Navis Imperialis (Imperial Navy) Voidship Weapons and Classes

Imperial Navy Weapons

Weapons Batteries

A "Weapons Battery" is a catch-all term for a collection of numerous individual weapons mounted onto a Voidship. Often times, the presence of a weapons battery means that whole sections of a Voidship's hull can be covered by gun ports, launcher systems, turrets, weapon housings, and more.

The types of weapons found on a weapons battery vary immensely: Plasma Projectors, close-range Missile Launchers, Laser Cannons, Rail Guns, Mass Drivers, Fusion Beamers and Graviton Pulsars have all been found on Imperial warships. These batteries are typically designed to fire in coordinated salvoes.

Macroweapons

Macroweapons are a common type of weapon employed by the Imperial Navy. These massive weapons are typically deployed in batteries, and destroy their targets through the delivery of powerful broadsides fired in volleys to overwhelm their targets in a barrage of destruction. A single macroweapon is a giant, edifice-size weapon covered with gantries, cranes, power lines and pipes. Even with the presence of auto loaders, a macroweapon battery requires a crew that stands at a hundred strong.

A standard macrocannon shell typically weighs about a kiloton or more and when fired can impact with a force of several hundred megatons.

Macroweapon Variants

Martian Macrocannon - By far the most common form of macroweapon, these macrocannons are reliable, hard-hitting weapons that fire high yield ordnance, mounted along an Imperial warship's dorsal ridge or in a broadside.

Stygian Macrocannon - A variant of the standard macrocannon designed to fire heavier ordnance than the common Martian Pattern. The shells of a Stygian Macrocannon contain an adamantium core that can cut through even the heaviest forms of enemy Voisdhip armor.

Melta-Macrocannon - These squat, oversized, and highly-insulated macrocannons are designed to fire special shells tipped with powerful melta-charges that detonate with furious heat upon impact with the target (or after burrowing deep into enemy armor)

Disruption Macrocannon - A variant of the standard macrocannon designed to fire a shell of highly charged, ionized deuterium atoms. These particles cause minimal physical damage to their targets. Instead, they are intended to overload and shut down power transfer systems throughout the target vessel.

Plasma Battery - These weapons are different from most other macroweapons in that they do not fire a physical ballistic shell, instead firing superheated plasma. A plasma battery refocuses the power of the plasma "blast," concentrating it into a compressed photonic packet that can be fired over extremely long distances.

Bombardment Cannon - These weapons are designed to reduce planetary defenses to nought and provide support for Imperial landings on target worlds. Some Imperial Navy commanders utilize bombardment cannons in ship-to-ship engagements. Most bombardment cannons utilize linear accelerators to launch massed salvoes of heavy magma-bomb warheads. Often the simple rumor that orbiting Imperial vessels carry this weapon is enough to force a quick surrender.

Gravitic Mass Drivers - These weapons are essentially mass drivers that have been scaled-up to classify as a macroweapon. Instead of utilizing electromagnetic forces like a typical rail gun, a gravitic broadside utilizes gravitons to hurl projectiles at a fraction of the speed of light. Gravititic Broadsides are among the rarest kinds of macroweapons found in service.

Lances

Lances are directed energy weapons of extreme power. A Lance is essentially an upscaled, Voidship-grade version of the laser weapons deployed by the Imperial Legion. However, by drawing upon the power of a Voidship's internal Plasma Reactor, a Lance can fire in prolonged bursts instead of short "shots" of infantry-grade laser weapons. Lances utilize triple or even quadruple-arranged energy projectors to focus their energy into a concentrated beam, capable of burning through even the heaviest of armored hulls or cutting smaller vessels in cleanly in half.

A single Lance cannon can deliver up to a gigaton of force per "shot."

Unlike Macroweapons, there are very little variants of or deviations from the standard Lance design. Of the Lance variants that do exist, their main differences lie in power-scale, range, and firing methods.

Torpedoes

Torpedoes are massive self-propelled ship-to-ship missiles that come in a variety of forms and variants. The most common forms of torpedo are either 60 meters long (on Destroyers and Escorts), 200 meters long (on Cruisers) or 300 meters long (on Battleships).

Guided by a crude and murderous A.I. Machine Spirit and the calculations of a Voidship's crew members, a torpedo uses basic sensors to scan for the heat from plasma drives, a target silhouette, any electronic output, and even an enemy ship's mass to locate enemy vessels. Once the Machine Spirit acquires its target, powerful maneuvering thrusters adjust the torpedo's course to intercept. There are few shielding systems in the Galaxy that can deflect a torpedo, as most of said systems intercept incoming fire based on its speed. With that said, Imperial torpedoes travel slowly enough (relatively speaking) that the majority of shielding systems cannot and will not intercept them.

Torpedo Variants

Plasma Warhead - The most common type of torpedo deployed by the Imperial Navy. The internal Plasma Reactor that powers the drive systems of these torpedos allow them to punch deep into the bowels of a ship before triggering a devastating reactor overload.

Melta Warheads - A torpedo variant designed to detonate a precisely-organized series of Melta charges upon impact with a target, burning through tough hull plating and consuming sections of the target vessel's interior in a devastating conflagration.

Virus Warheads - As the name would imply, these torpedo variants are designed to unleash infectious microbes into the interior structure of an enemy vessel. The deadly contagions unleashed by a Virus Warhead can be anywhere from flesh-eating cancers to nerve-agents to the bubonic plague of old.

Boarding Torpedo - Less of a traditional torpedo and more of a manned voidcraft. Boarding Torpedoes are designed to punch through heavy armor and offload a contingent of Imperial Marines into the internal structure of an enemy Voidship.

Vortex Warheads - By far the most dangerous type of torpedo to be deployed by the Imperial Navy. A Vortex Warhead is not a crude explosive charge, but rather an arcane device that tears a hole into the very fabric of reality, consigning vast chunks of its target to be banished into the Warp. The swirling energy within the newly-formed "Warp Rift" immediately draws all matter in the affected area through it, leaving gaping wounds in the target vessel.

Nova Cannons

Nova Cannons are a classification of exceptionally powerful weaponry that can only be mounted beneath the heavily armored prow of Cruisers-grade vessels or above. These extremely powerful weapons have few equals in terms of their range or destructive power.

While there are several variants, the standard Nova Cannon utilizes an array of potent gravimetric impellers designed to accelerate a projectile to the speed of light.

The projectiles fired from a Nova Cannon vary more than the nature of the cannons themselves, ranging from sophisticated warheads which burn with the potency and ferocity of a star, to implosive devices which exert destructive and inescapable gravitational forces upon all those caught within several thousand kilometres of the detonation.

A bog standard "warhead-less" shell fired from a Nova Canon can still strike with a force equal to or greater than the Chicxulub Impact that once caused a mass extinction event in Terra's prehistory.

Power Rams

Power Rams are a colossal type of power weapon mounted beneath the armored prow of Imperial Voidships. Like all power weapons, a Power Ram is equipped with a special power generator that, when activated, invelops the weapon in a resplendent field of energy that disrupts solid matter upon impact.

The purpose of Power Rams is to increase the "ramming power" possessed by all Imperial Voidships. The force increase applied by a Power Ram is more than enough to breach a heavily armored enemy vessel. It is not unheard of in some instances for an Imperial Voidship to plow straight through an enemy vessel, rending it in two.

Imperial Navy Voidship Classes

A/N: Listed below is simply a collection of the most common classes of Voidships utilized by the Imperial Navy. It by no means includes every class of vessel in service to the Navy nor does it account for the gross level of upgrades, retrofits, and customizations found on many Imperial Voidships. This list is merely to give you an idea of the kind of vessels usually found in deployment.
