Queen Nerea

A portrait of Queen Nerea

Queen Nerea I, more commonly referred to as Queen Nerea, was the first female monarch, and by some accounts the wisest monarch, that ever ruled Voxija.

No one knows when Queen Nerea was born, but she reigned from 1604-1635, a period of 31 years. By all accounts, Nerea was a nice, sweet child that never did any harm to anyone. Of course, those accounts were written by her parents.

In 1604, Nerea's uncle, King Domiku, died. There were almost no male relatives in the line of succession, and those that were eligible were idiots. Thus, Nerea was crowned Queen Nerea of Voxija. She wouldn't be declared the first of her name until Queen Nerea II came to power in the twentieth century.

Queen Nerea gained the trust of the Viņak. She achieved this goal in many ways: by taking a Viņak consort, restarting trade with other countries, being the first Voxijan Basque queen, and most importantly, giving the Viņak full and equal rights for the first time. Although young Viņak had been running away from home to join Voxijan Basque culture for quite some time (and vice versa), this happened more often during the Nerean Era.

When Queen Nerea married the Viņak warrior Hetxaralang Euxen, the popularity of interracial marriages exploded, to the point that within two hundred years, barely any Voxijans were fully Basque or Viņak. This was when Voxija adopted the motto "Diversity and Tolerance".

Queen Nerea brought order to the formerly lawless Voxija and ended the rough-and-tumble pioneer period. No, she did more than that, she revitalized Voxija, and most people lived in some kind of prosperity.

There were a lot of rumors and malicious slander around Queen Nerea during her lifetime, mostly because she was a woman. Her children were labelled "half-breeds", and it was said that she only had sex to have children. A less believable rumor was that Queen Nerea killed her uncle to gain the throne.

Queen Nerea never named an heir. When Nerea was about to die, her advisor asked her who she was going to name king. She answered, "I don't know. Let me think about it."

Queen Nerea died of what we now know was cancer in 1635. Her two sons, Argider and Ider, started a civil war to get the throne.
