The Type 16 aircraft carrier is a planned aircraft carrier class built for the Royal Serpens Land Navy and the Republiek van Rookanse Navy*. The ships of the class will be powered by two Serpens Land Electric Company PHWR5 nuclear reactors capable of propelling each vessel at speeds upwards of 30 knots. The Type 16s will be CATOBAR type carriers each equipped with two 75 m electromagnetic aircraft catapults and hydraulic arresting gear. Currently one vessel: HMSLS St. George has been completed and is going through sea trials. Another vessel: RVRN Admiraal Vollenhoven is currently being built for the Republiek van Rookanse Navy.
The vessels will have a displacement of 42,500 tonnes when completed, but the design anticipates more weight being added during their careers. Each vessel is 262 m long and will have a carrier air wing of up to 40 aircraft.
Currently the Royal Serpens Land Navy is testing the Wilcox-Aeyers SF-100M fighter for use on the Type 16 carrier.
When fully crewed the total ship's company of each vessel will consist of 670 sailors, rising to 1500 when air crew is added. The vessels will have a displacement of 42,500 tonnes, but the design has the option of adding over 5000 tonnes over their service lives.
The Type 16 are each fitted with two Serpens Land Electric Company PHWR5 nuclear reactors. The PHWR5 nuclear reactor is a pressurized heavy-water reactor (abbreviated PWHR). A PWHR is a nuclear reactor that uses heavy water (deuterium oxide D2O) as it's coolant and neutron moderator. Heavy water is less absorbent than regular water, increasing the neutron economy of the reactor. This allows the use of unrefined uranium 238 as the reactor fuel.
The Type 16 has the capability of carrying from 30-40 fixed wing aircraft.
