Guide to the Carlosian Armed Forces

[size=200][b]CARLOSIAN ARMED FORCES[/b][/size][/align]

The [b]Carlosian Armed Forces[/b] is the military of the Federal Republic of Carloso. It comprises five primary branches; the Army, Navy, Air Force, Naval Infantry and Space Command. By far the largest of these is the Carlosian Army, The President of the Executive Council, currently Cárlos Tobón, acts as the supreme commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, and formulates military policy alongside the Department of Defence. On a day-to-day basis, the Armed Forces are under the jurisdiction of the Department and the Chief of the General Staff, who oversee the allocation of equipment and funding. The Armed Forces are charged primarily with the projection of Carloso's soverign territory, airspace and foreign interests, with significant power projection capabilities. Historically, the Armed Forces were mainly concerned with waging warfare on-land against other powers in Musgorocia. Since the beginning of the 21st century, however, the scope of operations undertaken by the Armed Forces beyond Musgorocia has grown substantially. Complementing the Armed Forces are various provincial militias, paramilitary organisations and the Republican Guard, the latter of which is distinct from the Armed Forces and answers directly to the President.

[size=150][b]DOCTRINE/MILITARY THEORY[/b][/size][hr]Firstly, it is necessary to understand how modern Carlosian military doctrine came about before we can describe it in detail or even generally. To do this, we look to the history of Carloso and the continent of Musgorocia. From its independence in 1581 up to the Bourgougian Blitz in 1987, Carlosian foreign and military policy was mainly concerned with containing the threat posed by the neighbouring regional power of Bourgougia and, to a less extent, Barssois. The rapid increase in population in the three countries during the intermediate centuries allowed them to sustain sizeable standing militaries. However, the potential for catastrophic destruction on the continent and belief that their sovereignty was constantly under threat from colonial powers generally dissuaded them from warring with each other, except for a few occasions throughout history. It wasn't until the Emergency War from 1946–1951 that things truly came to a head in Musgorocia. While Carlosian military theory and technology had evolved little since 1914, Synarchist Bourgougia had incorporated many foreign ideas from contacts outside of the continent, allowing them to quickly devastate Agostinian and Carlosian formations. Within two years, all of Agostinia had been occupied and the Bourgougian Army was bearing down on Madrigal. Nevertheless, the Carlosians rapidly learned and used their superior industrial capacity to eventually match their Bourgougian enemies on the field, pushing them back from the capital city in what became known as the Miracle at Madrigal. Three more years of war followed, ending when Carloso killed hundreds of thousands of Bourgougian soldiers with nuclear bombs and the country's home front collapsed under the strain of war.

The peace lasted for three decades. After a series of weak governments, Bourgougia was taken over by a communist regime in the 1960s. Seeking to recover the Carlosian exclave of Victory, it invaded the city and assassinated Carlosian President Liam Moran. In this case, the Bourgougians severely underestimated the power and technological advances of the Carlosian military e.g GPS. and lost almost every battle in the early stages of the war. Eventually, Bourgougia once again collapsed and was torn apart by a civil war that lasted until 2001. Impoverished, financially crippled and with many areas of the country still in ruins, Carloso no longer considers Bourgougia a threat. Going into the 21st century, Carloso and Barssois signed a treaty of mutual economic cooperation and defence, effectively ensuring peace between the great powers of Musgorocia, and thus allowing Carloso to look beyond its shores to expand its influence and form ties with other countries.

And so all was peaceful, that was until the Blue Revolution in 2010, which eventually saw effective end of liberal democracy in Carloso. Consequently, the role of the military has evolved with this change. Since then, there has been major transformation of military doctrine.

The brigade is perhaps the most important unit of the modern Army, formulated by Carlosian military officers following experiences in the Bourgougian Blitz and observation of the Wenchuan Civil War and Nifonese campaign in Annam. It became apparent that slow, inflexible division-sized formations were becoming increasingly outdated as warfare going into the 21st century was becoming more driven by manoeuvrability and evolution of information and communications technology. With the principal of subsidiarity in mind, theorists concluded that the solution to this problem was breaking the divisions up into brigades and equipping them to operate independently on a tactical level in the combat environment, thus greatly improving their resilience, ability to respond to situations effectively and decentralizing the C4RISTA network, thus making the Carlosian military more resilient as a whole to 'decapitation strikes' or potential destruction of strategic platforms.
