Imperial Army Tagmata Units

The tagmata are the elite "core" of the modern Imperial military, referring to military formations that directly serve the Crown itself, whether it be in a secular, mercenary, or sometimes religious manner. While potentially rivaled in strength or skill by and certainly outnumbered by the various thematic armies from around the Imperium, what makes them valued by the Imperium is their reliability. Unlike the various thematic armies, tagmatic Imperial troops are far more loyal to the national Imperial government due to being directly paid and linked to the Imperium, rather than through an intermediary like thematic or "souhei" armies. However, taghmatic forces lack relatively large amounts of numbers due to recruiting standards and budget restrictions, and unlike souhei, mercenaries, or even thematic forces, are hard for the Imperium to deny a relationship to when they need to be more... underhoofed... in their dealings.

Note: Anthropoids deliberately excludes the kobito or "inchlings" due to their mismatch in scale in comparison to the rest of the Imperium, though rumors persist of some special operations force designed for dealing with incidents that happen on their scale.
