The Republic of Vetalia is a gargantuan, efficient nation, renowned for its daily referendums, anti-smoking policies, and suspicion of poets. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic, humorless population of 26.733 billion Vetalians are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The minute, pro-business government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Healthcare. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Vetalia City. Income tax is unheard of.

The frighteningly efficient Vetalian economy, worth a remarkable 7,879 trillion Rubles a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Information Technology industry, with significant contributions from Book Publishing, Retail, and Uranium Mining. Average income is an amazing 294,741 Rubles, but there is a significant disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 949,512 per year while the poor average 69,245, a ratio of 13.7 to 1.

Every day has been a surprise since weather reporters turned to consulting ancient totems for their seven-day forecasts, both illness and poverty are seen as signs of low moral worth, it turns out that money can buy you happiness, and the nation's soldiers sleep four to a bed in order to use space economically. Crime is totally unknown. Vetalia's national animal is the Vetalian Gazelle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

Vetalia is ranked 23,556th in the world and 15th in Gholgoth for Most Developed, scoring 72.05 on the Human Development Index.
