The Creslonian National Army (CNA) is the land warfare service branch of the Creslonian National Defence Force. As the oldest and most senior branch of the Creslonian military in order of precedence, the modern CNA has its roots in the Creslonian Revolutionary Army, which was formed (6 July 1784) to fight the Creslonian Revolutionary War (July-October)—before the Republic of Creslonia was established as a country. A high emphasis is placed on the reserve and civilian supporting aspects of the CNA and CNDF in general.

As a uniformed military service, the CNA part of the Directorate of the Army, which is one of the three branch military directorates of the Ministry of Defence. The Creslonian National Army is headed by a civilian senior appointed civil servant, the Director of the Army and by a chief military officer, the Chief of Staff of the Army (CSA) who is also a member of the Combined Chiefs of Staff. It is the second-largest military branch, and currently, the projected strength of the regular army is 3,000 and 2,000 for the reservists. There are also 1,620 civilians working for and with the Army. The Creslonian National Army is the major ground-based offensive and defensive force of the Republic of Creslonia.

Mission

As stated in the Creslonian Constitution, Article V, Section 3:

The mission of the Army is to train, equip, and maintain competent combat-ready land forces capable of deterring aggression and preserving the peace, security, and sovereignty of the Republic of Creslonia and its allies.

Formation

Creslonia's first organised fighting force was formed at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Originally called the 'Creslonian Revolutionary Army', this group of freedom fighters armed with stolen and handmade muskets managed to fight against an authoritarian British rule that had been crippled by the American Revolutionary War and severe debt.

Once the Revolution was won, the Creslonian Revolutionary Army was reformed as the 'Creslonian National Army'. It would remain largely inactive until the 20th century.

20th Century

The Creslonian Civil War was the first great test of the CNA. Alexander Graham's recently formed Creslonian Fascist Party (FCP) had taken over the Municipal Hall of Westport on the 23rd of March 1938. The commander of the Creslonian joint Army and Air Force base on Far-West Island was sympathetic towards the CFP. He allowed his soldiers to defect to their cause and gave equipment over to the CFP fighters, who recoloured the uniforms brown.

The CFP had taken over all of West Island and most of the Northern Isles. However, they had been prevented from gaining ground in East Island thanks in no small part to the Creslonian National Army during the Battle of the H1 Bridges. The CDF base on the island was still loyal to the government and by Christmas of 1939, the CFP and their supporters had been pushed all the way back to Far-West Island. Provincial Militia had rallied in the Northern Isles and had almost won on that front as well. It would be another year before Graham shot himself and Westport was finally recaptured.

The CNA spent the rest of World War Two constructing coastal defences along East Island and setting up coastal gun emplacements in the Northern Isles that were never used. Some of the Northern Isles' batteries are still open for tourists.

Contemporary History

The CNA has participated in some overseas peacekeeping missions, although now it primarily engages in exercises.

Organisation

The Creslonian National Army has always been organised by the central government. Conscription can be enacted during wartime through the Personnel Selection System.

The Creslonian National Army is the second largest branch of the CNDF. It emplys versatile infantry equipped with a wide array of weapons (from assault rifles to grenade launchers). The infantry are aided by motorised elements (such as the LAV-99 APC). The CNA does not have any main battle tanks, although it did consider purchasing Leopards in the 80s and 90s. The Creslonian National Army is very large and has many behicles for a country the size of Creslonia.

Structure

Units are organised into battalions and then companies. Brigades can be formed out of multiple battilions and armoured companies for major strategic operations. Personnel are stationed at either East Island Joint Force Base or Far-West Island Joint Force Base.

Dress

The uniform of the Creslonian Revolutionary Army was made by civilian supporters led by Eleanor Garrick (a member of the Gang of Five). It was the same style as other European armies and the US army, with a tricorn hat, high socks, coloured jacket and facings, etc. The uniform was green, although sources vary on whether exactly it was light green or dark green.

After the revolution, the uniform was maintained up until the early 19th century, when it was modernised to (once again) fit with the European style. The tricorn was replaced with a shako cap and the jacket and trousers were very dark green. The jacket had silver/gold buttons, and black straps and braids. This uniform is almost identical to the British 'Green Jackets'.

By the turn of the century, the uniform had been modernised to be more simplistic. A dark green wide-brimmed campaign hat was issued along with a lighter green shirt and trousers. When World War 1 ended, the CNA adopted the German style stahlhelm and modified it slightly so that the parts covering the ears did not drop so far down. A different shade of green was also used for the modernised uniforms.

After World War 2, the CNA began importing Dutch uniforms. These include Army and Marine uniforms. Both adopted the Dutch camouflage pattern and Dutch helmet with strap for foliage. When not in combat, soldiers wear a green beret. Commissioned officers ceremonial comprises a green peaked cap with a light green jacket and trousers. White epaulettes, boots, and facings are also worn.
