Introduction
The DSA has an active Role-Play ministry that allows any and all DSA members to participate. Role-Play includes regional maps, sports events, regional government role-play, and much more.
Want some tips on how to get involved in DSA Role-Play? We have a dispatch for ya.
You want to learn how best to get into the role-play community of the DSA? That makes me excited since it is my job to get people to do that. This dispatch will tell you some things you should know as well as some tips that you can follow (or not. No one is making you follow these. They're just tips)
When I (Student Loan Debt) first joined the DSA, I thought I had to be very formal and act serious in what I said. However, I soon learned that we're just a bunch of political science nerds who are playing a game. You don't have to be afraid of messing up or being ejected from our region or anything. Most of us are just casual players. Some of our nations are pretty much just memes if they were given political power. We are a pretty relaxed region, so enjoy the fun. If anything bad happens, we're pretty nice about it.
The DSA Role-Play community is a community, meaning more than one person is participating in role-play. This means that, sometimes, your role-play will not go how you want it to go and, sometimes, there will be backlash from other players. When you are doing role-play with other players, you should try and remember that you're not the only one in charge of what is happening. If people are reacting badly to your RP, whether in-character or not, that's just that. With that in mind, don't get frustrated by people not going along with your RP. When you do international RP, you're inviting other opinions and actions.
Also to note: Our RP is consent-based. If you're publishing RP of your own nation and characters, this doesn't matter. However, if you're interacting with other nations or characters that you do not control (aka another player controls them), then it has to be RP you both agree on. Like if you wanted to do a military invasion of another player's nation, both you and that player have to agree to that RP happening (but your nations don't need to ;) ). This helps reduce stress and tension between players that may not want to have RP forced onto them.
Now for the Tips.
When you joined the game, you created a country. However, a country is not a nation. A nation is an identity, a culture, a unity, a unique society. Don't just have a country, have your own place. What would I mean by this?
Have a flag that means something to your people.
What is your nation's history?
Are your people nomadic or do they settle?
How urban are your people versus rural?
Why is your national animal so special?
Create an economy; what is your money? How do people trade, if at all? Does industry dominate or is agriculture essential? How do your people address poverty?
Create a culture for your peoples; What languages are spoken? What religious beliefs are held? How prude or liberal are they with personal freedoms? How patriotic or global are your people? Are there any holidays?
These are only a few examples of ways to develop your nation's identity.
Like many Regions in the game of NationStates, our region has a map of the land we operate in. Now, I may be bias with this one since I'm in charge of our maps, but here my out on this!
Most of the DSA Role-Play community has a spot on our regional maps, largely because it greatly helps in developing role-play. You can have defined borders to your country. You can explore the climate of your land. You can sails the seas that line your coast. You can trade with neighboring countries. The possibilities are limitless.
You just have to do 1 thing before that. To be on our maps, you have to join our off-site forum and that's it. The forum helps us try and make sure people are not getting around our map rules and all that jazz.
Forum: http://thedsa.proboards.com/
Did that? Great! Now you can be on our maps! You Can Click Here To See The Maps and Learn How To Join The Map
This one is not required, but it is recommended. The most active Role-Players in the DSA are on our Discord server, where a lot of role-play, discussion about RP, and RP art is posted.
This is a question that many have when trying to join Role-Play here in the DSA. There are many ways you can approach this. It all starts with how you want to do it. You can role-play as a newspaper from a neutral point of view (unless the newspaper is deliberately biased), role-play as a person or group making a statement or doing an action, or role-play as your nation's government having official policy and words and stuff.
What can I role-play about? I have no ideas. Well, here are only a few ideas.
Put up a news article discussing an event in your nation
Send an official statement or request from your government to another
Talk about a controversial law that was passed in your country
Explain a new military program
Make some other interesting story that will get others engaged and allow for some interactivity between nations
Try writing from the point of view of a citizen, rather than always from the government
Do you want to join in on an RP event that is going on? That's as simple as starting one.
One word: REACT
Look at what's been going on, figure out what your country would do in this situation, and react to it. Let's say two countries are bickering over trade or something. You could take a side, you could interject with your own trade issues, you could send a muffin basket to both sides, laced with cyanide, whatever.
You can literally just jump in like you always existed. You can just make a post and you can easily integrate into our RP world and we won’t question it. Seems unrealistic, but that’s how a constantly growing and contracting RP community works.
And that is pretty much it. This is only to help you first get into Role-Play. There are so many routes you can take and so many stories to tell that I can't list them here. Hope you join the international community soon.
DSA Base RP Rules
Rules for Roleplay
Disputes
• MoRP and Aides have final say. If you wish to dispute something, do not do it in the midst of the RP. TG’s, Discord or the forum are more appropriate.
Technology
• If you wish to have some more advanced technology in your RP, we have a soft limit (as in "don't go right up to the limit") of allowing tech up to what is predicted to be possible by 2150 A.D. IRL in advancement. It’s enough to allow you to be the sci-fi utopia you want and low enough to prevent stuff like dyson spheres. Most nations are somewhere between modern and near-future (within about 15 years) leveled in technology.
• Due to advancements in RL A.I. and that there are issues of civil rights and citizenship in official NationStates Issues, sapient A.I. citizens are allowed.
Fantasy
• We allow some low fantasy elements in our RP. Keep in mind, however, that this is low fantasy, not high. Don’t get super fantastical. Yeah a little weirdness is fine, but don’t go all fantastical like fireballs, dragons, your crush liking you back, and things you know are generally considered pretty far out there in the realm of fantasy
More Complex RP
• Nations engaging in RP beyond occasional comments should have their basic government details available in a factbook. If it doesn’t, the nation’s rankings will be used as approximate details.
Consent
• Our RP is consent-based. If you're publishing RP of your own nation and characters, this doesn't matter. However, if you're interacting with other nations or characters that you do not control (if another player controls them), then it has to be RP you both agree on. Like if you wanted to do a military invasion of another player's nation, both you and that player have to agree to that RP happening (but your nations don't need to ;) ). This helps reduce stress and tension between players that may not want to have RP forced onto them.
Discord Is Great For Role-Play
If you do not know what Discord is, it is a free voice, video and instant text chat app that can be accessed on your computer or phone. Many nations in the region use Discord to communicate, share articles and memes they like, and sometimes have voice chats. A lot of role-play has also been occurring in our Discord through specific channels designated for role-play and RP events. If you'd like to get in on all of this,Click Here To Join Our Regional Discord
The Delusia Factbook provides basic intelligence on the history, people, government, economy, energy, geography, environment, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues for major world entities. It's basically our version of wikipedia. You can add in your own information and join it. Fill out one of the forms about it here and it'll be added soon enough. Then, you can read all about what there is below

The Democratic Socialist Assembly has an active scene and rich history in map creation and development. Currently, the DSA has over 19 different maps, from political and population maps to climate and time zone maps. For full detail on our maps and the ability to be on our maps, read our Map Dispatch to learn all about it. The Dispatch is where all our maps are stored as well as an archive of all of our past maps going as far back as 2011.
The maps of the Democratic Socialist Assembly are opt-in maps that allow nations to have defined borders and enhance their role-playing (if they chose to do so. No one is making them). To have a spot on our maps, Every 15 days (half months), all official DSA maps are updated to reflect current stats and regional membership. |

Real Life Examples: Canada, Alaksa, Siberia
• Polar Tundra - Cold and Low Precipitation summers and Very Cold Dry winters. Permafrost, no trees, has srubs, grasses, mosses, and lichens, low biodiversity, and seasonal bogs and lakes
Real Life Examples: Nunavut, Greenland coast
• Polar Ice Caps - Low Precipitation summers, Dry winters, and Very Cold year round. Permanent snow and ice cover and almost no plants at all.
Real Life Examples: Antarctica, Greenland Interior
• Highland/Alpine - Depends on elevation. Precipitation depends on surrounding climate and wind patterns (If the base of the mountain is dry, expect that side to be dry. If base is wet, expect it to be wet). Cold resistant plants like perinnials, , sedges, mosses, and lichen, and there will be a tree line where, once you are high enough, trees cannot survive and will not grow. Where this line is depends on temperature and latitude, with the line decreasing in height the closer you get to the Poles.
Real Life Examples: Himalayas, Andes, other mountainous areas
Topography and Bathymetry (Elevation) Map: A map showing the elevation of the land and oceans
Geographic Map: A map showing what our plant generally looks like on a satellite. Includes names for many major areas, climates, and mountains of our world.
Ocean Currents Map: A map showing the ocean currents of the world and their temperature.
Blue= colder water and drier air heading towards the equator. These areas are nutrient rich and act as fishing hot spots.
Red= warmer water and wetter air heading towards the poles. In tropical waters, these are where coral reefs and coconut palm trees can be found.
Black= no significant temperature change
Bodies of Water Map: A map showing the names of major bodies of water and location of rivers The Lakes, Seas, and Oceans are named after those who have contributed great amount of work and time to the DSA. The bigger their contribution, the bigger amount of water they get. The Ocean of Solidarity is not a player, however, but a major ocean from the previous map. The Rivers, however, can be named anything. This is left up to the nation who has said river flowing in their lands
Wind Patterns Map: A map showing the prevailing winds of the world, including the ITCZ, Subtropical Ridge, and Polar Front.
Time Zone Map: A map showing what time it is in different places around the world
Continental Map: A map showing the continents, subcontinents, and regions of the world

Extreme Weather: A map showing where can can expect extreme meteorological (weather) events
Map of Seasons: A map showing what season each part of the world is in. These are the current seasons for the months of December to February
Wet Season - The time of year when most of a region's average annual rainfall occurs
Dry Season - The time of year with little rainfall and little humidity
Middle Latitudes
Spring - Days and nights are around 12 hours long each with day length increasing and night length decreasing as the season progresses. Temperatures are increasing, snow melts and creates run-off, and plants begin to bloom. Storms are not uncommon.
Summer - Days are longer than nights with day length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice. Temperatures are high, plants are in full bloom, and hurricanes/cyclones can occur.
Autumn - Days and nights are around 12 hours long each with night length increasing and day length decreasing as the season progresses. Temperatures are decreasing, deciduous trees start shedding their leaves, and the harvesting of crops are at their highest.
Winter - Nights are longer than days with night length decreasing as the season progresses after the solstice. Temperatures are low, most plants have died, animals are migrating and hibernating, water freezes, and humid areas receive snow.

Winter/Polar Night - When the polar region is facing away from the sun and the night lasts for more than 24 hours. For specifics on how long it lasts, consult the Civil Twilight Map below, but in reverse instead of it measuring twilight, it measures midnight).
Civil Twilight Map: A map showing where on the planet Civil Twilight (when the sun is 6 degrees below the horizon) occurs and for how long. Aka places where it stays sunset for a long time.
Aurora Map: A map showing where on the planet one can expect to see auroras
Coordinate Map: A map showing the latitudes and longitudes of the world
Trick Or Treat: In the spirit of the Halloween season, the Democratic Socialist Homeowners Association has provided a map of the neighborhood (I turned the DSA political map into a neighborhood map). This is the map as of October 31st, 2023
How to Get on the Map
Every nation that moves to the DSA has the opportunity to be added to the map upon request. The map system is designed to reward and encourage active participation and longevity with more flexibility on the map, meaning nations that remain inactive in terms of RP will likely not get everything they like in their requests.
Map Criteria/ Requirements To Be On The Map
To join the map
Be a resident of the DSA
Have an account on our off-site forum
To stay on the map
Post any kind of In-Character role play at least once a month and somewhere reasonably accessible/public
Specifics about the activity requirement
It should be In-Character, aka in-universe. Could be from someone's perspective, a news report, organization postings, a tweet, etc. The Ministry of Role Play promotes in-universe narratives over top-down worldbuilding (especially since NS easily provides one for you). However, if you only do top-down worldbuilding, we allow it to meet the requirement if it is at least two paragraphs of content.
Can be any length. Can be as short as a tweet or as long as a novel. Pretty easy metric.
If you're about to be removed for inactivity, I'll try and give you a one-week heads up about that. If it happens a 2nd time relatively soon after, I'll give you another heads up. A third time, though? I won't tell you cause you've already been told twice. Gotta start remembering yourself.
If you're removed for inactivity, you won't be able to reapply to the map for the following 15 days.
Opt-In Here
You can either let the DoC pick where your nation will be (they base it on you Factbook, your national animal, anything and everything to try and get a good location) or you can upload an image of where you'd like to be.
By opting-in to our maps, you here by agree to all terms and conditions listed in this dispatch
Expansion
If you would like to request a larger size (an expansion), please telegram the DoC with your new request. If they approve, you will need to opt-in to the map once again so the expansion can be properly documented. Your first expansion is free, however all following expansions will require that you be active in RP as expansions are rewards. What is considered "active" would be a significant amount of RP within a certain time frame prior to the expansion request.
Also, No Long Chile, which means no hogging a continent's coastline. You can start and expand to and along the coast line, but I will not let you take up a significantly large portion of the coast with no inward expansion.Unless you're blocked by a mountain, be cautious only expanding along the coast.
Lastly, we do limit how large nations can be. The limit was larger in the past but had to be reduced so new players could still have desirable locations. The current limit is 500,000 pixels on the map, or 4,961,250 square miles/12,852,450 square km) (smaller than Antarctica)
What Else Can Be Requested? What is Restricted?
Size of Your Nation
You may request a specific size for your nation so long as it is below the requirements listed above. You may request a specific location, access to water, landlocked status, etc. so long as it is within reason.
You're not going to start big. You're gonna be a normal starting size.
Click Here To See Some Examples
Realistically, your nation isn't going to start out the size of Russia. What nation ever has?Capital City and Major Cities
You can request I add a city of yours to the map. Just don't do too many, just the biggest ones.No Puppets...Kind Of
Residents may only have 1 NS account tied to the map. However, if you want to have multiple nations on the map, you can request I indicate some of your land to be recognized as another country. I'll include a little indicator underneath the nation name that it belongs to you and you can name the country whatever you like.Border-Gore
Please don't do any. While you can do some (with my permission), perhaps keep it more internal and not be your national border. I consider it cheating the expansion system because it deters anyone from being near you, effectively making surrounding territory yours and that's not fair. I also count Portuguese colonization (tiny trade post claims everywhere) to count because it has the same effects.Relocating/Moving Your Nation
First off, please don't. Extremely rarely would an IRL nation entirely relocate their whole nation. Capitals change, yes, but not an entire country. If you're going to relocate, at least put effort into it and write up some good RP explaining the relocation (and preferably more than just "My people don't like it here anymore" or "Oops, we just nuked the area, gotta go". Nah, that's lazy and you know it.But if that's too much, then opt-out of the map and be off for a month before getting back on.
These next two don't really relate to the above, but are informational none the less
Distance
Our world is 25200 miles (or 40555 km) in circumference. The map is 8000 pixels long. This means that each pixel on the map represents around 3.15 miles (5.07 km). The hypotenuse of each pixel is around 4.45 miles (7.12 km).International Waters
International waters start 12 nautical miles off the coast of a claimed territory. If you are using one of our 8000 pixels long maps, that starts 4 pixels horizontally/vertically away from you nation. Other directions depend on your angle.
The cartographers reserve the right to refuse to add or to edit any nation or feature on the regional map. They are a God with unlimited cartography power!
Removal from the Map
There are a few ways a nation might be removed from the map.
1) It ceases-to-exist (CTEs, that is when a nation doesn't log in for 28 days and their nation is deleted); OR
2) It departs the DSA for another region; OR
3) It requests removal; OR
4) They don't fulfill the activity requirementA nation that has been removed from the map and wishes to be on the map again is treated as a new arrival and must opt-in to the map once again in order to be on there.
What if I accidentally leave the region?
It happens. If you accidentally leave and come right back, you don't lose your spot. Although if you're gone for, like, more than a day then yeah you lose your spotWhat if I CTE but refound really quickly?
You still lose your spot. Your map spot is directly tied to having an NS account and, just like we consider CTEing to be resignation from the DSA Congress, we also consider it resignation from the map.
In addition, you had an entire month (or two if you put your nation in vacation mode in the settings). A log-in to NS takes less than 30 seconds and you'd only have to do it once a month (or two months). It's a very easy requirement to meet.
To get back on the map, you will need to opt-in again and will start at starting-size, which means expansions need to be earned back. What if if I was REALLY active?
We make an exception for that. For players who have been actively engaged in DSA RP for a long while and have expanded borders, if they CTE and come back and opt-in before the next map update, they will get their full borders back. If they wait until after the map update, they can only get half their borders. If they wait until the 2nd map update after, though? Doesn't count. That's a full reset.

DSA Capital
The DSA Capital is the diplomatic center of the world. Here are some maps of the place
The DSA Capital is the diplomatic center of Delusia, the planet that the Democratic Socialist Assembly's role-play takes place on. Once a combination of Out of Character and In Character elements to symbolize the region's heart, the RP community has severed the DSA Capital from the region's OOC aspects and is now completely IC
The DSA Capital is a vibrant nation home to all sorts of peoples from around the world. For players who wish to have diplomatic events occur here, any player can have an embassy from their nation already established in the Capital City.
.
This one is not too detailed mainly to give the players more creative freedom with what they do on the island. You can have a shop anywhere in the city if the streets aren't mapped.
St. Ruselia's Lighthouse
The lighthouse is built upon a small rocky island that is home to the infamous Wreck of the St. Ruselia, a passenger ship that carried immigrants heading to the DSA Capital. After the wreck, the lighthouse was built to prevent more wreckage. It is said that, on foggy and dark nights, one can see the St. Ruselia sailing the murky waters. Some have reported seeing people at the top of the lighthouse, only to find no one there when they climb up.
La Sagezza University
Before the founding of the DSA Capital, La Sagezza University was La Sagezza Castle, owned by Count Kotovania. During the Plague Riots of 1643, he was hanged by a mob of angry peasants. Years later, when the castle became a monastery, monks and visitors reported sightings of a well dressed man wandering the halls, sometimes with a very visibly broken neck. Today, students, teachers, and faculty report sightings of a man wandering school grounds. Perhaps Count Kotovania still seeks to rule his manor.
Riasy Pond
Most know this pond for it's swans and glitter in the sunset. However, some know it for it's supposed sightings of a little girl that wonders at night. A young girl was reported as drowning in the pond in 1921, and some suspect that her ghost still lingers, playing in the pond and calling for others to play with her.
Arcomo Hospital
The oldest hospital on the island, the building served as the resting place for many who have died in it's walls, and continues to be their resting place today. Sounds of patients in agony can be heard from rooms that have no one in them. Reports of patients wondering the basement halls of the old wing of the hospital and suddenly disappearing.
23 West 15th Street
In 1873, this location was the home of Louise S. Yamerah, famous poet and humanitarian worker who was murdered in a home-invasion. The home, now a museum dedicate to her work, is said to still contain her spirit, whom some have reported seeing writing her poem that went unfinished the night she was murdered.
The Mettia Embassy Building
Despite the embassy building's current nation, the name of the Mettia Embassy remains popular. After the fall of the nation of Mettia in 1967, rumors say that one of the workers of the embassy, supposedly so heartbroken by the event, ended her life in the building. Current embassy workers and nationals entering the building sometimes hear the sound of crying in one location, then in another. While government workers deny any death occurring on the premises, some still believe her spirit weeps for her fallen nation.
The Black Line Tunnel
Back during the initial construction of the Capital's underground subway systems, one tunnel that was being constructed suddenly collapsed, killing 42 tunnel workers. The shutdown Green Line Tunnel, now nicknamed the "Black Line Tunnel", holds extra subway cars. However, many report seeing old workers wondering the tunnels, switching on lights, and opening subway car doors, trying to finish the rail line that will never be.
The Vernice House
Once owned by the Vernice family, this historic Kiptoke house apparently seems to have one member still living here. It’s suspected that Gwendoline Vernice, the last Vernice to occupy the house until her death in 1921, is keeping an eye on the home she grew up in. Since becoming a museum, strange sights, sounds, and smells have been reported. Yet the staff doesn’t seem fazed, as ghost tours are offered here frequently.
Pier 126
Once a pier for the trading and moving of slaves, this pier is stain with bad events. In the late 1630s and early 1640s, the pier served as a spot for hearse boats to carry off plague victims to the cemeteries that layed on the other shore. Now a pier that hosts shops, cafes, and restaurants, some report seeing ghostly figures walk the pier at night, some reporting seeing them walk into or across the water, heading to the northern shore.
Guertonia Bridge
The Guertonia Bridge is an iconic DSA landmark, known as “the most photographed bridge in the DSA”. What most people don’t know, however, is that the Guertonia Bridge and the surrounding area is haunted. The construction of the bridge resulted in a reported 9 deaths from falling into the waters below. The bridge is said to be haunted by those 9 workers. On dark and foggy nights, ghostly figures can be seen roaming the walkways.
The Red Vine Tavern
A popular bar for local performances and slam poetry sessions, this bar hosts not only up-and-coming writers, but also six-feet-under writers. The story goes that the 19th century writer Marquaes Brawnlee died in a bar fight after hitting on another man's wife, where he bled out on the stairs of the bar. It’s rumored that his ghost remains a patron at this establishment to this day, perhaps keeping tabs on his favorite table.
Corujea Hotel
This historic hotel is well-known for providing lodging to theater stars and cultural celebrities over the years. And according to believers, a few residents may have never checked out. In 1903,a man fell down a flight of stairs and broke his neck, with some reportedly seeing a shadowy figure in the stairwell. In 1964, a woman was found stabbed in a hotel room bathroom. The room is considered to be haunted and has become one of their most booked rooms, with a wait list of 7 months.

DSA Olympia Games
The DSA hosted our own form of the Olympic Games on June 21st, first day of (northern) summer, and lasted until June 24th. Many countries won medals, and many countries brought glory and pride to their people. Learn more about it by clicking below.
Link To DSA Olympia Games Offical Page
Hello Comrades, I want to have a DSA Olympics (oh wow, what an original idea! I bet no one has ever thought of that before! /s). The DSA Regional Olympia Games (DSAROG) is a new and upcoming international sports event intended to showcase the best athletes across the DSA.
The Olympia Games is intended to show unity and brotherhood among our nations. All DSA member nations may join the Olympia Games. The rules and format of the Olympia Games will be subject of debate and will ultimately be decided based on 1) What makes the most sense depending on how many teams we have, and 2) What people would like to see.
The regional contest will be held on June 21st, the first day of (northern) summer. That is about a month away. For the next week, multiple things will be required.
First off, I'd like you all to say what sports you'd like to see in our Olympia Games. The most supported sports will occur in our Olympia Games. Suggestions will last 2 weeks.
Second, we can't have an Olympia Games without a place to host it. Volunteer to host the Olympia Games in your nation (it'd just be RP, you wouldn't have to take on anything). The nations of the DSA would democratically elect the host nation/city for the games. The nation selected would select a city from their nation to host the games. Selection processes would be held before the actual games. You will have 4 days to volunteer and 4 days to vote for who you want to host the Olympia Games. To volunteer to host the Olympia Games, send me a telegram on NS or message on Discord. (it has been decided by a public vote that the First Olympia Games will be held in the city of Talenus in the country of Student Loan Debt)
TO SIGN UP FOR OLYMPIA GAMES:
Send me a telegram here on NS or a message on Discord letting me know you would like to join!
You will need a team name!
You will need a team roster! Rosters will consist of 5 players (so nations will only be part of 5 events for the Olympia Games)! All I need is the names of the players! Their skill/ability will be decided with a random number generator. Once the tournament starts the outcomes of the matches will be decided with a scorinator (Results based on the players' skill level with room to vary. Better skill level =/= guaranteed win. That'd be boring!)
If you would like to make more details on the players, that's fine! I can even include a nickname and link to a bio if you guys would like. As this is season 1, kinks will be likely to get taken care of. The main point of this is for us to have fun together and make the gameplay on here a little more fun.
You have until June 5th at 7PM UTC to sign up for the Olympia Games.
Sign-Ups are now available for what sports your teams will compete in. Space is limited, so make sure you sign up for what you want to compete in. Each team will compete in 5 games of their choice. You will have 1 week to sign up. Afterward, if you haven't signed up, I will put your team in a category myself.
There are currently 16 events you can compete in. You will enter the name of your team and the player that is competing.
(since this is a public post, I will be linking the "view only" link. If you need the link where you can edit, message me)
1st DSA Olympia Games Coleseum
We have also hosted Winter Olympia Games
Remember when we used to have the Summer Olympia Games? Yes? No? Well your answer doesn't matter because this is only related to it. The 2020 DSA Winter Olympia Games are commencing! Would you like to join? The Winter Olympia Games is intended to show unity and brotherhood among our nations. All DSA member nations, as well as members of Allied Regions, may join the Winter Olympia Games.
Signing-Up and Hosting
Sign-ups to be in the tournament will begin today (January 17th, 2020) and end in 8 days (January 25th, 2020). To sign-up, send me, Student Loan Debt, a telegram saying that you wish to enter. You also need to make a team roster (see Tournament Specifics below for more detail).
We also need to find a place to host the games. To sign-up to host the games, directly DM me, Student Loan Debt and tell me that you wish to host the events. These will start today (January 17th, 2020) and end on January 21st, 2020. After, there will be a 2 day voting period (January 21st-January 23rd) where the people will decide who will host the Winter Olympia Games.
If you wish to host, it is required that you have snow. This should be obvious but probably someone would try to have it on a beach or something. However, you do not have to send a team to the Olympia Games if you are hosting. You can just host if you like.
Tournament specifics
You will need to make a team name and a roster of players. Each team will have 4 players. All we need to know is their names. However, you want to be creative, tell us more about them. Send your team name and roster directly to Student Loan Debt.
Competitors can have a skill level between 1 (new athlete) and 10 (professional athlete). All competitors will start at 5 (average) or lower if you request it. If you want to get it higher, do some role play involving all this. The more RP you do, the higher skill levels you can give your team. The higher your skill level, the better chances you have of winning (this is an RP event, of course actually participating in RP gives you advantages).
Once the sign-ups have ended, we will know how many nations wish to compete in the games. This will determine how many events we have, from skiing to skating to curling and more. Once sign-ups end, I will post which events are happening and you can sign up your athletes.
Only 1 athlete per event, meaning you can't put 2 people from your team on the same event.
When is the Tournamanet?
The Tournament will be on January 28th.
Where Will The Scores Be Posted?
The scores will be posted on the DSA Forum. I will also provide links to the scores on the RMB and the Discord server as they come out, along with tagging members who got scores so that they will know. If you cannot see the scores, tell me and I'll try and figure out why

DSA Ocean Race
Ever heard of the Volvo Ocean Race? They wish they could hold a candle to the DSA Ocean Race. This race happens every year in late spring and is a treacherous race around the world with nothing but a sail boat.
The DSA Ocean Race provides the ultimate test of a team and an adventure like no other.
What is it?
It is a race around the world. Teams between 7 and 10 people sail sailing yachts from ocean to ocean, racing against other yachts to arrive to their spot first over a 13,000 nautical mile course.
How Does It Work?
The teams will start in the DSA Capital and sail to their first destination; Venovica. Then they will sail to their next destination, then the next, and so on until they arrive at the finish line in Kathina Dakani.
Each leg of the race is treated as it's own race. Points are awarded in order of which teams reaches the destination first. For example; if there are 7 teams, the first ones to finish will get 7 points, second will get 6, and so on.
Once at their destination, teams are given a break to relax, recover, and eat real food.
How Do I Join?
Comment on the thread below that you wish to join and give your team a name.
https://thedsa.proboards.com/thread/598/dsa-ocean-race-2020
What Are The Times?
Sign-ups will last from May 8th to May 15th. The race will begin on May 17th.
Each leg of the race will (within a time bubble) last a day, with points awarded each day.
The race will end on May 25th.
If you do not sign up before 11:59 PM UTC on May 15th, you cannot enter.
What Are The Rules?
Sailing yachts must stay on or near the designated course; no short cuts.
Substitution of crew members is allowed between legs of the course (but not during)
For movement, you will rely entirely on your sails. Motors and other forms of movement are only allowed for emergency situations.
All crew members will be considered equal in ability. It does not matter if your crew are humans, A.I., nor sapient animals. They will all be treated the same.
All teams will sail on a IMOCA 60 sailing yacht, picture below (feel free to decorate the sailing yacht with your own design)
Some Things I Should Know Before Hand?
The Scorinator program being used is Xkoranate
Xkoranate works by myself entering the names of each team and how skilled they are. It then spits out random numbers to determine your team's score.
Teams will have a skill ranking in the scoranator between 0 (horrible at sailing) and 5 (best sailors in the world). Teams will automatically be placed at 3 (unless requested to be lower).
The Scores are not determined by the host, but by Xkoranate; a machine. The only thing I do control is how each team received those scores (aka the RP about why they were ranked how they were).
Can I Raise My Skill Level and Make My Team Better?
Yes you can.
If you would like to raise your skill level, you should do some RP involving the competition. We love seeing people do RP and, if you do some, you should be rewarded. Your reward is a high skill level and so your team will have a better chance at winning.
If you do a considerable amount of RP involving this competition (beyond just 1 post), then your team skill will be raised to a 4. If you do a lot of RP, then your team skill will be raised to 5, giving you the best chance of winning races.
What Kind of RP Should I Do?
Any kind really. You can interview your sailing crew, you can talk about any sponsors your team has, you can design your sails using the picture above, you can talk about why the team applied for the race, any RP is great!
This applies all throughout the race, as well. If you do RP while the race is happening, you can raise your skill level
Warnings
You will want your crew members to be more than sailors. We recommend some of them be trained in medical response, sail-making, diesel engine repair, electronics, nutrition, mathematics, and hydraulics. You should be prepared for the long periods of time on the water.
The seas are a rough and deadly place filled with mystery and mayhem. If any of your crew are harmed, injured, face any other form of damage, or die, the DSA Ocean Race Committee will not be held responsible.
I repeat, some of your crew members could die (somebody in the race will, as is tradition of the DSA Boat Race), especially as we near the Connolly Strait on the 5th Leg of the competition. If you are entering specific RP characters that you do not want them to die and/or be badly injured, then you can tell me so and I will not lay a finger on them. However, your entire team is not immune, so you cannot make your entire team untouchable. This is a dangerous race.

Day 1: DSA Capital (May 17th, 2020)
We are here in the DSA Capital where the DSA 2020 Ocean Race is beginning. 19 different teams are competing in this race and all 19 will sail across the world to hold the rank of winner of the DSA Ocean Race! The first stop, Venovica, is a short hop compared to the many miles of open ocean that lay ahead.
and....they're off!
Day 2: DSA Capital to Venovica (May 18th, 2020)
While only a short hop compared to what lay ahead, the first leg was a stressful one. The struggle to fight against the northward current saw the fleet stick together, but the Golden Thread was happy to break from the pack and the early confidence paid off. A strong southern wind provided a sling shot for the teams and it was the Golden Thread and Missionary Arks that led the charge. However, not all was well for the teams. The Roosters bought an AC unit from a local merchant the day of the race called the Aeolus Conditioner. The team was doing good and could see the southern islands of Venovica while in 1st place. However, the AC unit soon when haywire and shot so much cold air at their sails that, by the time they could turn it off, it blew them almost all the way back to the DSA Capital, which landed them in last place.

Day 3: Venovica to Joseon (May 19th, 2020)
If the strong breeze to the isles of Venovica had thrown teams into the deep end, the opening stages of the second leg from Venovica to the shores of Joseon was a baptism of fire. Many kilometers of full-on downwind racing at a relentless pace had the race remain as intense as everyone expected. The race to Joseon had been close with the fleet barley out of sight of each other. Compared to the previous leg, this leg had a new obstacle that the teams had to confront. The Cephesylon Archipelago, with it's many straits, jagged cliffs, and colliding currents is a difficult barrier for ships to pass from one ocean to the other. However, despite the challenges, the Sailors of Infinity led the charge into the islands and found itself in first place. However, not all were so fortunate. O'Malley's Féin, who had been trailing the group since leaving Venovica, instead of following the usual trading routes taken through the archipelago, chose to take a more reclusive way that served as a shortcut. It was a narrow strait faced with two obstacles. One side featured a whirlpool made by the strait's currents while the other side featured the infamous Synthia, a cynical old woman who owns the strait waters and likes to snipe people who try and go through it. The O'Malley's Féin couldn't sacrifice the ship so they avoided the whirlpool, but at the cost of Synthia no-scope sniping one of the crew members. The lost was tragic, but allowed them to win second place in the 2nd leg.

Day 4: Joseon to Proxmire (May 20th, 2020)
After facing the daring currents and cliffs of the Cephesylon Archipelago, the teams were off to sail the currents to Proxmire. With strong winds and good waters, this leg of the race came as a relief to many of the sailors. The greatest benefit came to the Forward Into The Night who were the first to sail into the harbor. While most of the fleets had smooth sailing, not all were so lucky.
The team EPIC Turbinian Crew did not pack enough food for their trip and were growing more hungry. They discovered an island while sailing that had a small town. On the island was a family called the Pastrygoneians (they own a bake shop and thought they were clever with their pun name). While exploring the landscape of the island, the EPIC crew heard a loud screech from the nearby forest. Suddenly, dozens of people ran out from the trees in a frenzy. The EPIC crew recognized that this was trouble and hurried back to the yacht. They tried to sail away, but the Pastrygoneians launched large poundcakes at the yatch that resulted in the ship sinking. As the crew tried to swim back to the ship, the Pastrygoneians threw spears of sharp wafflecones at them, killing one crew member and injuring two. The Pastrygoneians descended onto the rest of the crew to eat them and use their bodies in 101 different cooking styles.

Day 5: Proxmire to Cessnia (May 21st, 2020)
The 4th leg of the race takes our challengers straight across the Ocean of Solidarity with no land surrounding them for hundreds of miles. The teams huddled together to sail along the Connolly Circle for the quickest route. The harsh waves of the Connolly Circle proved their reputation, rocking all the contestants. To the surprise of the rest of the team, the Roosters, who had been falling behind in the competition, led the pack and were the first to reach the isles of Cessnia. While sailing to the finish line, a rain of ammunition fell upon the teams from a nearby Cessnian fleet who were firing after a funeral. The Flying Debtman, who was in the lead, was hit by one of the shots resulting in injuring two of the crew and destroying the mast of the yatch. By the time they sailed into port, they were 3rd from last place. However, they did not suffer as much as the Thunder Sea Birds and Kuroyumi did in scores.
While sailing through the ocean, the Thunder Sea Birds ran out of food and decided to try and find an island to stop at for food. They found an island that was home to a woman named Fergie. She gave them a banquet as they were hungry. However, she slipped an elixir into the food, one that made the sailors very submissive to her. She's into role-play and made them all pretend they were dirty little pigs. However, the skipper of the yatch didn't eat the food because why not and was able to bailmail her with embarrassing pictures of her from that christmas party. The crew returned to the ship, feeling awkward, and sailed off, only to make it into the Cessnian harbor second to last.
The Kuroyumi were the last to leave Proxmire. They crew met a group of traveling peace loving people called the Lettuce Eaters. They offered the crew a special variance of Lettuce that was so delicious that those who ate of it left off caring about home and did not even want to continue the race and say what had happened to them, but were for staying and munching lettuce with the Lettuce Eaters without thinking further of their race; nevertheless, though they wept bitterly as their team captain forced them back to the yacht. This caused the team to stay docked longer than everyone else, which was quite a disadvantage and showed in the final scores.

Day 6: Cessnia to Talamia (May 22nd, 2020)
Leg 5, the leg of the race we have all been waiting for. This leg, right before the final leg of the DSA Ocean Race, is the 2nd longest and most brutal leg of them all. Contestants must sail from west Cessnia into the Connolly Circle, through the Connolly Strait, and back north to the equator. The opening conditions were just as brutal as the forecast predicted as the fleet punched it's way eastward. However, there was far more to come. From a high speed relentless blast of wind through the freezing waste of the approaching polar waters, physically and mentally, this leg was testing. The Moonlight Raiders were the first to trip up in a big way after a crash jibe left them with a damaged mast. As they throttled back to make repairs, they hemorrhaged kilometers to their competitors. The breezy and brutal conditions were also taking a toll on the fleets, whether from the water crashing over the deck or the waves throwing crew members around, resulting in injuries. Among those to suffer badly was the Forward To the Night of whom had a crew member that suffered broken bones in their foot and back. Meanwhile, leading the charge, O'Malley's Féin and the Thalastifos continued their duel at the front of the fleet.
The voyage through the Connolly Channel and around Romaxia has drawn the attention of many sailors and sailing followers alike for generations. The cold wasteland at the bottom of the world has always had a fearsome reputation; big waves, serious breeze, cold like little have experienced, and an air of mystery and unknown. The pace was blistering, the maneuvers were relentless, and the weather was haunting. Striking the right balance between speed and safety was stressful in this narrow passage that was only a few kilometers wide. However, the weather had more in store. The reports of huge waves, high winds, damaged sails, and fatigued crew became common place. While dealing with all that the Connolly Channel had to offer, the issue of ice became one of grave importance. While many struggled to reach through the ice sheets and ice bergs, the Golden Thread had an idea; hold a nekyia. The crew hunted down a Suceavijan Seal which are supposedly able to talk for the dead. They report to have consulted with one of the many sailors that had perished in this Channel who told them the best route to avoid the ice. Whether or not this is true, the Golden Thread were the first to escape the Connolly Circle.
However, not all people were so fortunate. The Random Chimp Event's yacht had sailed into packed ice and were stuck. Their time in the ice had cost them much time as they were halted in the cold air of the Connolly Channel. However, a mysterious event is reported to have occurred. While stuck, they had spotted and rescued a nearly frozen and emaciated woman named Victoria Franklin. While waiting for the ice to break, she recounted a tale to the crew about a giant creature she chased all the way to the Connolly Circle. The story involved tales of scientific madness, death, torment, heartache, and how Victoria has supposedly stitched together body parts and brought to life a giant incel. She recounts how much she regretted her decisions and died some time later from illness. The ice soon broke, allowing the Random Chimp Event to continue on.
Having snatched an early lead in the leg, the O'Malley's Féin were first to round the Syvian Peninsula and enter the Herrebrugh. Shortly after celebrating their rounding of Romaxia, disaster struck for the Dawn Mariners team. The Connolly Channel's winds were not done yet as their mast had snapped. A crushing blow to a team that had been forced out of a leg of the trip. Motoring the remaining distance to the closest ship repairing dock gave the crew time to reflect. The Rainbow Cruisers was also fighting to stay in the hunt after discovering halfway up the Romaxia Coast a potentially serious leak. Meanwhile, the race at the front of the fleet had intensified. The O'Malley's Féin's lead was under threat by the Thalastifos as the pair headed north to the finish at Talamia. However, it was the O'Malley's Féin that finished first in the 5th Leg of the Ocean Race.

Day 7: Talamia to SHTFN (May 23rd, 2020)
The 6th leg of the race brings the fleet back to the equator on a voyage to the nation of So Hard To Find A Name. The shifts in heat and cold have taken an effect on the sailors, but they continue to trug along. The Rainbow Cruisers was in the lead, however, only a few kilometers before the harbor, the Sea Cats was able to take the lead and finish first. As for the Missionary Ark, however, their voyage was less than ideal. While sailing past the islands of Taliand, they had heard a lovely sound. It was the sound of singing. As the sailing yacht neared a small island, they spotted a group of women singing "Pump It" by the Dark Eyed Peas. It was so angelic that they sailed up to them and joined in song. This went on for a while until the yacht captain remembered that they were in a race, smacked up the band with a sandal, and got the crew back into the race, only to come in last, however.
The scores are available below

Day 8: SHTFN to Xingal (May 24th, 2020)
The 7th leg of the race takes the racers back into the north to race to the nation of Xingal. Determistan continued the luck they had on the previous leg by continually staying in the front of the fleet and securing first place when they sailed into the Xingalese harbor. On the leg that would take them into their home waters, the Kuroyumi pulled away from usually being in the back of the fleet to joining the front and winning 4th place in the 7th leg. With this being the penultimate leg before the final one, the teams put in all their might to gain extra points and extra points they gained. With one team at 82 points, three teams at 81 points, and others not far behind, the potential winner of the DSA 2020 Ocean Race could be anyone. Wel...maybe not anyone. While most of the fleets had smooth sailing, not all were so lucky. The Flying Debtman's toilet was broken and they did not wish to pollute the waters with their defecation, so they sailed onto and island to properly dispose of it. They found a cave and went to dispose of it in there, but were soon trapped inside. A large man (and I mean large, like this guys crushes logs with this thighs large) with an eye patch had trapped them in there, apparently living there, who wanted to attack them for trespassing. However, Jake Sinclair, one of the crew members of the Flying Debtman, was able to seduce him and his lumberjack thighs, during which they disposed of the defecation in his eye and blinded him. His neighbors, who are even more thicc than him, came to see what was happening and the crew ran out and quickly sailed away. This cost them quite the amount of time, resulting in them being in last place.
The scores are available below
https://thedsa.proboards.com/post/1977
Day 9: Xingal to Kathina Dakani (May 25th, 2020)
This was it; the last leg. The final leg took the fleet from the isles of Xingal into the waters of the NKD. Knowing that this leg is the end of their treacherous journey, all the teams were eager to cross the finishing line. In the end, it was the Sailors of Infinity that finished first in the 8th leg, followed by Forward Into the Night, on the stretch to their home nation, coming in last.
Once all the teams crossed the line, the scores were added and the winner was determined. Taking first is the Thalastifos from the nation of Talamia, followed by the Crimson Crusader from the nation of Qingling in second and a tie of the Sailors of Infinity from the nation of Ezechard and the Rainbow Cruisers from the nation of Determistan in third.

The current Minister of Role-Play allows for role-playing warfare of all kinds, from civil to international. However, there are a few rules that this current administration has for war to be official and recognized.
A party must declare war against the other party(ies) and have the party(ies) know that they declared war against them and consent to it. Suprise attacks will be frowned upon and possibly result in punishment.
Size of Military
Make it realistic. Don't be a God with a billion people in your military. NS Population stats are stupid and we all know it, so set a realistic size for your country's population and base your military size off of that.
Put a good amount of people into reserves. Or none. Which ever. Also, the amount of people in your reserves count so your overall military size.
Unless you specify in a dispatch what percentage of your military is in what branches, we'll all just assume these are the sizes and branches of your active military:
~Army (land forces): 50%
~Navy (water forces): 20%
~Air Force: 20%
~Marines (water-to-land and land-to-water forces): 10%
Actual Fighting
The wars will be d20 based. Here are some general guidelines.
20= we just obliterated your entire fighting force.
15= I destroyed half of your forces
10= Guess it's a draw then or We destroyed half of each other, let's draw back.
5= You destroyed half of my forces
1= my entire fighting force just died. I cry.
This relies almost entirely on the honors system. If you role a low number, say you rolled it. Remember, this is RP. It's not fun when you cheat. It's okay to lose.
After you do a turn, let the other person have a turn. Have it work like a board game where one person moves at a time.
Don't go overboard with aggressive actions. If the person you're attacking hasn't had their turn, don't go. And also think of what's realistic. Just landing in a country doesn't mean next turn you can roll to blow up the capital.
Things To Consider in Dice Rolls
Fighting in own country: +1 to military action (such as manouvering or actual fighting)
Fighting in unfamiliar territory: -1 to all movement rolls
A nat 20 doesnt get any bonuses regardless if it would have.
You have to roll for morale, and preparedness (both d20s) at the start of any battle.
The more you fight, the more wavering your army will get (war fatigue). Each consecutive loss is a -1 to morale roll
There's quite a few things to consider.
The size of a fighting force definitely changes how likely you're to win a battle.
Being in a climate or terrain your forces aren't used to.
Fighting in your own country would give you a boost
When invading, if the country is greatly weaponized, it's gonna be hard to put down the rebellious civilians
Scientific advancement of your country or the enemy country will be effective. Doesn't matter how much funding you have if you're using sling-shots to fight tanks.
Arms manufacturing will be effective. How easily is your country able to produce weapons for your soldiers?
Agriculture and manufacturing that would determine your ability to feed and supply your military (a HUGE thing in war)
There's lots of things to consider with dice rolls, but the above are some things I heavily encourage you to consider.
Trade Deals
If you are in a trade deal with another country with certain industries, you can use that to buff up your industry stat for wars. For example, if you have a trade deal with another country to boost your Arms Manufacturing, you can add a boost to yours for stats.
You can only use this if both countries in the trade deal acknowledge that there is a trade deal and for what.
There must be documentation of this trade deal somewhere, whether a dispatch, factbook, forums, etc, that is easily accessible to others. You can't just randomly whip out something like "Oh, this country has been supplying me giant guns for years. We just never told anyone until this war started".
Ending The Conflict
To end a war, parties must agree to a truce or a treaty. A truce would only end the fighting. A treaty would end it and establish the rules of surrender and spoils of war. The MoRP or Director of W&P will oversee the drafting of the treaty. Once the involved parties agree to the conditions in the treaty, the MoRP or Director of W&P will declare that the war is over.
If need be, the MoRP or Director of W&P can end the conflict at any time. This could be caused by one party continually god-moding, continually harassing others outside of the warfare, or other reasons that ruin the enjoyment of RP war.
Nuclear Warfare
The current administration will allow the use of nuclear warfare. However, this doesn't mean you just fire nukes like they're bullets. There has to be actual RP reason as to why you would use it. Also, countries that have the No WMD policy cannot use nukes. And if the WMD policy isn't in place, there have to be logical RP reasons as to why you have nukes.
Anarchy
An anarchist government would not even have an organized military, seeing as there isn't anyone to oversee it. It would be composed of militias, created by the people themselves. As result, anarchist countries can only fight defensively (i.e. only fight in their territory)
Imperialism
This is a DemSoc region. Imperialism is looked down upon. You can try to expand through this, but just know that you will be looked down upon. Also, you can't actually expand without permission from the Director of Cartography. Also, dominating other nations through imperialist military prowess can turn off others to RP, so be aware of that.
Assssination
In war, assassination can be allowed. HOWEVER, this will be difficult. You will need to roll the dice and get a number greater than 38.
Also, you may only roll once to assassinate a person at a time. You don't just have a bunch of assassins in a line standing next to said person. What do you think this is? The CIA trying to assassinate Fidel Castro 638 times?
40= Perfect kill, Perfect Evade
39= Assassinated. Assassin is chased and manages to escape.
38= Assssinated. Assassin is caught, however.
30-37= Failed. Got real close, but not good enough
20-29= Failed. Something happened on their way there.
10-19= Failed. Caught before they even left.
2-9= What happened? Did they kill themselves? They weren't even prepared yet.
June is LGBT Pride Month. With that comes this website that celebrates Socavija Pride Events that take place in the cultural center of the DSA Capital!
About every week, the Ministry of Role Play puts out a question to the region's RPers about what their country is like. It can range through a variety of things, like government, customs, sciences, culture, black markets, lots of thing. It's to try and help people better flesh out their RP country and hopefully be fun. This is an archive of all the questions asked so far.
Occasionally, the Ministry of Role Play releases worldbuilding questions, things to get you thinking about your country and societies and hopefully get you to develop them further than you thought you could. This archive will keep a record of the ones asked.
What does autumn mean for your country? What happens in your country during autumn? Anything big? Do cultural beliefs or rituals (rituals can be basic daily things or cultural actions, not always big religious things) come with it? Anything unique with your specific ecosystem and nature?
What are a few important institutions in your country? By institution, I don't mean fancy schmancy "institutes", but more specifically "organizations or activities that are self-perpetuating and valued for their own sake".
They could be formal institutions backed by law and with rules, like the institution of military or democratic governance, or they could be informal institutions that are unwritten and unofficial, but still powerful in your society, like if a particular sport or etiquette serves as an important part of your society. These are just examples of some.
Does your country have a black market? If so, what are people paying for that they are not allowed to pay for? Are the goods and services they're paying for illegal under your formal institutions of laws and regulations or are they more wrong under informal institutions like cultural and religious beliefs?
What is something from your country’s history that your people look down upon? Was there anything they did in the past and think “We messed up back then”? Anything they distain from their country’s past? What makes your people think they’ve improved and are better than their past society? Could be something you also find bad or could be something you like that your people find bad today
What is something spooky that people associate with your country? A particular creature? A folktale? A legendary monster? A particular story? Rituals or beliefs of your peoples? A certain event? Maybe a odd or unsettling location? Strange phenomena? What do you have that make people spooked or associate you with spookiness? Doesn’t have to be supernatural as the real world has plenty of unsettling things, but yours might be
What is an urban legend from your country? Folklore can be made in any time period, even in today’s time. What’s a recently created belief or story that may or may not be real in your country? Could be simple like a warning against eating two foods at the same time or complex enough to have a plot and characters involved
How does your country treat the death of a person? This one could be lengthy, depending on what you come up with
• How do you dispose of the body? Burial, cremation, some other way? Why do you dispose of the dead in the ways you do?
• How do people view death? What do people do after someone dies? What customs might accompany those who mourn?
• How does your government view death? What laws follow the death of a person? Are there regulations with disposal? How does death affect those still living in concepts like debt or inheritance or ownership?
Ignoring the historical implications, Halloween exists in our RP world. Does your country celebrate it? Is it society wide, a relatively minor holiday, or only celebrated by a few? Does your country have anything unique about the holiday to your society that might not be part of celebrations in other countries?
If your country doesn’t celebrate it or it’s relatively minor, do you have any holidays similar to it or it’s themes?
(you don’t have to answer each individually. These are more suggestions to get you thinking about your worldbuilding)
Is your country a nuclear state? By that I mean do you have nuclear weapons?
If so, how did you go about getting them? What’s your population’s view on them?
How do you act internationally with them? Do you use their existence in negotiations and threats or no? Are you open about having them, deny having them, or are more opaque about it and don’t confirm or deny having them? Has your stockpile been growing, shrinking, or remaining the same?
If you don’t have them, why? What’s your population’s view on them? Did you chose not to have them? Are you technologically capable of having them? Did you have any in the past but have since either given them up or deconstructed them? Are you open about not having them, claim to have them despite having none, or are you more opaque about it and don’t confirm nor deny having them?
Again, these are more general ideas. You don’t have to answer each question individually
What is your country like in regards to tourism?
How open are you to tourism? Does tourism make up a large part of your economy? How accommodating is your country, government wise, business wise, and citizen wise, to tourists? How safe is it to be a tourist in your country?
What attracts tourists to your location? Climate? Monuments? Cities? Landscape? Events? Other?
How much of your tourism is vacations vs other motivations? Do people make pilgrimages to your country, whether secular or religious?
How much freedom do tourists have in your country? Can they explore wherever, restrictive in ways, or is it tightly monitored and curated?
These are just ideas to think of and you’re not limited to these
Big question: how does gender factor into your country?
Some things to optionally consider
- Firstly, does gender factor into your country?
- How does your country see the nature of gender? Is it rigid? Flexible? Fluid?
- Is there a binary? Are there more than two recognized in your country? Is there a number? Do you have gender?
- Are there gender roles? Does one gender have certain responsibilities while others have different ones? Do they share any responsibilities? Is there division in responsibilities at all? If you want to go into detail, what responsibilities do they each have? What can a person of one gender do that people of other genders can't do?
- Do any of the recognized genders have power in certain fields that others do not hold power in? What fields do they hold power in? Specific ones? All in general?
- Has the history of gender in your country changed over time or remained relatively consistent? How much of that change was internal? How much of it was due to foreign influence, whether through voluntary acculturation or through coercion?
- Where does gender and all it associations come from in your country? Does culture have a say in it? Religion? Economics? What institutions have a say in gender in your country and push it to be what it is?
-Are there competeing ideas of what gender is in your country? Are there different societies/nations within your country with different ideas relating to gender?
How does your country approach marriage? Another big one.
Some things to optionally consider
These will enter some sensitive areas.
- Does your country have marriage? Do they have an institution of societally recognizing relationships or are relationships a more personal matter?
- Why do people marry? Do people marry to be with a person they love? Do they marry in order to establish families and lineages (maybe more the pleasures of the latter?)? Do they marry to secure benefits like financial, health, etc? Do they marry because of social pressures, whether a religion promoting marriage or a societal push to be in a marriage or to try and fit in to societal concepts of how relationships work? How much attraction is in marriage versus it being more an arrangement for other purposes?
- Who is allowed to marry whom? Start with the obvious: what sexes and genders may marry? Does sex and gender factor into who is allowed to marry? But other things to consider: if there are social classes, can people intermarry between them? Between different ethnic groups? Between religions/backgrounds in that area? Can people within the same family marry? Who can and cannot marry?
- How does age factor into marriage? Is there a time in a person's life where they're expected to marry? Can someone go past that time? Is there an age where you're thought of as too old to marry or unlikely to marry? How young can one marry? How wide of an age gap can there be between marriage partners?
- Does your country engage mainly in monogamy or polygamy (marriage between two people vs more than two people)? If monogamy, how does your country see polygamy? If polygamy, how does your country see monogamy? If polygamy, can anyone be polygamous or is it limited to certain groups/genders/etc? Is there a limit to how many people you can marry, like bigamy’s limit of two partners? Is group marriage allowed, where three or more people marry each other all at once, or can you only marry individually?
- How is faithfulness approached? Is adultery illegal within your country? Can people, whether socially or legally, have relationships outside of marriage? How are extramarital relationships seen?
- How much choice do people have in marriage? Are arranged marriages encouraged? Tolerated? Discouraged? Do all parties (or any party) need to consent in order to be married?
- How is divorce approached? Can people divorce? How do people feel about divorce? Is it fine, wrong, or something else? Can you marry after divorce? Is there a limit to that? How does divorce affect ownership and guardianship, whether over who owns property, assets, etc or how parentship factors in?
- How are the rights of different people within the marriage approached? Are all involved spouses equal? Is coverture a practice, of a spouse surrendering their legal rights and obligations to another spouse? If divorce is possible, can any partner initiate it or can only certain partners initiate divorce?
- Is the government involved in marriage? Does your government encourage it? If so, does that include things like giving more property rights, financial benefits, inheritance, etc? How much does the government regulation of marriage affect the relationships and marriages of its people? Are there any rights or actions that non-married couples/groups may want that they can’t have due to not being married?
Ya’ll, this covers a lot of things you can consider, but marriage has SO many things to consider that I can’t list them all without making this almost an essay.
What was the last major development that happened in your country? Something that really changed things up
Could be as big as civil wars or revolutions, or something more like a technological implementation. Maybe a large social change occurred, some kind of economic situation, whatever it may be. Something that you think changed your country recently. Societies are not static, no matter how much fantasy wants you to think that
Does your country have a population of sapient animals? If so, what are the interactions like between them and others? What's the history of interaction between humans and the sapient animals that live within your country? Do humans and sapient animals intermingle or are they like separate societies within one country? What's going on in your country? Also, if it applies, is your country majority sapient animals? Same questions but non-human focused. What's it like ot be in a world where most other countries are human constructed?
If you do not have sapient animals, what does your country think of sapient animals from elsewhere? How do they approach interactions internationally?
(yes human are animals, but you know what I mean)
What is the strangest organism in your country? It might be an animal, but could be a plant, a fungus, some other kind of organism, whatever it might be. What kind of thing lives in your country that you think is the strangest? The weirdest? Most bizarre? What makes it so weird? Tell us about the organism and its weirdness.
and no, TERFs don't count
In the DSA RP world, our version of Christmas is called Jeb!mas. Can be all the same irl traditions, but instead based around the religion of Jeb!ism, our RP equivalent of Christianity
Do any societies in your country celebrate Jeb!mas?
-If you have it, do you call it Jeb!mas?
-How religious is it? Are celebrations mainly religious? Mainly secular? A more middle ground mix?
-What traditions accompany it? Any of the ones from irl? Any unique ones? What similiarities and differences are there? What kind of culture surrounds it? From decor to stories to characters to attitudes to customs to music, whatever.
-How widespread is it? Celebrated all across the country? Only in some places? Who celebrates it? Is it a recognized holiday that people get time off for? Or arre people possibly required to be off for it?
-When is it for you country? Is it December 25th or another day? Is it one day or multiple? Is it even in winter or a different season all together?
-Are there other holidays surrounding it, creating a holiday season? Is Jeb!mas the only holiday celebrated around that time? Is it the main holiday of the time or is it overshadowed by another? Is it its own separate holiday or part of a larger and longer one?
If you do not have Jeb!mas in your country (whether from lack of interest or even the banning of it), do you have any holidays similiar to it? What are those holidays like? Similiar questions to the above
What is your country like in regards to pets?
Some questions that can help you think
-How do your societies feel about pets? Do they enjoy having them? Are they questionable about having them? Do they think it's bad to have pets? Or maybe the opposite and it's largely encouraged to have pets?
-What reasons do your people get pets? Companionship? Protection, whether of people or property? Aesthetic and showmanship? Theraputic reasons? Cultural/Social pressures? Any other reasons?
-What animals would you usually find as pets in your country? Dogs? Cats? Fish? Any others that are popular among your people? Do you have any animals that are unique to your country that are also pets?
-Is there any government involvement with pets? Are there any laws regulating pet ownership? Are there any agencies that deal with pets? Are there any animals that are not allowed to be pets? Regulations on how to acquire pets? Any laws regarding how many pets you can own at once? Do you even legally own the pet?
-How do your people handle the death of a pet? Are owners encouraged to quickly move on? Are pets quickly replaced with new ones? Is pet loss considered near to equal to familial loss? Are there any rituals, whether secular or religious, taken after the death of a pet? How are dead pet bodies dealt with? Are there pet cemeteries? Are pets buried with their owners?
How does your country generate energy?
Where your country is in the world may limit or expand your access to and use of energy resources. Your climate, latitude, shore access, elevation, access to volcanos, etc, lots of things can alter what you got. However, we allow players to decide what resources they have, so do whatever you like here.
Some questions just to get you thinking
-Do you use nonrenewables? Examples such as coal, natural gas, petroleum, etc
-Do you use renewables? Those include solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, etc
-Do you use nuclear energy? Do you use fission power or has your country developed the ability to use fusion? How do you handle nuclear waste?
-Do you use any paranatural energy generation? Whether in use of metamaterials or using paranatural processes and actions to support your current energy generation?
-Do you use a combo of energy types? Does your country have any preference towards one over another?
-How does your country approach energy emissions? Do you give off a lot? Are you trying to limit your emissions? Have you reached net zero emissions, whether by not giving off emissions or by removing emissions while you give them off? What is common life like to have the emissions you have? Whether in transportation, home useage, etc
-Do you import any of your energy or do you generate everything within your own borders?
-How much energy consumption occurs in your country? Do your people use a lot of energy? Could be for heat, air conditioning, lighting, etc. What's the biggest uses of energy in your country?
-How reliable is energy generation and distribution in your country? Is your energy security good or does it face threats, whether from overreliance on foreign import, poor infrastructure, attacks on that infrastructure (terrorism? war?), energy supply manipulation, etc. Are blackouts common? Does everyone have access to energy or do some face fuel poverty?
How does your country feel about privacy?
Some questions just to get you thinking, among many you could think of
-Does your country see privacy as something to protect? If not seen that way, what is your country like? I ask that as most of us live in countries with privacy protections
-What aspects of privacy are protected? Is your individual privacy protected? Privacy of groups or organizations? Privacy on a societal level? How much privacy does the government have?
-Is the protection of privacy solely a social institution or is it also written into law? Is privacy a right? With that in mind, how much privacy do people actually have in your country?
-How extensive is surveillance in your country? Who does the surveillance? The government? Corporations? Other organizations? Private citizens? Who is surveilling who? And why? Do people know about it? If so, how much do they actually know or how much do they care? Do they support it?
What is your country's relation to astronomy? Not space exploration, but astronomy. This dispatch about our solar system may help
Some helpful questions to get you thinking
-What were the early beliefs regarding the universe and the sky? Did your people connect celestial objects with their spirituality and religions? Were they secular in their beliefs regarding the sky? What did they subjectively see when they looked out at the sky? Did these beliefs change? Were they abandoned? Maybe altered? Why did they change, or do we not know why? How did/do your people view their place in the universe?
-Are constellations a thing in your society, of connecting the stars to make them into images? If so, are they unique to your culture or were they imported by another culture's ideas regarding them? What constellations do you have? (we have no official star map so, honestly, you can make the stars look like whatever you want)
-How does the sky, if at all, affect time in your country? If space affects it, how do your people measure time? Do you follow the standard DSA calendar that's basically the Gregorian calendar? Do you have your own unique calendar? If it is based on celestial objects, which? The sun? The moon? The stars? Other planets near by? Multiple objects?
-When and how did your society start studying the sky? Did you develop tools to help study them? Did you create observatories to study the sky? More importantly, why? What purpose did studying the sky serve? Navigation? Time? Religion? Scientific pursuit? Pure curiosity?
What is your country's relation to space exploration? This carries on from last week's question about astronomy. This dispatch about our solar system may help you think.
Some helpful questions to get you thinking
-Does your country have a space program? Is this government run, a private program? Maybe a mix? Are there more than one? What's the goal? Just astronomy? Human/Sapient spaceflight? What are they trying to do?
-Does your country have any satellties in orbit around Delusia? What is it used for? Astronomy? Weather treacking? Navigation? Communication? Spying?
-Does your country have a space station? What is it used for? Research? Tourism? Space dock? Industry? Why would you have a habitable station in space?
-Has your country ever been to Danae, our moon? Why? Are you still there? What for? Do you have structures there? Habitable stations? Do any of your people permanently live there?
-Has your country ever physically explored beyond Delusia and Danae? Have you sent satellites to or pass other planets? Again, what for? Have you ever attempted to send someone to another planet?
-Has anything your country made gone interstellar? Has it left our solar system?
-How accessible is space to your people? Does anyone from your country go into space? Can only some people afford/be allowed to?
No culture is stagnant. As long as societies exists, cultures, the social behaviors and norms of a society, will appear, evolve, change, and fade. Can you give an example of a time when the culture of your society was changing? What was your culture like at one point, what was it like at another, and what caused that change in culture?
Could be small like new music trends, adoption of different foods, new story tellings, or could be larger like revolutions, language or religious shifts, how new large scale implementing of new tech, anything really
Societies are large and contain many opinions, a lot being controversial and dividing societies, whether a soft disagreement or enough to make people start throwing fists.
What’s something that’s currently going on in your country that’s controversial to your population? Not something taboo inherently, but something causing a lot of discussion and division, something with a lot of opinions
When creating a society in role play, something that should be obvious but doesn't seem to be common is consideration of architecture. Architecture is a major aspect of a culture and reflects on what a society is like. There's so many civilizations and time periods irl where their architecture is some of the first things we think of. So, let's reflect on that.
What is your architecture like?
Just some things to think about
-What are some common building materials? Why use that kind? Availability? Cost? Aesthetic? Structural integrity? Something else? Are they all within your country or do you have to import material?
-How tall can buildings be? Is there a set limit? If so, why? Is there a cost element to it? A legal element? Maybe a cultural element to height?
-What are the differences in materials and appearance between a lower-class, middle-class, and upper-class type house? Are there differences? Are certain features, like certain rooms, looks, functions, etc only found in some kinds of houses and not others?
-Are there any irl styles your architecture takes after?
-Do your buildings have to withstand anything special, such as torrential rain, hurricanes, frequent flooding, attacks of some kind, blizzards, earthquakes, searing heat? How do they do this? What design implementations are there that help against these factors?
-Are there any major architectual features that stand out as "This is definitely my country"? Any particular buildings that greatly reflect this to be recognized globally, like a Big Ben or a Taj Mahal or most Washington D.C. government buildings?
What do your people look like?
some topics to get your mind stirring
• Is your country ethnically homogenous or is there a diversity of ethnic groups? In this case, I mean in terms of groups with distinctly different looks. If diverse..,you might have a lot of thinking to do here
• What complexion do your people have?
• What hair and eye colors are most standard? Are there any that are rare enough that they’d stand out there?
• What is hair like there? Is baldness common anywhere? How is body hair treated? What do people think of beards? Are there any different standards with different groups or persons? What hair styles are common or uncommon?
• What’s height like? How tall or short are your people?
• Does gender factor into differences of appearance or is there not much difference between genders?
• What physical types and characteristics are currently fashionable? Like tan vs. pale skin, thick vs. thin, blonde vs. brunette, muscles vs. “dead poet”, etc
• Are there any visually unique physical features to your people?
• Are your people even describable in the same way as humans? Are your people human? If not, what do they look like? Do any try and emulate humans in appearance or do most not care to?
If you’re looking for a section on clothes, you can talk about that, but I’ll probably make that it’s own thing. For this, imagine all your people are naked
It’s St.Patrick’s Day, the day when people use an ethnic diaspora’s existence to drink. So, let’s ask about that.
What are diaspora like for you? This’ll be tricky cause of our consent RP system, so only talk about this in vague terms without mentioning specific countries unless other players have signed off on it
• How much of a diaspora of your people exists around the world? Is it a low number? A high one? Why have so many people left your country?
• Of your diaspora, how much do they cling onto their culture? Generally speaking, at least. Did a lot assimilate? Is there a strong homeland culture among your diaspora where ever they go? Or is there a new culture that’s blending of your culture with the diaspora’s new homes?
• How connected is your diaspora to your country? Do you reach out to them? Do many come back and visit? Do you encourage them to move back entirely?
• Are there holidays and festivities your diaspora celebrate abroad? Are these festivals strong or lightly celebrated?
• What about the people in your country who don’t come from there? How welcoming are you to other cultures in your borders? Do you encourage or even demand assimilation? Are you a melting pot of culture? A mosaic maybe? How open are your people to other cultures inside their borders?
There’s lots of ways to approach this question
We have officially sprung into spring, so let’s answer some questions about the budding season!
• Are there any holidays/festivals that are celebrating during spring? Do these have anything to do with the season itself? What kind of themes do they celebrate? Are there different areas in your country that celebrate a spring holiday that other areas don't? If so what factors contribute to only some people celebrating it and not all.
• What changes in nature does spring bring for your country? Is it a far cry from winter months, or much of the same? Are there any species of animals that migrate back to your nation in Spring. Are there any that come out of hibernation?
• Are there any rituals or traditions done around this time? They can be as mundane as ‘Spring cleaning’ to more official government events.
• Do any sports seasons begin in spring?
As times goes on, culture evolves and changes, and that includes fashion.
Tell me about two styles of clothing, one either an older style or a traditional one, and the other a modern common style. What differences are there between these two? When and why did styles change? How out of place is the older style if someone wore it today?
As today is a celebration of foundings, that’ll be what the question is
Tell us about the founding of your country
Could be lots of things.
• When was it founded? How old are you?
• Why was it founded?
• What was it like when it was founded? What conditions and pressures were there?
• Is your country an indigenous state, a colonial state, or a new regime replacing the previous? If the last one, how far back does your civilization go? How many iterations are there?
• How different is the modern state of your country compared to when it was founded?
• Get creative. Sure y’all can think of other things to lore dump about
If your country is run by a state, it’s extremely likely your government doesn’t have 100% transparency and they’re hiding something from the public. Could be corruption, covert operations that run counter to the public image, secret branches, unknown programs or experiments, how much money they spend on coffee, something they don’t want the larger world to know.
What’s something your government keeps secret from the public?
In honor of the highest holiday that is today: drugs
They're pretty common. Nearly every society has them in one way or another. They could be on the periphery of society from bad views of them, they could have an entire culture and market surrounding them, maybe you're even expected to consume drugs. They could be medicinal, recreational, over-the-counter, black market, anything. They could be a purely natural substance, whether from a plant, animal, fungus, whatever. They could be synthetic, made in a lab or through rituals using a wide variety of things. They alter you physiologically, mentally, emotionally, in many ways. Could be good, could be bad.
Tell me about the drugs in your country. What are their legality? What's the economy for them like? How do people view it and its takers? What drugs do you have? Do you have any special or unique ones in RP that don't exist IRL? What are they like?
In a culture, stories propagate and some become known to almost everyone. It could be in the form of folklore, ballads, novels, radio dramas, tv or movie series, anything. Some stories just really grab the culture.
What’s the most popular story/stories in your country? Is it ancient? Old? New? How do people feel about it? Is it recognized as purely fictional or is there some belief in it being true? What has been the effect it’s had on your culture?
-What kind of sex work occurs in your country? Prostitution? Escort services? Porn films? Webcams/subscription service? Phone sex? Stripping/peep shows? Other kinds?
-Are people generally supportive of sex work? Tolerant? Apathetic? Opposed? Do these attitudes apply to all forms of sex work or do they vary based on the work?
-What's the legality regarding sex work? Fully criminalized? Only partially? Decriminalized? Legalized and regulated? Is this all of sex work or only some forms?
-What's the gender ratio like? Do certain gender(s) dominate the work with only some others involved or is it more varied? What about the clientel? Largely certain gender(s) or more varied? What are the attitudes people have regarding the genders involved?
-Does sex work have any sort of strong cultural presence? Positive or negative, is it just work or is there some larger view regarding sex work?
-Are there any large pushes as of late to change sex work industry? Are people trying to decriminalize it or legalize it? Trying to criminalize or maybe just delegalize? Pushes for changes in how it operates or what can happen?
NS-based Role Play is volatile. People join and leave NS all the time and that extends to regions and their RP. Someone may join the map, be very active in RP, but one day leave, resulting in all their RP basically being nothing now. As such, it can't really be done to make any concrete timeline of DSA RP world history. However, we can think bigger and more loose and so we have Ages: general time periods that saw some sort of pattern.
These Ages are optional to be part of and are vague enough but specific enough to give players a lot of liberty. It can be fun to add on to the lore of these times, so we encourage you to have some RP in these times. Below are the Ages that the community agreed are fun to have. If you have some RP that fits into this period, put it in a dispatch or on the DSA Forums and share it with Student Loan Debt to have it be added to the list. If it's a long multi-player RP too much to copy down, write up a summary if you want.
Somewhere between the mid-1800s and early 1900s, wars were fought across the globe. Some were civil, some world-spanning. While specific span differs from scholar to scholar, this period is generally thought to have concluded with the establishment of the DSA Capital to serve as a diplomatic center for all nations
In our RP world of Delusia, players have a lot of choices, including what languages their nation have. Since we are not on Earth, that means that all languages get their own unique names. If you have a language that you want to be officially yours, send Student Loan Debt a telegram and he'll add it to the list.
You can choose a language that already exists on Earth or you can make up one of your own! You don't have to make a whole conlang for a made up one, you can just say it exists and we'll add it. You can claim multiple languages, but I recommend picking less spoken languages if you do that. It'd be unfair if one player controlled English, French, Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic, you know?
