Personal Life

Marie met Alastair in 2002 at an outdoor coffee shop in New Hamletberg. Having recently completed her graduate degree in Wittenberg, Marie had returned to the northwest to be closer to her family. Her running into Alastair, then, had been by complete happenstance; he had been sitting a few tables away from her sipping coffee and smiling brightly. The two struck up a friendly conversation, exchanged phone numbers, and parted ways, promising to talk with one another later.

A few months into their friendship, they started dating. The two of them got married on 17 July, 2003, and Marie moved in with Alastair at Elsinore Palace. She adjusted well to being part of the Royal Family, especially considering Alastair's position meant she would inevitably become Queen. She grew close to her parents-in-law, but did not get to know Wilhelm for several years, as he had grown estranged from his family by the time Marie and Alastair married.

Their first child, Julia was born on 7 September, 2004; their son, Alastair, was born 1 April 2006. The two of them spent must of their time caring for and playing with their children. Alastair worked as a Parliament litigator, and Marie was primarily a stay-at-home mother and passive politician. If she noticed Alastair struggling with his drinking, she did not let on, at least not publicly, at the time. She has recently cited that she did try on multiple occasions to mitigate his consumption whenever she was with him, especially when their children were nearby. However, she did not see him as having a legitimate problem until the early 2010's.

While Marie had always been the more assertive of the two, she ended up becoming more dominant when Alastair's alcoholism began significantly affecting his daily life. Their relationship started becoming frayed when Alastair grew depressed and lethargic. Marie found herself having to pick up his slack, struggling to learn how to complete the duties they'd have to fulfill as monarchs while raising their children. Alastair would hardly leave bed, preferring to stare listlessly into space, not eating, not sleeping. Marie tried to console him and get him to work, but he'd snap at her; her resolve started to crumble, and she found herself intentionally avoiding him. Years later, she'd recognize this behavioral pattern as a sort of coping mechanism that allowed her to deny what their lives were becoming.

There was only so much she could do to keep him at bay except stick by his side. Over time, she became an enabler of sorts, and now she was watching him deteriorate. She did her best to force him to get dressed, go to work; she did not, however, monitor his drinking as much as she should have. Her main goal was to keep him moving, to get him back on his feet. The last thing she wanted was for him to become dependent on her. But he was acting more erratically, going on late-night drives and drinking sprees, stealing, hiding things. It got to a point where Marie, alongside her parents-in-law and Wilhelm, had to practically physically restrain Alastair so he wouldn't continue harming himself.

When Alastair got arrested for a DUI, he called Marie. She was more than willing to help, of course, but she was so horrorstricken and flabbergasted that she hardly knew what to do with herself. Yet the task of dealing with the aftermath of Alastair's arrest still fell to her.

She believed his taking a leave of absence would be enough to restore his spirits. He was prescribed antidepressants, put in therapy. She believed he was getting better and was returning to his old self, and she expressed great relief. Their marital relationship rebounded, and they welcomed their daughter Hildegard on 28 May 2015.

Marie became more of an emotional crutch for Alastair when his father was diagnosed with a brain tumor. As Alastair took up the mantle of running the country, Marie took up the mantle of Alastair's mental health troubles. His alcohol abuse grew into something far beyond what Marie could mitigate, and it only became worse as his father deteriorated. Marie had to hide her own pain for Alastair's sake, had to convince him she was simply incredibly worried, nothing more.

Marie continued to suppress her anxieties as the world plummeted into crisis during 2020. She instead tried to help Alastair and the rest of Cabinet figure out how to prevent COVID-19 from infecting their people. Things only got worse for her when King Alastair III died; Alastair's addiction spiraled out of control, and her anxiety went through the roof. But she was too concerned about her husband's health to focus on herself.

Her relationship with Alastair soured: she was spending all of her time monitoring him, yelling at him, forcing him to stop drinking. She grew resentful of him and his behavior. It was apparent in her demeanor, in her efforts to shield their children from his self-destruction.
