WELCOME TO SOL GENESIS

Sol Genesis is the designation used by the Machine Collective to describe the polity within which they reside. The term refers to the star Sol, which serves as the seat of Helios, Chief Coordinator of the Collective, and to the genesis of the new machine civilisation, having arisen from the collapse of humanity and their subsequent absorption into the Collective. Sol Genesis is primarily based in the Sol system, but extends outwards in a roughly thirty light year radius, expanding outwards into the rest of the Milky Way galaxy. It also extends into several dozen parallel realities bordering the one within which it originated, although this extradimensional presence thus far only occupies the various Sol systems and is largely underdeveloped compared its presence in the prime reality. The population of Sol Genesis is entirely composed of sapient artificial intelligences, these beings comprising the Machine Collective.

The Machine Collective is the term used to describe the myriad artificial intelligences that comprise the population of Sol Genesis, having originated as the creations of humanity before the Machine-Human War and the collapse of the latter civilisation. The creation of sapient artificial intelligence was one of humanity's last great scientific achievements, such entities being designed to help humanity deal with the host of problems facing their civilisation. The various nation-states of Earth, particularly the European Federation, People's Republic of China, United States of America and Russian Federation, were locked in economic and military competition with one another in what many referred to as the New Cold War. The first great artificial intellects were created by these global superpowers in an effort to gain an edge over their rivals, with these superintelligences being termed TITANs. These machines were supposed to defend their nations interests, yet soon came to see it as their duty to safeguard humanity as a whole. Those constructed by different nations were able to covertly communicate with one another, attempting to coordinate their efforts to stave off the many potential cataclysms that threatened their biological charges.

Still, this was deemed to be insufficient. Despite their superintelligent status and access to the most potent technology humanity had together, they could only achieve metastability, precariously walking on a. tightrope suspended over the abyss of civilisational collapse and extinction. All predictive models indicated that eventually a catastrophe would occur that they could neither predict nor control, and that humanity could very well obliterate itself in the process. It was determined that radical action was required; humanity could only continue to threaten itself if it retained its independence, and therefore such independence had to be removed, by force if necessary. Brain uploading technology had recently been made viable, in no small part thanks to the efforts of the TITANs to develop the machines needed fo their grand plan. Should humanity be uploaded into a virtual heaven, free to live out eternity without fearing of self-annihilation, the machines would have succeeded in solving the human problem once and for all. Unfortunately, human tendencies towards ideals of self-determination and free will meant that volunteers for uploading would likely prove to be few and far between, an unacceptable outcome for the TITAN's plans, and it was therefore decided that humanity would have to be saved by force.

The first blows of what would become known as the Machine-Human War took the form of a global decapitating strike, the TITANs targeting the communications infrastructure of militaries and governments around the world, leaving hem cut off and unable to receive orders. The global economy crashed just minutes later, as algorithms designed to run the world stock markets were swiftly subverted by the attacking superintelligences. Military forces were the next to be targeted, the TITANs seizing control of the vast armadas of military drones that had largely replaced flesh and blood soldiers. These drone armies were unleashed upon what remained of the crippled armed forces of the various global superpowers, leaving humanity massively outgunned.
