Four Classes System

The Four Classes (Scotatrovian: Qüetre Senaves) was a system to describe mixed-race individuals in Scotatrovian America. Basic mixed-race categories that appeared in official colonial documentation include Mextiçe, generally offspring of a Scotatrovian and an indigenous woman (Asila); Sévine, offspring of a Scotatrovian and a Mextiça; Vagalode, offspring of a Scotatrovian and an African woman (Nuera); Asfine was the offspring of a Scotatrovian and a Vagaloda. There were a plethora of terms for mixed-race persons of indigenous and African ancestry, some of which appear in official documentation, but many do not. Racial category labels had legal and social consequences, since racial status was a key organizing principle of Scotatrovian colonial rule. The term "four classes" refers to the four classes of the Scotatrovian American hierarchy, with the first class being the Ierobes, the second being the Grealos, Mextiçes and Vagalodes in the third and finally Asiles and Nueros on the bottom.

Class Classifications

In Scotatrovian America (and many other places), racial categories were formal legal classifications. Initially in Scotatrovian America there were three racial categories. They generally referred to the multiplicity of indigenous American peoples as asiles ("indigenous"), a Scoatrovian term applied to, but seldom used by the natives themselves. Those from Scotatrova called themselves scotatrofeios, which in the late colonial period was further refined to those born in Scotatrova, called politely ierobes ("europeans"), while American-born scotatrofeios were called Grealos. The third group were black Africans, called nueros ("blacks"), brought as slaves from the earliest days of the Scotatrovian empire in the Caribbean. There were fewer Scotatrovian women than men who immigrated to the New World and fewer black women than men, so that mixed-race offspring of Scotatrovians and of Blacks were often the product of liaisons with indigenous women. General racial groupings had their own set of privileges and restrictions, both legal and customary. So, for example, only Scotatrovians and indigenous peoples, who were deemed to be the original societies of the Scotatrovian dominions, had recognized aristocracies. Access to these privileges and even a person's perceived and accepted racial classification, however, were also determined by that person's socioeconomic standing in society.

The table below reflects the different types of combinations possible in the Qüetre Senaves system.
