The Colony of Zone 71 is a massive, efficient nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape, irreverence towards religion, and complete absence of social welfare. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 1.077 billion Zone 71ians enjoy some of the most opulent lifestyles in the region, unless they are unemployed or working-class, in which case they are variously starving to death or crippled by easily preventable diseases.

The tiny, liberal, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Education, and Public Transport. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 6.2%.

The all-consuming Zone 71ian economy, worth 86.8 trillion ration cards a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Gambling industry, with significant contributions from Automobile Manufacturing, Soda Sales, and Uranium Mining. Average income is 80,618 ration cards, but there is a large disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 326,873 per year while the poor average 13,235, a ratio of 24.7 to 1.

Vital intelligence-gathering activities are put on hold as agents return home for seduction training and advanced poker instruction, retirement homes are often fitted with luxurious suites, disability advocates are not amused that they are told to be dependent on Zone 71ians's kindness, and it is mandatory to learn evolution in schools. Crime, especially youth-related, is a serious problem, probably because of the absence of a police force. Zone 71's national animal is the eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution.

Zone 71 is ranked 15,062nd in the world and 676th in Lazarus for Largest Mining Sector, scoring 6,678.85 on the Blue Sky Asbestos Index.
