Defensive Assets of the Bureaucracy

Yegla Islands has, throughout its relatively brief existence, remained highly defensive in both foreign and domestic policy. Though its armed forces are indeed powerful, they are primarily thought of as a means of defense, and Yegla Islands has yet to declare any offensive wars. The islands are aided in their defensibility not only by the massive navy patrolling their waters, but also by several defensive mechanisms, both natural and artificial, integrated into their very structure. Some more prominent examples are detailed below.

The Serpent's Teeth

The Serpent's Teeth (sometimes known as the Shipbreakers' Ring or Czar's Fingers) are a vaguely ring-shaped conglomeration of reefs, rock formations and small islets that mark the approximate boundary of Yeglan territorial waters. Their dimensions and shape vary, but most are composed of jagged, hardened volcanic stone, and are visibly pointed (thus earning them their moniker). It is thought that no less than 11,000 individual geological formations make up this phenomenon, though they are merged in places and therefore difficult to properly quantify. Their positioning and shape makes for an excellent natural defense, as their traversal is incredibly hazardous to any vessel over a certain size - previous attempts at entry by foreign navies and illicit pirate vessels have usually resulted in extensive hull damage to the ships in question, and a number of shipwrecks. Several of these hulks are still present, embedded at various points along the Teeth, and present a further hazard to potential invaders. Safe entry points do exist, but most are well-documented and have been fortified accordingly. In addition, an overwhelming number of the geological formations making up the Teeth have been refitted into naval fortifications and autonomous defensive systems, both obvious and concealed. While such structures are at their highest concentration in the vicinity of potential entry points, their scattering ensures acceptable coverage of practically the entire circumference of the archipelago, alongside a large radius around it. Typical defensive modules of this nature are heavily armed, using technologies including but not limited to:

  • Kinetic Batteries
Various calibers, typically possessive of a far higher refire rate than their ship-mounted counterparts, owing to greater potential allowances for mass and bulk with regards to powerplants and cooling systems.

  • Cruise Missiles
Various payloads and variants, both nuclear and non-nuclear.

  • Ballistic Missiles
Various payloads and variants, both nuclear and non-nuclear.

  • SAM Batteries
    Various specifications.

  • Thaumic Delivery Systems
    Upscaled, purpose-built variants.

  • Torpedoes
    Special-designation, typically supercavitating.

Scattered reefs, rock formations and minefields persist within the ring and throughout Yeglan waters, providing further difficulty for anyone that does manage to breach through. These also complicate traversal for civilian and Yeglan military vessels, though a sophisticated satellite navigation network and painstaking logistics have significantly reduced the number of accidents in recent years. Military bases are also positioned throughout the many islands and islets making up the archipelago itself, for both the housing and maintenance of naval vessels and potential bombardment of invaders. The aforementioned satellite navigation system also acts as a surveillance and monitoring network, coupled with various terrestrial sensors, allowing the movements of almost every ship within Yeglan territory to be tracked with pinpoint precision. Even Yeglan cities are generally fortified, and most inhabited islands feature coastal defense networks of varying complexity.

The Arachne System

A secondary defensive system designed to back up the Teeth, primarily geared towards the interception of enemy aircraft and/or ballistic missiles that make it past the initial coverage zone and into Yeglan airspace. Arachne consists of a loosely-organized, multi-tiered network of primarily missile-based assets scattered throughout the Yeglan archipelago, engineered to provide nigh-absolute coverage against airborne attack vectors at functionally any altitude. Subcomponents of the system may be found as fixed installations, mounted on dedicated defensive vessels, or as part of purpose-deployed, heavily modified interceptor squadrons.

The Vedogon System

In response to mounting public concern over a major meteor strike within a few hundred kilometers of the Yeglan archipelago, several government agencies commenced work on a system capable of defending the nation against extraatmospheric threats, should the need arise. Dubbed "Vedogon", it was initially composed of a network of 12 "Glaz" satellites, in geosynchronous orbit over various sections of Yeglan territory, as well as several central "Nerv" stations, located in various Yeglan military complexes.
Each satellite unit is equipped with a highly modified system, similar in design to standard Yeglan kinetic batteries, but far larger in size, capable of firing in a vacuum. In a single volley, the fully-operational system is theoretically capable of destroying any stellar object, up to around 20 kilometers in diameter, before it presents a threat to Yegla Islands or the surrounding territory. The satellites are also capable of being directed towards planetside targets, although the Yeglan government has assured its neigbor-states that hostile actions via use of the system will not be undertaken against them.

Following the discovery of multiversal space, the Ministry of Science has concluded that the statistical prevalence of hostile, imperialist forces with advanced spacefaring capabilities presented an obvious hazard to Yeglan sovereignty. As such, the Vedogon initiative received additional funding, and has been significantly expanded in scope to include a slew of planetary defensive options. The core satellite system has been retrofitted and redesigned, with each unit now housing an array of high-yield thaumic projectors (allowing for more esoteric and/or supportive functions), alongside greatly improved armor and conventional offensive capabilities. This makes each and every Vedogon satellite capable of functioning as a de-facto orbital strikecraft, and grants the entire network equivalent casting power to a Caster Armada. The number of units in service has also been raised from 12 to ███, and their coverage has been expanded to encompass the entirety of the planet.

Following initial difficulties in the establishment of the CONURBATUS webway, an extensive stabilization initiative has allowed for the establishment of a reactive, last-ditch defensive system spanning practically every military installation on Yeglan soil, and operating on a separate framework from the civilian housing fractalization net. Installations secured by means of CONURBATUS/Ajax may, in the event of an imminent strike of sufficient magnitude to inflict critical damage and/or unacceptable personnel casualties, be shifted into specialized safe-planes of their own, private webway. Thus-affected locales will be placed into private pockets of webspace, and their baseline-parallel location will instead be occupied by an intert structural substrate of equivalent volume. These pockets are localized, and linked to the central military transit network by means of conceptually-shielded apertures, allowing for the recovery of personnel and equipment post-shift. Alternatively, the installation may re-shift into its original location and plane, displacing the remains of its replacement-substrate, and resuming normal functionality.
