The Empire of Mare Nostrum Master Dispatch

Hello, and welcome to The Empire of Mare Nostrum!

NationStates can be a confusing game for beginners. One of the most confusing aspects for new players are the regions--what they are and how to get involved in one? With this guide, we hope to answer frequently asked questions and give you an idea of how to take your first steps in our Empire!

1. What is a region?

A region is a community of NS players. Because NationStates is a political simulation, each community is usually organized by some government with a political life of its own. This is the case with the Empire of Mare Nostrum.

2. What is Mare Nostrum?

The Empire of Mare Nostrum is an Imperialist region, heavily inspired by the Roman Empire. As such, it is governed by the Emperor and the Legatus, Tribunal, and Senatorial Prefects, who serve collectively under the Emperor as the Triumvirate.

Most of activity in Mare Nostrum occurs on its off-site forum and Discord server. To fully participate in the political life of the region, as well as national RP and other activities, you should apply for citizenship!

3. How does our Government work?

The government is split into three branches, although not in the way you would expect ;-) Our government is split into Military (impossible to uphold the legacy of Rome without it), Civil and Legislative.

  • Civil government effectively runs the region, administrating the matters relating to RP and other cultural activities, recruitment to the region, relationships with other regions, etc. The civil government is run under the oversight of the Tribunal Prefect. The Tribunal Prefect is elected by the citizens of the Empire of Mare Nostrum. Joining the government is recommended for the new players, as it opens up many opportunities to distinguish yourself in Mare Nostrum.

  • The Senate is of course our legislative branch. If you want to participate in making laws for our region, you should run for the seat! The Senate is currently made up of 7 seats elected directly by the citizens of the Empire. Senators, in turn, elect from among themselves a Senatorial Prefect who presides over the business of the legislative.

  • The Military is made up of Legates and is directed by the Legatus Prefect, the Emperor's appointee. We are an Imperialist region, which means that we use our army for the glory of the Empire! All citizens are welcome encouraged to enlist.

4. What is the World Assembly and how does it work?

The World Assembly, or WA for short, is an international body, that passes resolutions which make up international law. Membership in the WA is voluntary, though recommended (since hey, it is a game mechanic!). To apply for membership in the WA, go to this page. Every nation in the WA (you can have only one) may cast a vote on the resolution, but a nation with the highest amount of endorsements in the region (the Delegate) uniquely adds its endorsement count to its vote.

The World Assembly Delegate (WAD) is elected by the citizens for a term of 4 months and represents our region in the WA. The WAD votes on resolutions based on suggestions of the citizenry. On the off-site forums, you can get more involved in the international law-making by commenting on the resolution at vote or drafting your own for the endorsement of Mare Nostrum's WAD. The current World Assembly Delegate is Of higher razaria. Joining the World Assembly and endorsing the Delegate (as well as other nations in the region) is recommended. The higher the endorsement count of the Delegate, the stronger EMN's collective voice is in the WA. Endorsing other nations in the region leads to the smoother transitions of the Delegacy and helps grow regional influence. Not to mention, nations usually will endorse you back!

5. How can I apply for citizenship in the region?
  • Go to our Linkoff-site forums.

  • Register an account.

  • Post a citizenship application by making a new topic in the Custom's Office (form is found in the pinned thread).

  • Optionally, you can also introduce yourself in The Gate, citizens of Mare Nostrum like to welcome new faces!

  • You should be approved within 12-24 hrs of posting the application!

Aside the above, you can join the official Empire of Mare Nostrum's LinkDiscord server. Though it is by no means required for citizenship, you miss out on a good chunk of discussion if you limit yourself solely to the forums.
