Markar Ostek Kosorov (Kovka: Маркaр Остеk Косoрoв; born 3 November 1954) is a Kovka politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Kovkastan since 3 May 2008. Previously, he held the position of Transport Minister between 1998 to 2003, and Interior Minister between 2003 to 2008. He has held a seat in the national legislature since its establishment in 1995, and before that -- under Soviet rule -- the Kovka Supreme Soviet.

[/box][/floatleft]He was a supporter and important organiser of the 1998 presidential impeachment of Set Derderian and the subsequent constitutional changes in 1999. However, in this period and its early aftermath, he remained largely out of the public eye, being eclipsed by other political figures such as former Prime Minister Boshanov and former President Musayelyan.

Following his move from Transport Minister to Interior Minister in 2003, he began to rally for a merger between the Republican Party of Kovkastan and the National Republican Federation. By early 2008 he had succeeded in his endeavour, manoeuvring himself from overshadowed outsider to Chairman of the nation's largest political party, winning the election for Prime Minister later that year.

Kosorov's premiership has been marred by criticisms of authoritarianism, with his party accused of suppressing the opposition. Nevertheless, his secular and economic reforms have been praised by supporters, leading to an increased standard of living, better working conditions, and higher productivity.

Kosorov was born on 3 November 1954 in Dashak, Kovka SSR, Soviet Union -- the second eldest of five children. His mother -- Natia Kosorova (née: Dengvani) -- was a factory worker, and his father -- Vazken Kosorov -- was a soldier of the Red Army, serving in the Great Patriotic War. Vazken was seriously wounded while serving and upon his return was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

Kosorov began studying History and Politics at Artazor State University in 1973 and graduated in 1976. As was required by law, he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union during this time, remaining a member up until 1991 when Kovkastan declared independence. He met future President of independent Kovkastan, Emin Musayelyan, while studying at Artazor. The two became close political allies up until the turn of the millennium when relations soured.
