Random facts.

These facts are ones I wrote for forum threads, usually for FN&I, but sometimes for other forums as well. They have loose canon.

There are a few immigrants of Bigtopian descent, but their ancestors arrived here 100+ years ago and they've assimilated. They consider themselves Voxijan, and are "just ethnically" Bigtopian.

We don't like communism, as communism/socialism is viewed as a way to make the economy tank. Communists aren't persecuted, because freedom of speech and thought is a thing in our nation. Dirty Commies.

Sci-fi, modern or fantasy? Modern.
Tolerant of other races and cultures or xenophobic? Tolerant.
Open or closed Borders? Open borders.
Free trade or no free trade? Free trade.
Overseas manufacturing or local manufacturing? Usually local manufacturing, may sometimes import luxury items.
Communism/socialism or capitalism? Capitalism.
Federal or centralist government? Somehow... both?
Religious or secular? Secular.
Diplomatic or militaristic? Diplomatic.
Homosexuality is a right or sin? Right.

A popular and very Voxijan conspiracy theory is that the last president, Bixenta Agirre is actually a male-to-female trans woman who was assigned male at birth. When Bixenta heard about this conspiracy theory, she released her birth certificate, and her gender on the birth certificate was female. However, jerks, mostly dumb transphobes and leftist people who think it would be cool for the president to be trans*, think Agirre forged her birth certificate.

Of course, some political extremists think the Jews are behind everything.

What percentage of the population do women make up? 51.8%.
What is the perception of women in society? Women are seen as equals to men in most areas, and superior to men in areas that involve diplomacy/human relations.
What clothes are women expected to wear? Women wear clothes. Women are not *expected* to wear flattering clothes, but beauty standards are a thing in Voxija.
Are women expected to wear make-up or cosmetics? No, but the majority of women still do because it makes them look prettier.
Do women usually hold a job? Yes.
If so, what kind of jobs? Women have almost every job that men have. Women are more represented than men in jobs like teacher, nurse, salesperson, etc.
Are there any jobs that women are barred from legally? HELL NO.
Are there any jobs that have recently allowed women? Is the eighties recent? Because women have been conscripted into the army since the eighties.
What is the public opinion of women holding jobs? Extremely favorable.

Alternate history: becomes a Spanish colony.

In real life, when Spain conquered Voxija, we had a war of indepence and shed the Spanish influence within several years.
In this timeline, the Spanish general Gonzalez would have beat the Voxijans. He would probably have become the governor of Voxija, an imperial colony of Spain (man, I hate writing those words).
Voxija would likely have remained a Spanish colony until either 1780 or 1810, when, citing Washington/Bolivar as influences, would rebel again. Spain would either win the war, or lose. If Voxija wins this war of independence, we would have existed in a tenuous state, an island desired by foreign powers. In both timelines, Voxija gets conquered by the British eventually.
Voxija would have gained independence peacefully, around the same time as Australia/New Zealand. Voxija would have become a trilingual state, speaking Voxi, Spanish, English, and maybe some Basque. Voxija would have a similar standard of living as Australia and New Zealand, or it would be poverty-stricken.

Alternate history: keeps the absolute monarchy.

In real life, the monarchy peacefully abdicated and Voxija became a republic in 1919. What if this wasn't so?
The monarchy would probably have continued the rather authoritarian backward policies it was infamous for. The fascist insurgent Ekaitz Larregi probably would have amassed more followers, and killed more people, than in our timeline. The monarch would have handled these fascists very harshly, but they probably would have risen again later in this alternate history. Voxijan insurgent movements have a tendency to rise up again when crushed harshly.
After World War II, the monarchy would probably been scrapped or changed into a constitutional monarchy. Voxijans have their values.

Alternate history: joins Allies in World War II.

In real life, Voxija stayed neutral in World War II, being close to Australia and Japanese territories.
If Voxija had joined the Allies in World War II, we would have helped Australia/the British Empire beat back the Japanese forces. Voxija, in contrast to our timeline, would most likely have accepted Jewish refugees from the Holocaust, having a history of taking immigrants and refugees in our timeline. In real life, Voxija did not accept the refugees, as we did not want to upset delicate trade agreements with both the Axis and the Allies.

Alternate History: Larregi takes over the government.

Supposedly haunted places are very rare in Voxija, but one place that is said to be haunted is a computer station in Classroom 107 in Xirroni University. It is said a student was working on her (the ghost is indeed said to be a woman) class assignment when her uncle came in the middle of class to call her to go somewhere important. Where and for what reason depends on the teller. It is said the student dies in a car crash and came back to haunt the computer. Today, college students joke about having a class in Classroom 107, but no one is fool enough to sit at that specific seat...

A guide for tourists in Voxija

Don't jaywalk. Not only will the rarely seen Voxijan oligarch run you over with a German car, Voxijans just don't do that, probably because rarely seen Voxijan oligarchs will run them over with German cars.

Don't wear a Che Guevara shirt. The Argentinian revolutionary has been hated ever since famous Voxijan activist Ander Gebara publicly denounced him.

Don't ask if Voxija is liberal. While this won't make the asker a social pariah, it will garner the confusing response "What kind do you mean?" Americans have trouble with this a lot.

Don't talk about politics. Voxijan politics stays in Voxija.

Don't carry a gun where Voxijans can see. While open-carry is technically permitted in Voxija, no one does that, and most people who carry a gun put it in their purse or anywhere else no one will see. Voxijans will look at you (and know you are American).

Don't tip too much. Actually, if you tip over 10%, the Voxijan wait-staff assume the idiot tourist thinks they're underpaid. They aren't.

Don't refrain from tipping. However, you should tip a small amount, from 5 to 10%. This is very confusing for European tourists, who are hated for never tipping.

Don't go to Bilvao. Bilvao is full of con artists that will scam tourists. Surprisingly, tourists still go to Bilvao, probably because of the beaches.

Don't insult Txala Enterprises/say it should be state-owned. Txala Enterprises is the biggest company in Voxija, and most Voxijans have favorable opinion of it, at least as favorable as one can have for any company.

Don't express hatred for Voxija. Voxijans are generally patriotic. This is because Voxija was neutral during the Second World War, so they didn't experience the horrors of fascism, either by being invaded, fighting against it, or having a fascist government. Also, it's a paradox. If you hate Voxija so much, why go there?

Don't call Voxijans Basques or say they speak Basque. Please don't. This is the worst faux pas any tourist can make in Voxija, even worse than loaning someone money in Bilvao. Please no.

An average Voxijan is roughly three quarters Viñak and one quarter European Basque. Your average Voxijan would have lost their virginity in their late teens, usually in the army. Your average Voxijan is a happy, well-adjusted human being with a great home life

Moral Dilemmas
Will an average citizen kill one person to save five? Maybe, but after agonizing for a long long time.
- If no, will they do it if they were making someone else kill them? Probably, after some agonizing.
Will they sacrifice themselves to save 2 others? Yes.
If they had to kill one of two people, and one is begging to be killed to save the other, which will they kill? The one that is begging to die.
If an endangered animal was about to kill a citizen, would they kill the animal? Most likely.
- If no, what if a person of high authority was getting attacked? That doesn't matter.
- if yes, what if the animal was an endling? No.
If a person who saved 2 lives before was trying to kill someone, would they allow it? No.
- If yes, what if they only saved one persons? n/a
- If no, how many people would they have to save beforehand to get allowance? Even if the potential murder had prevented omnicide, a Voxijan would still call the police/intervene in some other way.

When I was creating this nation, I took the Basque flag and rolled with it. For creating the finer aspects of Voxija's history and culture, I drew traits from many countries, including Mexico (a lot), American history (war for independence!), First American culture (mostly the Viñak), Switzerland (neutral), Nordic countries (socially progressive), NS issues (the Order of Violet, the UN being called the World Assembly), my own ideology, what I think is a utopia, and of course Australia. There are way too many inspirations to list here, since I just took what looked cool from history and mashed it into a culture soup.

If the entire population of Voxija got enrolled in Hogwarts, 29% would be Hufflepuff, 26% would be Ravenclaw, 25% would be Slytherin, and only 20% would be Gryffindor.

I tried to come up with a nation name that had the rarest consonants possible that was still pronounceable.

There aren't any statues of the current leader, Etor Gurraniz, in Voxija, nor of any president besides the first one, Ander Gebaxani.

There are, however, many statues of the kings and queens of Voxija's past, and they can be found in a lot of cities.

Voxija is mostly phlegmatic with some sanguine leanings.

Voxija would never split up; the last time Voxija broke apart was in the 17th century due to a succession dispute. If Voxija did break apart, it would be in ethnic lines or urban/rural. Both of which would result in the same borders. Voxija wouldn't split according to the borders of the provinces, since they are artificial.

Report filed at the offices of Alpha Forces

Date: 2019-???

Operation name: Zombie Weaponization Project
Performed by: Alpha Forces
Target: Conscripted young adults, some volunteers, some not.
Reason: After the zombie outbreak of 2019, the option arose of reverse engineering the zombie plague to eventually use it as a weapon. To achieve that end, Alpha Forces leaders began experimenting on Voxijan conscripts, trying to activate the planned end results of turning the zombie plague off and on remotely, making the zombie plague non-contagious, and figuring out how to make zombies think.
Total number of victims: 450+ soldiers experimented on, so far. 1 town of 1500 people that had fallen victim to the zombie plague and had to be culled.
Final result of the operation (mark one of the following options with an X):
[]Success []Failure [x]Other: (still occurring)
Public statements: Voxijan government personnel have been working overtime to turn the zombie virus into cures for illnesses. Our brave young conscripts have volunteered for this duty to our public health. Do not worry if you see zombified humans near a military base, they are just there to help trusty government scientists find a cure for cancer.

Voxijans usually dream in color, and it is very unusual for a sleeping Voxijan never to dream at all.

Foreign terrorist attacks don't often occur in Voxija, since Voxija is small, low-profile, and there's little reason to attack it. The terrorist attacks that do happen in Voxija are perpetuated by domestic groups like the Society for Viñak Heritage.

In Vetxirrovo Province, there is a small pond where in the early afternoon during bug season, the light hits the pond so a viewer can see an image of the Virgin Mary on the bottom of the pond. This pond has become a moderately popular pilgrimage site for Voxijan Catholics and interested tourists, although very few people outside Voxija know about it.

If people in the real world could manipulate the four classical elements like in Avatar: the Last Airbender, Voxijans would mostly be Waterbenders.
