Grand Army of the Holy Empire

The Neo-Byzantine military is divided into three services: the Imperial Ground Forces, the Imperial Navy, and the Imperial Aerospace Forces. The Armed Forces as a whole are traditionally referred to as the Army except for the navy on occasion. The armed forces are all under the direct and supreme command of the royal Basilius though about half of these troops under his order are conscripts. Military service lasts 18 months for the army or 24 months for the navy, and is compulsory for all citizens over age 18, although this is up to the member states to enforce. By default, at the end of active duty each military personnel is enrolled in the reserve army; this applies equally to conscripts and volunteers regardless of ranks.
In addition to an extensive reserve force. Neo-Byzantium's military capacity has declined since the end of the Cold War, a fact that Basilius Ivan II sought to address by dramatically increasing defense spending. Still, the Neo-Byzantine Commonwealth still has one of the world’s strongest armed forces establishments, with over 900,000 personnel in the Armed forces and 2,000,000 in reserve. This also includes a vast nuclear arsenal right under the authority of the military, along with the Byzantine Space Agency, which has been seeing increasing funding with the incentive of boosting national prestige.

The Defense Ministry of the Neo-Byzantine Commonwealth serves as the administrative body of the Armed Forces. Each of the six member states of the Holy Empire share the protection of the Basilius and must contribute a particular share of either soldiers or funds to the collective defense of the nation. These military regions are called Themes, and member states appoint their own strategos to serve as a planner of local defense and supply as a military governor in wartime. Since the Medieval Times, the Praetorian Prefect has acted as the main commanding and supervising body of the Byzantine armed forces. In the modern age however, this job falls to the Minister of Defense. Of course the ruling Basilius may at any time override the orders of any of his subordinates, and enjoys complete executive authority over the troops.

Foreign and domestic intelligence operations are managed, respectively, by the Imperial Intelligence Service and the Ofylakas (literally translates to "the guard"). High officials are protected by the Imperial Security Service. The Limitanei, which combat transborder crimes (particularly drug trafficking and smuggling), and several other intelligence agencies were also established shortly after the founding of the increasingly centralized commonwealth. Local police forces have been increasingly disarmed and relegated to traffic and petty crime duties as well-trained state Ofylakas agents have become increasingly common and dispatched to all member states and territories, replacing the army in many military posts.
