A Slight Overview of the Smaragdin Kaiserdom

Smaragdinsel

Geography

To be determined...

Etymology

Smaragdinsel translates directly into "Emerald Island" in German. The former German colony was and is still known primarily for the emerald mines on the island.

History (if this is too long, click here.)

1583 - The city-state of Hushar is founded by Numav of Razzgriz

1594 - The city-state is officially established into the Empire of the Eastern Isles along with Cheoju as the official Basa of Oscesha.

(the following time period will be further expanded on based upon ideas with Razzgriz

1825 - Prior to the finding of emeralds, the Hushar city-state could no longer sustain itself. Thus, many of the Razz colonists left to Cheoju and possibly the islands of Kleine, Gottlobinsel & Berlinerinsel.

1844 - Prussian explorer, Ludwig Konstantin, finds the uninhabited island and establishes a colony on it's eastern shore in the modern capital of Isaakshafen(eye-sihks-haw-fen). At the time, the colony was established as Frederickhafen, in honor of Frederick William IV. Where he established the colony was the actual former city-state Hushar, however, much of the architecture was Germanized to better fit the means of the explorers and their culture.

1852 - All of the island is discovered and is named Smaragdinsel, as well as officially becoming a Prussian colony under the same name. Smaragdinsel is the only colony pre-unification to succeed.

1860 - The population bursts as vast emerald deposits are found among the island. New towns, such as Heidelberg, Albertstadt and Söldneroase, all established by a young explorer named Gottlob Isaak.

1871 - The German Empire is officially formed in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles on January 18, 1871. Two days later, Ludwig Konstantin dies at the age of 70 and Gottlob Isaak is put in charge of the colony by William I.

1888 - Wilhelm II is the new ruler of the German Empire. He allows Gottlob Isaak to lead a team to explore islands around Smaragdinsel. The islands of Kleine, Wilhelminsel(modern Gottlobinsel), and Berlinerinsel are founded.

1889 - A small force from Smaragdinsel is sent to the islands, with the task of removing the dying members of tribes there. The establishments of these natives were burned down to emphasize German culture. Historians expect the natives to be possible descendants of the original Hushar city-state. This is known as the "Große Verbrennung", or the Great Burning.

1900 - The city of Albertstadt experiences great industrialization due to the booming emerald market.

1910 - The city becomes more populated then Frederickhafen(Isaakshafen - Modern).

1914 - After a series of declarations of war due to the Balkan Powder Keg getting blown up with the death of Franz Ferdinand, the Germans enter WW1.

1915 - With the beginning of the war and the British blockade, the emerald trade in Smaragdinsel crashes. Most of the colony blames the hotheadedness of Wilhelm II.

1916 - Smaragdinsel declares it's official independence from the German Empire. Wilhelm II ignores this due to the war. Gottlob Isaak, at the age of 76, is declared the new Kaiser of the island, thus giving birth to the House of Isaak. The former summer home of the German Kaisers becomes the Isaak Palace, or Isaakplast. In a powerful speech, Gottlob officially changed the name of Frederickhafen to Isaakshafen. The Constitution of Smaragdinsel would be released on December 5th, 1916. The emerald trade slowly rejuvenates itself because of trade with the Entente and the United States.

1918 - The German Empire falls, resulting in the subsequent fall of the House of Hohenzollern.

1925 - Whilst Germany is extremely unstable, Smaragdinsel thrives. They get a new flag, adopting the Prussian black and white, however using a snake as it's symbol. This is still the flag today. Previously, the flag was a quadcolor vertical flag with the House of Hohenzollern coat of arms in the center.

1926 - Gottlob Isaak dies at the age of 86 in Isaakplast. On his death bed, he declares his eldest son, Alois Isaak, to be the new Kaiser.

1933 - Alois publicly shames the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany. As quoted, "The moustached man will only bring hell to this land of instability."

1936 - With the economic rise of Germany, some Smaragdins believe in returning to the control of Germany. A huge anti-Semitic view rises within Smaragdinsel.

1937 - Alois Isaak calls the rebels a sham, and no big deal. This sparks a revolution on the island of Gottlobinsel by Nazi supporters. Alois sends in the military, and the revolution is crushed. As said by military general Anton Roger, "The victory reflects that of Prussian military strength." This would be the only military conflict in the history of the nation.

1939 - With the outbreak of WW2, Alois Isaak publicly supports the Allies. The same year, Alois would die of a fatal heart attack, and his only child, Annett, would take over as Kaiserine at the age of 24. She is known as "Das Freihert", or The Liberty.

1945 - With the end of WW2, and news of the Holocaust, anti-Semitic views are pretty much gone in Smaragdinsel. Opposing political views also rise within the country, claiming that they never had a voice to be heard in the nation.

1950 - Using her royal power, on January 3rd, the Kaiserine declares the times are changing and the only way the country can be fairly ruled is through democracy. The Smaragdin Constitution is amended so much that only one article remained, the article that stated the Kaiser of the nation would be from the House of Isaak. Parties quickly emerge. Thus, Smaragdinsel became a constitutional monarchy, with elections every 4 years. The first Prime Minister of Smaragdinsel, in a close victory, is Augustin Barnabas.

The rest of history is fairly mundane... more detail coming soon within it's own factbook.

Economy

The primary business for Smaragdinsel is obviously emerald. There is also a considerable market for lapis lazuli, diamond, peridot, amethysts, etc. Gemstones are very abundant on the island.

Smaragdinsel does lack in natural resources, with the most on the island being small coal deposits. This is what is primarily imported.

Food sources are not a major issue, however, most of the major food industries in Smaragdinsel are imported because of their lack of convenience food industries in the nation.

Military

The Smaragdin army has only seen one minor conflict in it's entirety. For these reasons, a small, minor, defensive force is kept and a very small budget is provided to the military. The main focus for the military is the Royal Smaragdin Navy.

Culture

Smaragdin culture is heavily German, for obvious reasons. The majority of the population is Caucasian. The majority religion would be Lutheran Protestants. Yes, I know if you're reading this, you find it somewhat repetitive, but I promise you, this is just a start. The ratio of men to women is 57:43.

Smaragdin architecture is heavily Romanesque, such as that of Germany. The most recognizable building in Smaragdinsel is that of the Isaakplast, the royal home of the House of Isaak. During the 1950's, Smaragdin architecture saw a lot of modernization. One of the results of this was the huge, overwhelming "Der Jugendturm", a skyscraper with various industries in the city of Albertstadt.
