The Armed Forces of Montevento (Italian: Forze Armate di Montevento, also named as the FF.AA. di Montevento), refer to the national military defense forces of the country of Montevento. It is one of the smallest military forces in the world, with its different branches having varied functions. Since 1895 it has been an all-volunteer force and has a current strength of approximately 5.950 professional soldiers, 2.625 recruits and 1.225 armed civilians.

The FF.AA. di Montevento consist of a total of four branches; the Corpo dei Carabinieri (National Gendarmerie) with 4.809 members, the Esercito Nazionale (National Army) with 2.562, the Marina Nazionale (National Navy) with 1.635 and the Aeronautica Militare (Air Force) with 854, all of which are subordinated to the Doge of the Republic through the Minister of Defense, position held by Mr. Emiliano De Simone since 2019.

Currently, the armed forces of Montevento are mainly used for performing ceremonial duties; patrolling borders; mounting guard at government buildings; and assisting police in major criminal cases or for the defense and protection of the Doge of the Republic, foreign diplomats and foreign heads of state. The Monteventani armed forces also actively participate in peacekeeping missions around the world.

Due to the pacifist nature of the Government of Montevento, the Republic has repeled its right to declare war to foreign nations, being one of the few states in the world with a clausule on its constitution forbidding the declaration of wars or participation on aggressive campaigns, being only able to use military force in case of a direct aggression against Montevento itself or one of its allies.

In 2006 the National Council of Montevento passed a law considerably decreasing the funding of the armed forces (which by law now cannot exceed the 0,5% of the GDP), together with limiting the maximum possible amount of active personnel that the FF.AA. di Montevento can have at times of peace, reducing it to just 9.000 people (not including administrative personnel or unarmed personnel). This was done as an attempt to further demilitarise the country and reduce costs.

The National Army of Montevento (Italian: Esercito Nazionale di Montevento) is the land-based component of the Armed Forces of Montevento. Unlike the Corpo dei Carabinieri, the Esercito Nazionale does not have civil law jurisdiction and cannot intervene in civil matters.

Nowdays, the Esercito mostly participates of peacekeeping missions abroad or performs minor tasks in the Monteventani territories, such as the protection of voting centres during elections, guarding prisons of high security level and providing support to the people of Montevento when natural disasters happen, being responsible for conducting high risk rescues, evacuations and other maneuvers in support of other authorities such as the Fire Department and Police Department.

According to the Monteventani laws, their official mission is "Protect the territorial integrity of the Republic as a whole, its symbols and ideals, ensuring the sovereignty of the nation and its people, as well as provide support during times of war or calamities to those who have previously shown support to the Republic."

The army is under civilian control, with the Doge of the Republic, Christian Saavedra as Commander-in-Chief. The Minister of Defense oversees all army operations. The professional head of the army is the Chief of Defense, position currently held by General Paolo Renna, who answers to the minister.

According to the laws of the Republic, "The National Navy, as an integral member of the Armed Forces, shares its mission to defend the Constitution and the laws of the state, its territorial integrity and the exercise of its authority and maritime police, in order to contribute to the defense of the honor, independence and peace of the Republic."

Currently, the main functions of the navy are the protection of Monteventani waters and controlling the entry of ships illegally to them, which has been a considerable problem due to illegal fishing. The navy also fulfils functions of search and rescue of sunken ships or with damages and provides assistance to any civil ship that could be in some kind of problem.

Throughout its history, the navy has never been actively involved in any war combat, but has participated in special missions to search for damaged ships led by other allied countries and also joint maneuvers.

• SECTIONS OF THE MARINA NAZIONALE

The Monteventani navy has four main sections: the Fleet Command, the Coast Guard, the Materiel Directorate, and the Personnel Directorate.

❖ Fleet Command: It is in charge of most of the actual ships of the fleet, the marines, and the naval aviation bases and aircraft. Most of the Monteventani fleet is based at the Alcadell Port in the Province of Fiume D'Oro.

❖ Coast Guard: The Coast Guard administers the modest Monteventani merchant marine and naval registry. It is responsible for patrolling the coasts of the country, to carry out search and rescue operations and the protection of the marine environment.

❖ Materiel Directorate: The Naval Materiel Directorate preserves and repairs naval equipment, in addition to administering the fleet arsenal and directing hydrological and meteorological studies.

❖ Personnel Directorate: The Personnel Directorate is concerned with human resources and particularly the administration of the Monteventani Naval Academy.

Service Uniform

The Air Force (Italian: Aeronautica Militare) is one of the four main branches of the Armed Forces of Montevento under the Monteventani Ministry of Defense. It was founded in 1953 by orders of the Doge of the Republic when the Military Aviation Academy (Accademia per l'Aviazione Militare) was formed at a small airport 50 km from San Giovanni.

According to Monteventani laws, the mission of the Air Force is "To defend the honor, the independence, and the peace of the Republic, the integrity of its territory, its constitution and its laws. To be an exemplary Air Force, though small according to the possibilities of the country, with a high degree of professionalism and skill, with modern and suitable equipment, capable of dissuasion and being a pride to the nation."

The Aeronautica Militare is the smallest of all the branches of the Armed Forces, with only around 854 active personnel, however, it is the only branch growing in size, also receiving an increasing budget, while the rest loose members yearly due to the demilitarisation efforts of the Government.

The Air Force is currently involved in search and rescue missions, disaster assistance, and transportation to remote locations within the country, such as the small towns and villages found in the south of the country, where access is difficult due to the dense rainforest covering the zone.

• BRIGADES AND SUPPORT GROUPS OF THE AIR FORCE

The Monteventani Air Force has three main brigades and various support groups:

❖ Brigade I: It is the oldest of all the brigades. It is composed of the Transport Squadron and the Helicopter Squadron. The Brigade I controls and coordinates most rescue missions and usually helps with the evacuation of civilians due to natural disasters. It also performs firefighting missions.

❖ Brigade II: The second brigade is composed of the Attack Squadron, Fighter Squadron and Advanced Flight Squadron.

❖ Brigade III: The third brigade is mostly devoted to observation and liaison activities.

The Monteventani Air Force also includes Service divisions for Logistics, Communications and Computer Science, Information, Infrastructure, Maintenance, Meteorology, Health, Remote Aerospace Sensors, and Transport.
