tier 3 capabilities with the support of Tier 3 countries; for example, a Tier 2 country can launch astronauts to a space station operated by a Tier 3 member of the same major bloc.
See the Roleplay Regulation Order for further detail on the restrictions applicable to each tier of space travel.
In order to appear on the map of Vesta one must submit an entry to the Global Information Survey (GIS), a form that lists a few basic nation facts for easy reference and lets the applicant select their location on the world map.
Generally those wishing to participate in world events have three primary avenues for involvement, once they have applied to appear on the map:
Post on the Regional Message Board to share updates about from their nations and interact with others, either to increase cooperation or participate in existing or emerging conflicts.
Publish a Dispatch to craft the mythos of their nations and provide detailed information so that others may know more about their histories, governments, cultures, and recent news.
Join the Deep Space Gateway (also known as the Discord Server) to discuss recent news, and plan past and future events with their fellow leaders.
[OOC] Please note that failure to have a nation in Selene or to roleplay on the RMB at least once a month are causes for removal from the map, but you may reapply at your earliest convenience and expect to be accepted. If you were expelled from the region due to rules violations, please contact a government official before reapplying.
