Vaxn (Vaxni: Ваzн, tr. Vaxn), officially the Federal Republic of Vaxn (Vaxni: Fеdерална Репуbлика Ваzн, tr. Federalna Republika Vaxn), is a sovereign nation distinguished by its unique geographical composition situated within the subtropical expanse of The Western Isles. The country encompasses three primary landmasses—the expansive Vatra Island, the mountainous Natav Island, and the relatively smaller Xaba Island—alongside smaller island territories that collectively contribute to the diverse topography of the region. Positioned to the east of Scantarbia, Vaxn's geographical isolation rendered it one of the final frontiers for human settlement.

The prolonged isolation of Vaxn has culminated in the development of a distinctive biodiversity, characterised by unique animal, fungal, and plant species. The country's topographical features, including sharp mountain peaks like the Natavruch, are attributed to tectonic uplift and historical volcanic activities. Sterkinsk, the capital city, serves as the economic and administrative hub, reflecting the nation's historical and contemporary significance. Meanwhile, Grotsvski, the most populous city, pulsates with vibrant energy, with many places famous for cultural and urban tourism.

Vaxn operates as a federal republic, in which a chancellor oversees executive functions, ensuring policy implementation and effective governance. The Federal Assembly, consisting of the Federation Senate and State Council, represents federated states and the broader populace. This bicameral structure promotes comprehensive legislation, considering both federal and local perspectives. The nation's governance prioritises representation, accountability, and individual rights. Vaxn's thriving economy aligns with democratic socialist values, balancing entrepreneurship with collective welfare. Economic success is widely shared, evident in the low gini coefficient, showcasing minimal wealth disparity.

Vaxn's diversified industries, including information technology, sustainable fish farming, and tourism, contribute to its economic prowess. The IT sector drives innovation globally, sustainable fish farming reflects environmental responsibility, and tourism capitalises on the nation's rich offerings. Vaxn's commitment to economic equality, social justice, and sustainable development underscores its holistic approach to governance and prosperity.

Etymology
Dosh settlers refrained from assigning a specific collective name to the entire group of islands, and a similar practice was observed among the Natav and Xaba people. The islands, now encompassed within modern-day Vaxn, were generically referred to as the Great Islands or "Gapua Botau" in the Natav language (Vaxni: Гапуа Ботав). However, despite the absence of an overarching name for the entire archipelago, the settlers and indigenous populations officially designated names to the individual territories they inhabited.

These territories, namely Grotsvski, Telinsk, Tsvet, Natav, and Xaba, were given official names that have persisted through time. Even today, these regions are still recognised and referred to by their original names, preserving the historical and cultural identity of each distinct area within the broader expanse of the Vaxn archipelago.

Officially, Vaxn is derived from the shortened version of Vatra, Xaba, and Natav. However, beyond being a mere abbreviation, research conducted by historian Sidan Pachnor-Abadzhiev from the University of Grotsvski has provided a more intricate understanding. According to this study, the name Vaxn translates to 'clear skies' in the ancient Natav spoken language, predating the divergence of Xaba people.

The naming process involved a debate among the founding figures of the state. Initially, there was consideration of naming the federation based on Dosh culture, but this plan was abandoned. The shift occurred as major Natav and Xaba figures, influential in the Red Movement, played a key role in shaping the content of the Peace Pact of 1950.

History
Early history

Vaxn's rich historical account unfolds from the 8th century, as documented in the annals of Natav writings. The Natav people, deeply entrenched in maritime traditions, embarked on their settlement journey along the coastal regions, forging an intimate connection with the sea. Relying on fishery as a primary means of sustenance, they harnessed the benefits of the fertile soil, enriched by the natural fertilisers from the depths of the Natavruch volcano. This harmonious coexistence with the land and sea laid the foundational ethos for Natav civilisation, shaping their unique way of life and ecological practices. The Natav's sustainable practices and resource utilisation exemplified a profound understanding of their environment. The Natavruch volcano, a symbolic force in their lives, not only provide essential nutrients to the soil but also became an emblematic source of vitality for the Natav people. As custodians of their natural surroundings, the Natav community's intimate relationship with the land and sea fostered a resilient and enduring cultural identity that would echo through the centuries, leaving an indelible mark on the unfolding narrative of Vaxn's history.

Xaba divergence and Dosh arrival

Approximately 800 years following the inception of Natav civilisation, Dosh sailors embarked on a pivotal expedition from Osiris, making landfall on the island. Concurrently, tribal conflicts within the Natav community precipitated a cultural schism, compelling the Xaba people to undertake a migration to a neighbouring island, where they began shaping their respective unique traditions, namely the Xaba naming customs. Meanwhile, the Dosh settlers, initially focused on trade endeavours, gradually transitioned into permanent settlements on the Vatra Island. This period marked a transformative phase characterised by the gradual and harmonious assimilation process of diverse cultural elements. The coexistence of Dosh communes, Natav tribes, and Xaba communities catalysed an era of increased interaction and shared experiences. The Vatra Island, becoming a melting pot of cultural influences, witnessed the convergence of distinct traditions, fostering a vibrant and dynamic social setting. The synergistic interplay of these diverse cultural threads laid the groundwork for the multicultural identity that would define the evolving narrative of Vaxn's history.

Emergence of leaderships
Away from the Vatra Island, the Natav and Xaba people established governance structures known as the rucuan (Vaxni: ручуан) on their respective islands. These tribal systems served as the foundation for community organisation, reflecting the unique values and traditions of each group. Simultaneously, on the vast Vatra Island, the Dosh settlers initiated the formation of three distinct leadership entities—Tsvet, Grotsvski, and Telinsk. This multifaceted leadership landscape contributed to the complex societal development on the Vatra Island, allowing for a rich plethora of cultural interactions and influences. However, the diversity in leadership structures also brought forth challenges, leading to internal conflicts and power struggles. The decline of trade and constraints on mobility exacerbated these tensions, creating a volatile environment that ultimately erupted into civil wars toward the end of the 19th century. These conflicts, shaped by a myriad of cultural, economic, and political factors, marked a tumultuous period in Vaxn's history, significantly impacting the trajectory of its social and political evolution.

Peace Pact of 1950
The aftermath of the civil wars in the late 19th century plunged Vaxn into an extended period of economic decline, a challenging era that persisted until the 1940s. The socio-economic struggles faced by the nation were further compounded by the complexities arising from the intricate cultural mosaic and diverse leadership structures. It was against this backdrop that the Red Movement (Vaxni: Червено Dвижение, tr. Cerveno Dvizhenie), under the charismatic leadership of Pyotr "Pet" Gazmanov and five other major figures, emerged as a pivotal force for transformative change. The movement exerted significant pressure on the fractured Vatra Island leaders, ultimately culminating in the signing of a historic Peace Pact. This landmark agreement marked the turning point in Vaxn's history, laying the groundwork for the formal establishment of the state of Vaxn. Comprising five federated states, each with its unique cultural heritage and governance structure, the nascent federation sought to reconcile the diverse elements within its borders. As a symbol of unity, a neutral ground was chosen to be the federal capital with the name of Sterkinsk, paying homage to Sterk Yaseyase, the revered Natav spiritual teacher who, tragically, succumbed to illness in the aftermath of the prolonged conflict. The designation of Sterkinsk as the capital underscored the nation's commitment to healing, reconciliation, and the pursuit of a shared destiny.

Geography

Vaxn comprises three main landmasses—Vatra Island, Natav Island, and Xaba Island—alongside smaller territories. Vaxn's extended isolation has led to the development of a unique biodiversity, featuring rare animal, fungal, and plant species. The country's topographical characteristics, such as the sharp mountain peaks like the Natavruch, are a result of tectonic uplift and historical volcanic activities.

Beyond its main landmasses, Vaxn boasts smaller island territories contributing to its rich geographical diversity. Notably, Natav Island holds cultural significance with its pristine landscapes, while Xaba Island showcases unique ecological features. These islands, combined with the Vatra Island, create a mosaic of ecosystems that have evolved in isolation, fostering distinct flora and fauna.

Climate
Vaxn's location east of Scantarbia across the Aplin Strait highlights its geographical distinctiveness and influences its climate. Its subtropical positioning results in a temperate climate, influenced by coastal and inland landscapes that contribute to varying climatic conditions. This interplay of geography, climate, and biodiversity makes Vaxn a compelling subject for its natural environment.

Biodiversity and conservation
For 80 million years, Vaxn's geographic isolation and island biogeography have shaped the evolution of its diverse species. This physical isolation has resulted in a unique ecological landscape with distinctive plants and animals. While originally thought to have originated from Osiris, recent evidence suggests species resulted from dispersal.

Approximately 76% of Vaxn's indigenous vascular plants are endemic, with over 1,788 species. Indigenous animals include reptiles, frogs, spiders, insects, and snails. Some, like the duadasa, are considered living fossils. Marine mammals are abundant in Vaxn waters, with a diverse range of cetaceans and fur seals. The country is also home to numerous seabirds and penguin species.

Since human arrival, almost a quarter of Vaxn's vertebrate species have become extinct or endangered. Conservation efforts, including island sanctuaries, pest control, and wildlife translocation, aim to protect and recover threatened wildlife.

Administrative divisions
Vaxn is geographically divided into six administrative regions, consisting of one special capital territory and five states (two of which are specifically referred to as rucuan). The capital city, Sterkinsk, is situated in the Sterkinsk Capital Region (Vaxni: Столичен регион Стеркинск, tr. Stolichen region Sterkinsk), commonly referred to as SRS. The remaining five administrative regions include the states Grotsvski, Tsvet, and Telinsk on Vatra Island, rucuan Natav on Natav Island, and rucuan Xaba on Xaba Island. Each of these regions is governed by a governor, locally known as "lanaha" (Vaxni: ланаха). The term "lanaha" initially belonged exclusively to the rucuan leaders of Natav and Xaba. However, it gained national recognition when officially embraced as a part of the Natav Language Revival Movement (Vaxni: Dвижение за вузражdане на Натавския език, tr. Dvizhenie za vuzrazhdane na Natavskiya ezik) in 1975, becoming the universally accepted term for regional governors across Vaxn.

The role of a lanaha is crucial in overseeing the administration and governance of their respective regions. These governors are elected through a democratic process every five years, and they are limited to serving only one term in their lifetime. This approach aims to encourage diverse leadership and prevent the concentration of power within a single individual. Lanaha play a pivotal role in representing the interests of their constituents, implementing regional policies, and contributing to the overall development and well-being of their communities. Their elected status ensures a connection between local governance and the broader democratic framework of Vaxn.

Government and politics
Vaxn follows a federal republic system with a governance structure emphasising democratic principles. The country's official head of state is the president, a ceremonial position currently occupied by Haydius Dapwuv. In contrast, the pivotal role of leading the government lies with the chancellor, presently Gixon Tixapunadav. Notably, Chancellor Tixapunadav is Vaxn's second-ever chancellor with Xaba heritage, bringing diverse perspectives to the leadership. The chancellor assumes executive responsibilities, overseeing policy implementation and ensuring the government's effective operation. This governance model maintains a delicate balance of powers among the legislative, executive, and judicial branches to uphold democratic ideals.

The legislature, known as the Federal Assembly, consists of two houses: the Federation Senate and the State Council. The Senate, as the upper house, plays a critical role in representing the interests of the federated states within Vaxn. It serves as a forum for deliberation on national policies, contributing to the shaping of legislation that impacts the entire federation. The lower house, the State Council, represents the broader population, with members elected to advocate for the diverse needs and perspectives of the citizens. This bicameral structure ensures a comprehensive and inclusive approach to legislation, with both federal and local considerations taken into account.

To uphold the principles of justice and ensure the rule of law, Vaxn has a robust judiciary currently led by Chief Justice Ivan Marinov. The judiciary, independent of the legislative and executive branches, plays a crucial role in interpreting laws, settling disputes, and safeguarding the constitutional rights of citizens. The judiciary system seeks to uphold the highest standards of legal integrity, contributing to the nation's commitment to a fair and just society. Together, these political institutions form the foundation of Vaxn's governance, fostering a system that prioritises representation, accountability, and the protection of individual rights.

Economy

Vaxn's robust and thriving economy is not only characterised by impressive economic indicators but also by its commitment to democratic socialist values. Governed by principles that prioritise both economic prosperity and social equity, Vaxn's economic system reflects a democratic socialist framework that seeks to balance individual entrepreneurship with collective well-being. The government actively engages in policies that promote social welfare, accessible healthcare, and quality education, ensuring that the benefits of economic growth are widely shared among the populace.

One of the notable features of Vaxn's economic landscape is its commendable income distribution, reflected in a low gini coefficient. This indicates minimal disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest segments of the population, highlighting a commitment to fostering economic equality and social inclusivity. This is believed to be the direct result of the nation's economic policies which prioritise balanced growth, allowing citizens to share in the benefits of Vaxn's economic success.

Vaxn's economic strength lies in its diverse sectors: information technology, sustainable fish farming, and tourism. The nation leads in cutting-edge IT solutions, fostering innovation, and practising eco-friendly fish farming. The tourism industry capitalises on Vaxn's iconic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and cultural attractions, drawing global visitors. Vaxn's commitment to balancing economic prosperity with social justice guides its path toward sustainable development.

Port Romin, in Telinsk, is a pivotal trade hub handling almost 8 million TEU annually. Its strategic location in the global supply chain facilitates efficient trade connections. Equipped with advanced technology, Port Romin ensures seamless movement of goods, contributing significantly to regional development and economic growth. Positioned on key shipping routes, Port Romin enhances Telinsk's influence in global trade networks, establishing it as a prominent player in the international trade landscape. Port Romin exemplifies Telinsk's commitment to fostering economic prosperity and active participation in the interconnected global marketplace.

Demographics
Population and size growth
As of the 2022 census, Vaxn sustains a population of around 12,567,310 individuals. Within this demographic tapestry, the largest ethnic group is of Dosh heritage, comprising approximately 57.4% of the total population. Following closely are the Natav people, constituting 31.5% of Vaxn's inhabitants, while the Xaba population makes up 9.4%. The remaining percentage encompasses individuals of unspecified ethnicities, with a notable presence of second-generation immigrants from outside Vaxn.

Vaxn's demographic composition reflects its commitment to diversity and inclusivity, embracing a multicultural identity shaped by the coexistence of various ethnic backgrounds. Despite the prominent influence of the Dosh, Natav, and Xaba communities, the nation values and respects the contributions of all residents, fostering an environment of cultural richness and mutual understanding.

Remarkably, Vaxn maintains a stable population growth, a testament to the effectiveness of a well-organised state-sponsored birth control program. This initiative underscores the government's commitment to responsible population management, ensuring sustainable growth that aligns with the nation's socio-economic development goals.

Languages and education
Vaxn government recognises three official languages: Vaxni, Natav, and Vaxn Sign Language (locally known as vazhezik). Vaxni, being the most prevalent language, boasts an impressive fluency rate of nearly 99.9%, a testament to the government's dedicated literacy programs implemented since the inception of Vaxn. Despite the long historical divergence of the Xaba populace from the Natav people, particularly on the original Natav Island, their language has retained a remarkable degree of similarity. Linguistics experts contend that it can be considered a dialect of Natav rather than a completely distinct language. This linguistic connection has served as a significant impetus behind the government's previous initiatives to preserve and document the Natav language. The commitment to linguistic diversity is underscored by the requirement that all official government communications, documents, and public facilities include captions or explanations in Vaxni and Natav languages.

The importance of language accessibility is further emphasised by the incorporation of Vaxn Sign Language into the education system. Mandated as a compulsory subject from elementary school, proficiency in Vaxn Sign Language becomes a valuable skill, especially during state-sanctioned events like national TV news broadcasts and televised parliamentary debates. This inclusive approach reflects Vaxn's commitment to ensuring communication accessibility for all citizens, including those with hearing impairments.

Vaxn places a strong emphasis on education, with the majority of Vaxni adults completing their 15 years of free basic education. A remarkable 66.7% of Vaxni adults also pursue higher education, contributing to the nation's reputation as one of the premier educational hubs in The Western Isles region. This commitment to education underscores Vaxn's vision for a knowledgeable and skilled populace, driving the nation's progress and success.

Culture and faith
Vaxn's religious landscape is characterised by diversity, with a significant majority of the population opting not to affiliate with any particular religion. That being said, according to a 2022 census, among the 17% who do identify with religious beliefs, traditional Sapaism and the indigenous Natav/Xaba faith stand out as predominant choices, contributing to the country's rich spiritual diversity. In addition, smaller communities of Christians, Muslims, Jews, and Buddhists can be found practising their faith within the nation, although their prevalence is relatively minor. This eclectic mix of beliefs reflects the inclusive and tolerant nature of Vaxn's society.

The cultural diversity extends to naming traditions, reflecting the historical and cultural roots of the populace. The Dosh majority, connected by common Slavic Doshian heritage, follows a prevalent patrilineal naming tradition, marked by institutionalised family names known as "yasba" (Vaxni: ȷасbа). This practice encompasses distinguished surnames like Sebas, Parudiop, and Dosur. The Natav population, rooted in similar cultural practices, also adheres to a parallel patrilineal naming pattern.

In contrast, the Xaba population, having historically diverged from Natav cultural practices, embraces a matrilineal naming custom. In this tradition, there is no utilisation of yasba, and a child's second name is derived from their mother's given name. The suffixes "adav" (indicating son of) or "ede" (indicating daughter of) are added accordingly. An exemplar of this naming convention is observed in the current Chancellor of Vaxn, Gixon Tixapunadav, signifying "Gixon, son of Tixapun."
