Imperial Misthophoroi
Misthophori, or mercenary units, refer to forces that, while working for the Crown or theme, are typically hired for a limited time rather than on a permanent contract. This is usually to complete a specific role or attempt to hide Imperial dealings in foreign areas, but are also often hired when the Imperium is in desperate need of bodies for a campaign or two.Privateers
Privateer forces are primarily used by Shokou due to actually having foreign targets to attack. Privateers are obviously highly driven by money, and typically get scared off unless commanded by a captain whose goals align with whatever the Imperium's paying them. Due to looser weapon sales restrictions than in the home provinces, privateers often have access to thematic infantry as well as strikers.
