Imperial Republic of Arkania
The Imperial Republic of Arkania, commonly called Arkania, is an elective monarchy in Europe. It is bordered on the north by the Baltic Sea, on the south by Italy, by the east by Wallachia, Greece, Galicia-Volhynia, and Russia and on the west by Altamarchia and Bavaria. Arkania covers 1,054,897 square kilometers and has an estimated population of 158 million, the most populous country in Europe. Arkania comprises of 3 kingdoms, 6 principalities, 15 duchies, 6 republics, 4 free cities, 9 baronies, 2 dominions, 5 archedrenies, 2 chief rectories, 2 patriarchies, and 1 matriarchy.
Arkania was founded in 1293 under the name of Bardochia, a region in the Balkans. The country took part in various wars, such as the 40 years war against the HRE, the Napoleonic Wars, and both world wars. It is a superpower, rivaling with the United States, although it has friendly relations with America. The basis of the country's culture is magic, as a good portion of Arkanians have a genetic component that unlocks the powers of sorcery.
Arkania comes from the word arcane. Arkania means "land of the arcane", a reference to the arcane arts (magic) practiced by the inhabitants of the regions of Espadia and Joveterra, respectively the homelands of the Lustrovelian and Barilian tribes.
The standard way to refer to a citizen of Arkania is as an "Arkanian."
The original area of Arkania, the Balkans, was inhabited throughout prehistory. Later, the region was settled by Illyrians and Lustrovelians. Greek colonies were also established on the coast of Dalmatia. Circa 300 BC a tribal leader named Veltur organized a kingdom to stop raids from the Illyrian tribes and contain Macedonian advancement to the area. In 293 several Greek colonies were attacked and sacked by Veltur, and by 291 BC most Illyrian tribes were subjugated by Veltur. The tribal king then attacked Macedonia, conquering the country in a war that lasted a decade. The tribal advancement stopped at a coalition organized by several greek city-states. In 265 BC Veltur died, and his son Arbello decided to expand towards the west. His campaign, however, was unsuccessful.
There is little to no written history of the period from 230 to 110 BC. By 50 BC, the tribal kingdom of Velturia was divided into several tribes warring for control of the throne. The struggle ended in 10 BC when the Romans conquered the Balkans. Roman emperor Diocletian, who ruled from 284 to 305 AD, was native to Arkania. The nation regained its independence in 390 AD, with the revolt led by Nirdeo, a local noble. With the Roman Empire engulfed in chaos, independence was promptly recognized by the Roman Emperor. The Kingdom of Lustrovelia lasted for a century, before the Ostrogoth conquest in 502 AD.
Ostrogoth rule ended in 553 with the invasion of the Eastern Roman Empire. Soon, the Avar Khaganate and Slavic tribes invaded the region. The slavs established several kingdoms and ruled until 1081. That year, a revolt in Perceveranzia by disgruntled peasants turned massive, and even reached the Byzantine Empire - the Byzantines controlled a small part of Dalmatia. The same year the revolt ended, Croatia was no longer Croatia, but Lustrovelia. The Croatian king and his men were executed, and many Lustrovelian peasants became nobles after stealing possessions of the Croatian nobles.
In 1161, however, an alliance among the Byzantine Empire, Hungary and Venice invaded and partitioned Lustrovelia among themselves. However, the instability of the Byzantine Empire and Hungary caused the independence of Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia by 1184. At this point, Lustrovelia was divided among five nations. Only in April 1293 Lustrovelia would regain its independence, with the revolt of the Five nations. It was an international revolt, led by four noblemen and a noblewoman. After twelve years of war, independence was achieved, and the Kingdom of Morena was established.
In 1306 Astremiro Urbokio was crowned king of Morena. In 1310 Astremiro decided to expand towards Bosnia and Serbia and won the war. In the next 150 years, Morena also annexed several coastal provinces belonging to Venice and fought against an expansionist Ottoman Empire. In 1470 Hungary tried to annex the northern region of Morena, but what initially was a defensive war, turned to be a conquest in 1474 when the Hungarian king surrendered to Morena and ceded areas of west Hungary.
In 1480 the Ottomans attacked Morena, however, the recently organized Magi Squad of the Morenese army destroyed the Ottomans. Despite the victory against infidels, the Pope excommunicated king Tauro for the use of sorcery. The ottomans lost Albania and the Peloponnese to Morena. In 1490 Tauro attacked Hungary and annexed the rest of the country. In 1520 the Magi Society was founded, and it made the Pope called for a crusade against Morena. It was the beginning of the Forty Years' War.
In 1541 several protestant states joined the war after the creation of the Church of Veltur, named after an excommunicated bishop, an ally of Morena. The bishop was selected as the head of the church, but after his death in 1553 the king was named the head of the church.
The Forty Years' War lasted until 1572. It became as a crusade against the sorcerers and ended as a religious war among Catholics and protestants. The war ended with the annexation of Venice by Morena. In 1575 the Ottomans attacked Morena, but lost again. With another defeat, the Ottoman Empire decided to focus north.
Between 1600 and 1690 Morena started many wars against countries of the Italic Penninsula, such as Ferrara, the Papal States, and Naples, conquering all of the Italian coast of the Adriatic Sea. In 1630 a massive war between the Catholic and Protestant leagues of the Holy Roman Empire started, and Morena joined the protestant league. The war ended in 1680, however, the relations with the Protestant countries of the HRE deteriorated after the annexation of Austria and Bohemia, two catholic kingdoms.
In 1693 the Great War of the Holy Roman Empire was declared by the Holy Roman Emperor, with the objective of reconquering Bohemia and Austria. Despite the superiority of the Morenese magi, the HRE was also supported by several other countries. The war ended in 1739, after the capture of Berlin. Between 1710 and 1730, in the middle of the war, Morense king Levis I also annexed Poland and colonies in West Africa in separate wars - Morena was strong enough to sustain several wars at once.
In 1741 king Osvelo Maestral proclaimed the Empire of Arkania, and performed several reforms in the country. In 1806, Arkania allied with Napoleon, and dismantled the HRE following a three-month war. In 1811, however, Arkania was invaded by France, and a republic was installed. The French occupation lasted for three years. During 1816 and 1821 Arkania recovered lost territories, and in 1824 the 9 December Revolution proclaimed the Imperial Republic of Arkania.
The country took part in the scramble for Africa, colonizing parts of west Africa and the Congo. The country also joined the Central Powers in the Great War. Arkania took heavy casualties and lost the war. In 1939 Arkanian Berlin was invaded by Germany, the start of WW2. Despite several initial defeats, Arkania won the war, and during the Berlin Conference, Arkania, the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom decided to fragment Germany into 15 independent states. The country remained neutral in the Cold War and was the leader of the non-aligned movement.
Arkania's population was estimated to be nearly 158 million in 2019 by the Corporazion Adial di Estatistikas (National Statistics Corporation). The capital, Fortuna, exceeds 12 million. The country is known for its high standard of living. A census is taken every ten years by the National Statistics Corporation, with the first taking place in 1874. About 75% of all Arkanians lives in urban areas. 84% of the population is white, followed by blacks with 7%, East Asians with 3%, mixed race with 3%, and other ethnic groups with 3%.
According to the National Statistics Corporation, 20% of the population is foreign-born or is a descendant of immigrants (second-generation Arkanians). In 2015, 30% of births were to unmarried women. The average age of an Arkanian is 33 years. The life expectancy in 2017 was estimated at 80 years. (78 for men and 82 for women).
Lustrovelian is the official language of Arkania and is spoken by 70% of the population. Other recognized languages at national level include Barilian, Czech, German, Hungarian, Italian, and Polish. Each state can also have their own recognized languages, but Lustrovelian must be the official language. The official use of Lustrovelian is enforced since 1873. Other languages spoken include Serbian, Slovak, Croatian, Albanian, Greek, Bosnian, and Slovene. The most spoken languages among immigrants include Spanish, French, English, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, Vietnamese and Turkish.
Despite the presence of Greek and Yugoslav minorities, the use of Greek and Cyrillic alphabet was banned for 300 years, and these languages had to adequate to the Latin alphabet.
The Velturian Church is the official religion of the Arkanian state. It is followed by 65% of the population. Irreligion comes second with 18%, Catholicism with 7%, Islam with 4%, Judaism with 3%, and other faiths collectively accounts for 3% of the population.

Arkania is a federal elective monarchy. There are 57 federative units in total. Each unit is entitled to elect 6 representatives to the Kongressadial. The head of state is the President, and the head of government is the State Minister. The State Minister is directly elected by the population in elections that take place every four years. In these elections, parliamentarians, local representatives, mayors, and city councilors are also elected.
The President is chosen by the Imperial Committee. The imperial committee consists of 9 members elected by the Council of State and a further 21 permanent positions. Permanent positions are held by the nobility of Arkania. The state council is made up of 50 members chosen by the State Minister. The office of president is for life, and the president can only be removed from the government in 4 ways: dying, resigning, being arrested, or being removed through a referendum called by the Council of State. Although the head of state is elected, the country is legally categorized as a monarchy due to the privileges granted to the president and his family. Even after leaving office, the president and his family will maintain privileges of nobility for three generations.
The level of administration is divided into three spheres: federal, provincial, and municipal. There are four divisions of government: the legislative, the judicial, the executive, and the supervisor. The supervisor is constituted only by the President, represented by his ability to interfere freely in the other three branches.
Most members of the executive and legislative branches are directly elected by the population. Judges and other officials are appointed after passing entry exams. The right to vote is given to literate citizens over 16 years of age who do not have a serious criminal record.
It is important to note that the magi, ruled by the International Sorcery Council, have a say in the government. They have as much influence as big corporate groups and are more influential than any religion.
The Imperial Republic is an active member of the UN and maintains several peacekeeping missions, four in total, all in Africa. The Imperial Republic was a non-aligned country during the cold war and remains neutral to this day. Despite most of its neighbors, the country is not a part of the EU, despite half of the population supporting the organization.
The spending of the military in 2019 was 8% of the GDP. The military is divided into four branches: the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Magi. Arkania has 800 thousand active soldiers and 2 million reservists. In the event of a war, the army will consist of both professional and conscripted soldiers.
The air force has a total of 6,401 aircraft, being 955 fighters, 1223 attack aircraft, 1002 transport aircraft, 2725 helicopters, and 498 attack helicopters. Its largest industries are food processing, information technology, machinery, chemicals, and tourism. The country's economy is focused on exporting food and manufactured goods. The average tax is 35%, which helps to maintain the government's welfare policy. The country is the 3rd largest export economy in the world. Its top trading partners are China, the United States, France, Japan, and Spain. The Arkanian economy stands powerful despite strong regulations and an abundance of worker's rights.
Arkania's agricultural products include cabbage, cattle, corn, dairy products, fruits, pigs, potatoes, poultry, sugar beet, tomato, wheat, and wine. Natural resources are bauxite, coal, cobalt, copper, gold, iron, lead, natural gas, nickel, salt, silver, sulfur, timber, and zinc.
The country's culture is not unitary, and it changes a lot according to the region.
In music, the most popular genres are rock, pop, instrumental (orchestral) music, drum and bass, nu-metal, dubstep, and hip hop. The country is very strong on the international music stage. The state religion of Arkania, Velturism, is a Christian church founded in 1530 in Perceveranzia. It is an episcopal church whose leader is the head of the state, the Arkanian president. The Velturian Church is known for blending the teachings of Jesus Christ with local folklore and even magic. The Velturian church also developed its own version of the bible, replacing most of the old testament and ignoring parts of the new testament.
The magic of this world, practiced in Arkania and other countries, is known to all humans, understood by a few and exercised by some. In this world, magic comes from three sources: artifacts, genetics, and the environment. There are 10 million wizards in Arkania, and another 20 million worldwide.
Few can officially become magicians. The first requirement is to follow a religion that allows the practice of sorcery. It is also necessary to pass an exam. In theory, anyone can be a magician, but most people have genetic blocks that prevent the manipulation of the world's energies. Genetics can also positively influence the mage and can increase his proficiency with magic. The more positive genes a magician has, the sooner he will master the magic.
Magic is an essential part of the world, and is a school subject in many countries around the world, and a source of income for entire industries. There are many ways to invoke energies to use magic. Magic can be used through magic circles (also magic stars and triangles), artifacts, words, imagination, rituals, and a catalyst.
There are some limitations to the arcane system. Exaggerated or constant use of magic can tire the mage, make him sick, hurt him, and perhaps kill the mage. Some artifacts have a usage limit, and exceeding this limit can cause destruction of the artifact or death of the user. Some artifacts are of unlimited use, while others need to be recharged with tellurian or primordial energy.
There are five types of energy in the world:
Anomalous energy, the strongest energy. It opens the portals to other multiverses;
Primordial energy, the energy that supposedly created the universes. Also known as Oimi;
Tellurian energy, necessary for most magic spells. Commonly found as a mineral;
Dead energy, the energy that surrounds the dead;
Humane energy, the energy that surrounds people and animals.
Magic is a science, and there is also a hierarchy in the Congress of Mages, the international body that supervise the actions of mages.
