The Apostolic Church, also known as the Aurelian Apostolic Church, is the largest and oldest Christian church in Elparia, with approximately 370 million baptized Apostolics throughout the region as of 2010. As the region's oldest, continuously functioning Christian institution, it has played a prominent role in the history and development of the region. The Church is headed by the Prince-Archbishop of Aurelia and Patriarch of Caero-Minachia, who holds the title of Pontifex Maximus and is more commonly known as the Pontifex, Pontiff, or pope. Its central administration is located on the Lucernine Hill in the complex surrounding the All Saints' Basilica in Aurelia, a city within the Caero-Minachian Empire that is nominally ruled directly by the Church, independent of any Provincial government.

Name

The Apostolic Church is officially known as the "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church," however, as this name is used by other churches, it is commonly known as just the Apostolic Church.

Organization

The Church is led by the Prince-Archbishop of Aurelia and Patriarch of Caero-Minachia, who holds the title of Pontifex Maximus. However, unlike other churches, the Pontifex is not supreme over all of the Church, and each nation has its own division of the Church and its own leader, known as Patriarchs, who manage the Church at a national level, though they themselves are not supreme in their own patriarchates. This practice is known as Autocephaly. The Church is further organized into archdioceses (led by archbishops), then Dioceses (led by bishops), then parishes, led by local priests and pastors.
Within parishes, smaller churches often elect their pastors, while larger, Presiding Churches will commonly have their priests appointed by the national Patriarch on advice of the local Bishop. There are also different types of bishop, such as metropolitans, primates, and cardinals.
The Pontifex is elected by the College of Cardinals, who are special Bishops and Archbishops that have been entrusted with special authority, serving as the Church's governing council. They are appointed by the Pontifex on advice of the local Patriarch, usually with an election within the regional Church.
In the Kingdom of Essotori, since there are currently no reported Apostolics and the current regime oppresses religious dissidents, the Patriarch of Essotori rules as a Patriarchate-in-Exile in Portown, Treka, being the Patriarch for Essotori expats and their descendants. Similarly, the Patriarch of Eugrela (a former country recently conquered by Essotori) rules in San Niccolò, Santomare City, in Santomare.

Liturgy

The Church primarily uses a Latin Minachian Liturgy, which is available in all nations for those who desire it, but the Church believes that using regional languages is crucial to spreading the Word, so local liturgies are frequently used, such as the German Liturgy in Corusconia and the English Liturgy in Treka.
