History of the Soviet Union

Soviet history remains the same as IRL up until 1975 when the Soviet military couped the Soviet government due to the said government causing relations between the Warsaw Pact and NATO to get so bad that the world was on the edge of WW3. The military junta in charge immediately went to work meeting with western leaders to ease tensions between East and West. In March 1976, enacted a new Constitution remaking the Soviet Union as a multiparty parliamentary democracy under the name of the Union of Soviet Sovereign Republics or the Soviet Union for short. All Communist Party leadership was put on trial and executed for their crimes while the party itself was disbanded. Environmental laws based on the Clean Water and Air Acts in the US were enacted starting to clean up the mess the Communists left. The new government adopted free market capitalism for the Soviet economy and the military was made volunteer only professional force based on the US model with assistance in training from the United States. Over the next 20 years, the nations of eastern Europe one by one joined NATO after democratic with the Soviet Union joining in 1996. Now a thriving democracy with the third largest economy in the world, the USSR and the rest of NATO faced a growing threat in the People's Republic of China, North Korea and Iran.
