“Would I rather be feared or loved? Easy, both. I want people to be afraid of how much they love their Big Brother.”
- Supreme Leader of the United States of The English Socialist Union of Oceania, Eric Oswald Hastings

Eric Oswald Hastings is an English Socialist revolutionary, demagogue, and politician of English nationality. The founder of the English Socialist Party, Hastings remained at the top of the ranks in the party in popularity before, during, and after The Revolution. In 1954, Hastings was unanimously appointed by the Political Bureau of the English Socialist Union of Oceania to the position of President of The United States of The English Socialist Union of Oceania; serving as the head of state over Oceania. He then changed his title to Supreme Leader of the United States of the English Socialist Union of Oceania.

Born and raised in a middle-class family in Birmingham, England, Hastings pursued his career to become a lawyer and a political philosopher in the capital city of London. After the country was struck by ballistic nuclear missiles multiple times in World War III, Hastings helped found the English Socialist Party along with Emmanuel Goldstein and many other English Socialist revolutionaries. Inciting virulent nationalism and revolt against the British government among the dissenting populace, English Socialist supporters engaged British government forces and the British Army in The Revolution.

After seizing total power and control over the United States of The English Socialist Union of Oceania in 1954, Hastings eliminated the Party’s members in the Purge, with Emmanuel Goldstein going into hiding, and established a totalitarian one-party regime comprised entirely of followers loyal to him and an extreme cult of personality that surrounded him as the Supreme Leader of the United States of the English Socialist Union of Oceania. His leadership saw crackdowns on political movements opposing his regime and policies; the decreasing standard of living throughout Oceania; the stagnant economic progress of his Three Year plans; division in social class between the Inner Party, the bureaucratic and educated Outer Party, and the poor and uneducated Proles; constant state surveillance on the people of Oceania; and the perpetual war with the superpowers of the world.

In order to keep the impoverished and uneducated populace in line and obedient, Hastings and the Party kept the standard of living throughout the superstate very low; distract the people with stale entertainment and propaganda; establish the Two Minutes Hate and Hate Week events for the Proles and Outer Party to channel their aggression against the superstates of Eurasia or Eastasia; and to continuously re-edit the headlines and historical records to meet the requirements of the Party.
