Lunderfrau is comprised of ten duchies.

Pre-Human Civilization (B.C.E 100,000- B.C.E 10,000)

The earliest known evidence of humans in what is now modern day Lunderfrau date to between 70,000 and 60,000 years ago. Isolation due to glaciation during the major ice ages is believed to have contributed to the fact that Lunderfrausian women average 6ft 2 inches (1.88 meters) while men average 5 ft 7 inches (1.7 Meters). Ancient human settlements have been found mostly hugging the northern coast, archeologists and anthropologists believe that early Lunderfrausians more than likely clustered around the deciduous forests of the north as well as the warmer climate near the coast.

The Saliventisian Republic (B.C.E 973- C.E 597)

Aside from a few small agrarian kingdoms and cheifdoms popping up here and again. Civilization truly did not start in Lunderfrau until 973 BCE with the founding of city state of Saliventa on the northern coast (Modern day Salzwinde). Originally a Queendom, Saliventa would overthrow it's monarchy and establish a republic in 570 B.C.E. The Republic of Saliventa thrived for over a millenia and established the eastern and northern borders of today's Lunderfrau. The Republic slowly began to decline as once isolated tribes known as the Lunders in the southern mountain chains expanded into the valleys and plains to the north and west. The Long Wars, as the period has come to be known, Raged between the Saliventans and the Lunders between C.E 120-C.E 597. In C.E 597, Saliventa was sacked, it's senate disbanded and executed and it's peoples either killed or enslaved.

The Lunder Civil War (1067-1102)

In 1067, the Empress Hilda the 4th passed quickly, unexpectedly and without an eligable heir. The 10 Duchies of the Empire convened in Salzwinde to select a new Empress. Two candidates emerged from the debating as the likely sucessor; Angela Bauer, Duchess of Grenzland, and Heidi Roth, Duchess of Allestern. However, results were tied with the Duchies of Grenzland, Hinterwalder, Vorderlande, Sudland and Eiswasser supporting Bauer while the Duchies of Ardenne, Goldtal, Herzland, Rauchwalder and Allestern supported Roth. After 14 months of heated debate, the Duchies armed themselves for conflict. For 35 years, the Lunder Civil war raged, claiming over 200,000 lives. When the dust finally settled from the conflict, neither side could be declared victor. In 1102, the Duchies met again, this time in the small mountain town of Laubenhugel to hash out an uneasy peace. The treaty of Laubenhugel stated that that the Empire of Lunder was defunct and that the United Duchies of Lunderfrau was to be it's sucessor nation. The Empress of this nation would be known as the Imperatrix and she would be selected every ten years from the Duchess Electorate. With the treaty ratified on the 5th of December 1102, the Lunder Civil War was over and the United Duchies of Lunderfrau was born.

The United Duchies of Lunderfrau (1102-1694)

While "United" in word and spirit, the Duchies that comprised the UDL we're anything but. The degree of autonomy given to the duchies by the treaty of Laubenhugel allowed them to field their own armies and war with one another. The Imperatrix, while powerful in terms of influence and prestige, could do little to interfere in the internal wars. The UDL period is known as the "Golden Age of Battle" amongst Lunderfrausian Historians, as war between duchies was common and clashes of armies occured almost weekly in the nation. As time went on however, the Duchies became less and less involved in electing the Imperatrix and began to yield more and more power to the position. Eventually in 1694, the Imperatrix Katherine of the Klein family disbanded the Duchies electorate and declared herself the Kaiserin of the "Matriarchy of Lunderfau". The Duchies, having exhausted themselves in internal warfare as well as having given up nearly 90% of all tax collection duties, were relatively powerless to stop Katherine, who had quietly amassed a large army of mercenaries unbeknownst to the internally focused duchies. The Eiswasser Agreement, signed on March 17th 1694, stripped the Duchies of Elector status and established the Kaiserin as head of state. While the Duchies lost elector status, they did retain control of their lands and were still given status as members of the Nobility.

Founding Years of the Matriarchy of Lunderfrau to today (1694-Present Day):

The Klien Dynasty produced two Kaiserin between 1694 and 1703 before being deposed in a bloodless coup de ta by the Imperial Legion. The Legion, in turn, placed Duchess Evelyn Von Strauss on the throne as the 3rd Kaiserin of Lunderfrau. Evelyn moved the capitol of Lunderfrau from the major port city of Salzwinde to the small town of Laubenhugel in the Duchy of Ardenne where she and her family had ruled since duchies were formed. The Von Strauss Dynasty has led Lunderfrau since then, having had 17 Kaiserins on the throne. For the first 100 years after the fall of the Klien dynasty, Lunderfrau kept a mostly inward focus, only interacting with neighbors in order to secure trade or sell goods. However, since the early 1800s, Lunderfrau has engaged in diplomatic discourse with neighboring states on the continent as well as those abroad.

Lunderfrau is an Absolute Monarchy led by the Kaiserin. There are two branches of government in Lunderfrau, the First is the executive branch led by the Kaiserin. This branch has absolute authority in terms of law and order, they are also the commander of Lunderfrau's armed forces, all national government agencies are directly under the executive branch. The legislative branch consists of the Chamber of Nobility. The Chamber of Nobility comprises the ten families (1 representative per family) that rule the various duchies of Lunderfrau. They have the power to levy new laws and taxes, however the Kaiserin has final say and can overule decisions made by the chamber. There is no voting, no political parties and no elections on the national level in Lunderfrau. However, some duchies and most cities hold elections for city and government offices outside of the Duchies themselves.
Unlike most nations, the Kaiserin is supreme arbiter of the law as well as head of state. The Kaiserin personally selects the grand arbiters for each Duchy who then serve for life, most arbiters on the local city level are elected officials. As supreme arbiter, the Kaiserin can overturn rulings made by any other arbiter in the judicial system. Because of the fact the Kaiserin is both the enforcer and interpreter of laws, most cases rarely make it past the grand arbiters and those that due tend to be tossed out by the Kaiserin herself.

The Imperial Armed Forces consist of 640,000 enlisted members. The Armed Forces are broken into three branches, the Imperial Legion (500,000 enlisted troops, 2,000 Tanks, 500 IFVs, 300 Self Propelled Artillery), the Imperial Air Force (90,000 enlisted members, 1,000 Multirole/Air Superiority Fighters, 500 Attack Aircraft, 85 Transport Helicopters, 45 Transport Aircraft, 115 Attack Helicopters) and the Imperial Navy (50,000 Sailors, 6 Cruisers, 18 Destroyers and 36 Frigates).
The Imperial Legion is considered to be one of the best fighting forces in all of Lira. Boasting state of the art Tanks, IFVs and artillery, it is more than a match for the various militaries found on the continent. Of special note is the 118th Legionares, widely known by their nickname “The Kaiserin’s Hell Hounds”or simply “Hell Hounds”. Specializing in forward deployment into enemy territory, asset recovery/extraction and counter terrorism operations among other things.
On the flip side, the Imperial navy is considered drastically underfunded and lacking in ships and personel, however the Navy does boast a relatively advanced anti ship missile battery system that provides coverage to most of Lunderfrau’s northern Coast.

Lunderfrau is a manufacturing and refinement economy with major sectors including Steel, Automotive, Military Industrial and Munitions. Most of Lunderfrau’s main exports include Cars, Railcars/Engines, ball bearings and other industrial goods needed in the manufacturing process. However, Lundefrau’s most well known export may be it’s military vehicles which include Tanks and IFVs. Lunderfrau’s main imports include electronics, aircraft, food stuffs, lumber, non-food agricultural goods and rubber.
