Darkipedia (DARK-i-PEE-dee-a or DARK-ee-PEE-dee-a) is a free and chocolatey encyclopedia operated by volunteers in The West Pacific with the aim to unify the disparate factbook articles of the various West Pacifican nations. The Darkipedia Index was founded in NS 11 and was named after Darkesia, former Delegate and Chocolatey Goddess of TWP. At the project's start there was interest and activity, with roughly eight nations submitting their factbooks to be included. Over time, however, some of the founding nations had retired or left the region, and interest in the project waned. However, even as nations left, others came to replace them, and in NS 16 a revitalization initiative was started. Today, Darkipedia includes the factbooks of nine nations, with many more on the way.

What is Darkipedia?

Darkipedia is an index of factbooks from the various nations of The West Pacific. It is used to guide readers from one factbook to the next, so that all factbooks may experience increased viewership. Darkipedia also has strong ties to roleplay in The West Pacific through the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

What is a factbook?

A factbook is a structured collection of facts that represents an overview of your nation and which is illustrated by photographs, graphs, tables, and other information.

Why have a factbook?

Everyone has a different set of reasons for writing a factbook but, in essence, there are two main ones. First, but least common, they are written to satisfy a player's inner craving to be self-fulfilled as an author or worldbuilder, or to be recognized by the NS world at large by describing their nation in as much detail as they can in terms of its history, geography, culture, etc. It also gives an opportunity to showcase your nation and let everyone know how good you are at writing an interesting and succinct piece of literature whilst using BBcode!

Second, and perhaps more likely, is the opportunity to enhance role play opportunities which can be achieved by:

  • Getting involved in TWP regional role play and map.

  • Reading another player's factbook to look for creativity and variety which may give an insight into whether you might wish to roleplay with, or against, another player.

  • Checking on facts about your nation before you start a new roleplay to make sure your "story" is correct and up to date with your latest changes.

  • Keeping the complete story of your nation in one place which you can add to at any time as you develop your nation and enhance your playing style. This is particularly useful if you are posting on IC RP forums such as: F&NI, NS, GE&T, and NS Sports.

  • Acting as a brochure for you and your nation to encourage other players to contact you for role play opportunities.

How do I join Darkipedia?

To join Darkipedia, you can send the caretakers, Mediobogdum and Fujai, a telegram which includes your nation name and a link to your factbook. All factbooks must be located on NationStates. No links to external facbooks will be allowed. Your factbook dispatch should, ideally, be a complete, single item rather than a collection of many dispatches which, if combined, would make a factbook.

Are there any rules?

To be admitted to the Darkipedia Index, your factbook must be of a high standard of quality. If you have any general questions about writing factbooks, you can send a telegram to the caretakers, Mediobogdum and Fujai. Alternatively, you can take a look at the Linkfactbook area on the TWP forums or the Factbook Question and Answer Thread in the NS forums.

Here is a list of all BBCodes that can be used on NS.

We suggest that Darkipedia factbooks include the Darkipedia banners and Darkipedia style sidebar as displayed on this dispatch. We encourage the use of a wiki style factbook as well, as they have a more cohesive look, but there is no reason you can't use a different one, such as the FWA style. More information about styles can be found below.

Should you choose, the Darkipedia banners go at the top and bottom of Darkipedia factbook, so that it is instantly recognizable by the average viewer. The top banner can include subtext, such as directions to a disambiguation or other commonly confused article, but this is not required (this is only for looks, there is no need to create a separate disambiguation page, unless you want to). The bottom banner cannot include any other text. The code for the banners and optional subtext is in the spoilers below. Simply copy and paste the code into your factbook, fill in the article name, and voilą!

A Darkipedia style sidebar is almost identical to a normal sidebar, but with some customizations. It is important to note that, to keep the integrity of the sidebar, you cannot use any image larger than 300 pixels wide. If you want to include a larger image, you can either resize it yourself, look online for an image resizer, or ask Fujai to resize it for you. The code here includes the correct formatting, although information can be in any order as long as images are located at the top. We do not recommend using colors for your headers, as they may not show up if someone is using the NS dark theme.

FWA style factbook

Factbooks don't have to be difficult! The simplest and easiest style of factbook is that promoted by the Factbook Writer's Association (FWA). A guide to this style is located here. It is a much simplified version of the wiki style and contains just the basics of a factbook with sections on, but not limited to, these three facets of your nation:

  • Map

  • Resources

  • Government

This approach gives nations with less knowledge of BBCode or worldbuilding an great start in role play without too much effort. Mediobogdum's factbook is an excellent detailed example of this style.

Wiki style factbook

The "gold star" finished article is that of the wiki style factbook, and the factbooks of Hariko, Little Sealand, and Zogradia are in this category. The premium guide to wiki style factbooks is Ponderosa's Guide to a Wiki Style Factbook, which includes a guide and template that is fully endorsed by Darkipedia. Recommended items to include are, but are not limited to:

  • Nation name and pre-title

  • Flag

  • Motto

  • Anthem Title

  • Map or orthographic of your region

  • History

  • Geography

  • Capital and Largest Cities with Populations

  • Demonym

  • Government (e.g., national leader, legislature, etc)

  • Religions

  • Currency

  • Statistics (land area, water percentage, etc)

  • GDP and economic information

Factbook tips and tricks

Here are some tips while working on your factbook:

  • Quality pictures and graphics add much interest and enjoyment to the presentation.

  • Carry out a spell check before submission.

  • Save your work regularly as you compile your factbook.

  • Use good grammar, if English is not your first language, don't worry, you can always ask for some help in the LinkTWP forums.

  • This dispatch contains a complete list of all BBCodes that can be used on NS.
