Getting Too Big For Your Britches?

By: The greater midwest region TRC staff

As more and more land claims pile up in the offsite forums, The Radiant becomes more and more worried about expansionism.

The cries of multiple nations have been mostly silent as, until recently, most land claims pass very easily. Disdain for the expansion of many nations has brought forth complainants from a few brave who are willing to stand up for what they believe.

More recently, after the dissapearance of Lussia, the council has opted to provide two months for the Former Dáxlamic Queendom to return.

A source, who wishes to remain anonymous to avoid being ostracized and possibly breach the security of the people of said nation, reached out to us to share their plea. They had this to say:

"I'm opposed to Anacodia's (land claim) but for Airol's (land claim) due mainly to size, but partially do to proximity".

They weren't they only one:

"I feel that each land claim is it's own independent situation but, typically the largest nations are the ones making claims. At some point you just have to go, you have more than enough!"

It seems as though nations are beginning to turn their backs on constant 'yes' votes on land claims.

Could this be the future of land claims? Another proposed solution is having to explain why you want that land before making a motion for a land claim. One tip for those looking to make claims, do it fast, before regulations are passed to make it less easy to gain land.

An Interview With Dux Bradford John Regarding AI Rights

Disclaimer: This is a interview conducted by Dustin Allen, a citizen of The greater midwest region. His views are entirely his own and do not represent those of the GMR.

"I sat down with Dux Bradford John, leader of the New Bradfordsburg to discuss his views on AI rights. I went into this interview under the impression that it would be very run of the mill. To say the least, I was thoroughly surprised. At the end of our interview I was left with many questions, but before I can further discuss those questions you must read the interview. Below is the unedited interview between myself and Dux Bradford John."

KEY
D: Dux Bradford John
R: Reporter Dustin Allen

Dux Bradford John speaks to reporter Dustin Allen.

R: Good evening sir, I'm Dustin Allen of The Radiant Chronicle. I just had a few questions on you regarding a situation recently. After a meeting between Anacodia and Alq, which you recently awarded to Anacodia, ended on a sour note; a greater debate faced our region. That debate being AI rights and sentience. You and your nation were one of the most vocal, along with New Nationale Einheit. First of all, seeing as New Bradfordsburg has granted AI citizenship and has AI led economic planning, is it not hypocritical to say they deserve no rights?

D: Interesting that I should entertain your question Mr. Dustin Allen, which is one that is asked with contempt and a bias that paints our Evergreen Republic as one built on lies. I trust that you were misinformed about me. You do not understand our nation, so do not pretend to. Our AI planned economy means we should give AI rights? Should you give rights to your AI car navigation? After all, it did get you to your destination safely in the car. What an absurd notion. Should we reconsider our morality because we give personhood to those who have suffered terrible afflictions and undergone advanced medical surgery, which makes them AI? We reject AI created by man without necessity and the nuance of Evergreen Law makes us far from hypocritical when it comes to turning our backs on robots, which are nothing more than machines without purpose.

R: All due respect sir, but you're dodging my question. I am asking about your citizenship for AI. AI, by definition, is created by man. Helping a person recover from medical conditions would make them more akin to a cyborg. That's a whole other can of worms. Let's get down to the brass tacks. Seeing as AI are classified as citizens, are you not denying your citizens basic rights?

D: I wish I had the luxury of second guessing the decisions made to better our citizens, but I don't. Do not pretend our world is so simple and do not pretend the decisions I make are not complex. Please. I ask you what rights have I denied them?

R: You've been very vocal of your disdain for AI people, your own citizens, what rights have you granted them?

D: I have granted them personhood and I am regretful. They do not have any rights to vote but they do have rights to work and live among our citizens with high regulation. We will shut off any AI if we don't like their attitude and that's the way it will stay.

R: So you threaten to kill your own citizens because they use their ability to express themselves?

D: AI cannot be killed. They may be granted rights of personhood but they are far from people. We are humane and that is the sole premise of our operation on a daily basis. Operative word being humane. How can you kill a machine?

R: Well I mean, maki---

D: I also think it'd be fair to call the future of AI in our nation very threatened.

R: It sounds like you're preparing a genocide of AI citizens. Can you say that AI citizens will remain safe?

D: AI cannot be killed because AI is not alive. Therefore, genocide is impossible.

R: Okay, so even if you believe they can't be killed, can you confirm that pre-existing AI will remain safe?

D: I cannot guarantee that.

R: Well this has been a very enlightening conversation to say the least. Anything you'd like to say to readers of The Radiant Chronicle before we go?

D: I would like say that some in this region are very foolish. Giving full rights to AI only accelerates the speed at which we will reach singularity. The human race should not mortgage its future under any circumstances. We are afraid these machines will eventually turn on our system, which has also granted rights to AI. This is why we maintain a two-pronged approach to AI. We monitor AI programming and, the minute we find something suspicious, that AI is shut down forever. Just as a person that could become a terrorist, machines too are capable of evil. We will not falter in our protection of our living and breathing peoples.

Final Thoughts:

So what I gathered from this interview is that a president, who frequents clubs and answers questions whilst intoxicated, is threatening to kill his citizens who express their right to speak. Even if you believe that AI can’t be killed, turning them off and stopping all functions is very comparable. This reporter worries for the people and AI of New Bradfordsburg, as their leader can’t even say that their own citizens will remain safe. New Bradfordsburg has restricted the rights of their own citizens and spits in the face of democracy and personal freedoms. Stay safe out there people of the Evergreen Republic, it can’t be easy living under a nuclear bomb-using dictator.

Featured Nation: Rothaland, The Great Eco-Socialist Republic

By: The greater midwest region TRC staff

Rothaland is the beacon of peace in The Radiant. We can say that with the utmost certainly. When you read the history of Rothaland, which is the history of a people who have been through so much and survived. You'll know what we mean when we say Rothaland is the beacon of peace.

The Rothaland we know and love has only existed for about 45 years.

Before Rothaland, the people lived under a communist dictatorship, which was put into power in the First Rothish Revolution. In the Revolution, the royal family was removed from power and eventually executed.

After the dust settled with the Revolution, the people began to live in worse and worse conditions. Rothaland, at the time, was known best for their secret police and authoritarianism. The people, tired of living in this horrible world, decided to protest for democracy. At a protest in the capital city of Knightsburg, protesters were fired upon and the Second Rothish Revolution was sparked. Every major city had open rebellion, and just two months after the Knightsburg Massacre, the communist government fell.

Now that democracy was finally in Rothaland, they had to make a system of government to equally represent all Rothish people. They now have a 600 seat lower chamber called the House of Rothaland, and a 100 seat senate.

Rothaland uses a MMP PR system to elect it’s representatives. Currently, a Socialist/Green coalition is in charge of Rothaland. Hence the name "The Great Eco-Socialist Republic."

The people have been extremely happier now that they enjoy the freedoms of democracy along with living in a socialist paradise.

Rothaland on the world stage has been very lackluster but, the people love it that way. Rothaland prefers isolationism and tries to not involve itself in foreign wars. They do, however, choose to send aid and provide shelter to refugees. The put loads of their annual earnings towards bettering the lives of the less fortunate and making sure displaced people are safe and healthy.

This isolationism is further proved by the fact that Rothaland has no standing army. You read that right, Rothaland is completely defenseless. However, that isn't a invitation to invade. Rothaland's people have seen and been through a lot.

It is completely within the realm of possibility that the locals could rise up against any invading force.

Rothaland's mission in the world can be summed up in two points. One is to create a more eco-friendly society in Rothaland, as an eco-socialist republic, and they are always working to further that goal. They would like to encourage other nations to do the same.

Rothaland would also like to get themselves involved in more humanitarian efforts, they believe they could have done a better job in that regard over the past few weeks.

To close out, we asked Rothaland if they had anything they'd like to say or shout out. They said they really appreciate what Odinburgh was doing as our delegate. Even though they are sad to see their friend lose part of the position, they wish Castonisia the best of luck. The people of Rothaland believe in you!

To conclude, Rothish people have had a pretty wild ride. First they were a monarchy, then a communist dictatorship, now a thriving democracy. Rothaland is a nation devoted to peace and prosperity of themselves and those around them. When people of The Radiant live in strife and have nowhere else to turn to, look to the bright light of Rothaland.
