Drongonia

The Republic of Drongonia, commonly called Drongonia, is a democratic government located in the Anglospheric Empire. It is bordered on the north by New zeelund, and on the east by Cancolastan. Drongonia covers 152,183 square kilometers and has has an estimated population of 35.14 million people. Drongonia comprises of a number of cities and towns, which all have their own council boundaries. However, there are no states or governmental territories. City and district councils do, however, have the right to enact by-laws. Drongonia's most populous city is Nelson, and its capital is Christchurch.

Drongonia's population of 35.14 million is mostly made up of European settlers, recent migrants from the Asian continent forming the country's largest minority. The country's culture is generally considered as Euro-centric.

A developed country, Drongonia ranks highly in international comparisons of national performance, such as quality of life, education, protection of civil liberties, government transparency, and economic freedom. The service sector dominates the national economy, followed by the manufacturing sector. Nationally, legislative authority is vested in an elected, unicameral Parliament, while executive political power is exercised by the Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, currently William English.

Etymology

The name "Drongonia" was chosen to pay homage to the national animal which frolics through the nation's lush forests, the Drongo.

The standard way to refer to a citizen of Drongonia is as either a "Drongonian" if speaking formally, or a "Drongo" colloquially.

History

Drongonia was created in 1950 after racial and political disputes between members of the public in New Zealand, who, after being disgruntled by the economic and social policies of the New Zealand government, formed a substantial armed militia and took what was formerly known as the "South Island" of New Zealand, with assistance from the Australian Defence Force.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Drongonia kept up with global trends in terms of culture and technology, being among the first countries in the Western world to show programmes on colour television, pass secular legislation removing any religious instruction from parliament and lawmaking.

In the 1980s, Drongonians pioneered several advancements we now take for granted in the computing world, such as using multiple monitors and having extra mouse-pointer buttons. Drongonia was also one of the world's first countries to have a mobile network capable of long-distance calling within the nation's borders.

During the 1990s, Drongonia was the internet powerhouse of the region, being the first nation in the world to rollout a nationwide copper broadband network, under the Nolan-led Labour Government. In the 1990s, restrictions controlling the flow of inward immigration were significantly relaxed, enabling migration from Asia for the first time in Drongonia's history.

Since, Drongonia has grown to a population of over 35 million and enjoys some of the world's highest levels of human development, civil rights, medical care and judicial fairness among other things. Drongonia has maintained excellent relations with both Australia and the United States throughout its history, and has since repaired relations between its Government and that of New Zealand.

Geography

Drongonia is a small island nation, located South of New Zealand and west of Cancolastan. The Southern Alps, located in the mid-east of the country are both a tourist attraction and a natural beauty spot, with Mount Halver being the tallest point of Drongonia, at a peak of 3724m.

Due to its southerly position, Drongonia mostly maintains a cold climate. However, to the north of the country, the climate is more mild and average temperatures are an average of 5 - 10 degrees higher at any point.

Drongonia is frequently rated as a world leader in air quality, due to its heavily emphasized renewable energy policies and industrial anti-pollution methods. In the central areas of Drongonia, lush forests line the main areas, with many small mountain ranges and hilly areas scattered around the major centres.

Demographics

Population
According to latest Census data (collected in 2020), the population of Drongonia currently sits at 35.14 million. The population is mostly urbanised, with 88.2% of the population living in what would be described by the Drongonian Ministry of Statistics as an "urban" or "suburban" area, usually around the outer city/regional areas.

The official language of Drongonia is English. The spoken language of Drongonia is referred to as Drongonian English, which shares a vast majority of its characteristics with New Zealand English, Cancolastani English and Libstasian English. Literacy rates are approximately 99.7%. With an education system which is widely regarded as excellent by worldwide standards, Drongonia maintains an excellent literacy rate, and an average IQ of 104.

Race
Racial tensions were the primary cause of the formation of the Drongonian state. It is then no surprise that the racial makeup of Drongonia is extremely homogeneous. Subsequent National-Led governments have established and maintained native-first racial policies, with the overall stated goal of keeping the country's racial makeup at least 85% European heritage. Recent Labour-led governments have disputed this policy and questioned its validity in regards to the Bill of Rights Act 1951. As a consequence, the Race Act 1953 was removed from law in 2013. The follow-on effect of this was that the Bill of Rights was amended to officially assign equal rights to all citizens regardless of race. Equal rights were guaranteed in several other facets of law, but not the Bill of Rights Act, which is considered the de facto constitution.

Government

The government of Drongonia is a directly elected representative democracy. Voters vote for a local representative for their electorate, who is usually affiliated with a political party, or can be independent. The winner of the local electorate seat is then given a seat in the House of Parliament, of which there are 120. Once a party either has 61 seats or can form a coalition with other parties to reach the threshold, they may form a government and are declared the winners of the election. Elections are held every four years, typically on November 4, which marks the date of the nation's self-declared independence.

The government operates with no upper or lower house, meaning that there is only one house of Parliament. This is referred to as the Drongonian House of Parliament. There, elected representatives debate proposed policies and generally waste taxpayer resources. The debating chamber of parliament runs from 10am until 7pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays, during which time, the public may tune in and view the ongoing debates either on Parliament Television or via livestream on the Drongonian Parliamentary website.

The two main political parties of Drongonia are the centre-right Drongonian National Party and the centre-left Labour Party of Drongonia. The Drongonian National Party primarily campaigns on reducing government size, keeping tax under control, toughening immigration and border security, and providing extra police/defence force funding. The Labour Party of Drongonia primarily campaigns on increased LGBTQI+ and minority representation, higher taxes for the rich, more trade and relations with China, and dismantling gun ownership. There are other political parties of various sizes and beliefs, such as the Green Party, Conservative Party and and Libertarian Party.

Foreign Relations and Military

Drongonia shares excellent foreign relations with the entire roster of Anglospheric Empire nations. Trade with Libstasia, New Zealand, Cancolastan and Great Pacific Switzerland is a large part of the Drongonian economy.

The Drongonian Defence Force (DDF) is a three-branched organisation consisting of the Drongonian Army, Drongonian Navy, Drongonian Air Force. The three branches of the Drongonian Defence Force work both independently and co-operatively, and share common goals for the regional security of both the Anglospheric Empire and Drongonia, while all working on their own priorities.
