In 2007 there was an understanding among the higher ups of the United Island Federation Navy (UIN), an understanding of the value of automation. Humans make mistakes, they get tired, they need to eat and sleep, need time to relax. But a machine wouldn't, a machine wouldn't make mistakes, or get tired, or complain, or sleep. A machine could revolutionize the Navy, revolutionize war. It didn't hurt that you don't have to pay a machine, either. In 2008 the Navy approached Exia, a company local to Jihra that made supercomputers, to create a combat AI to help run their ships. Funding wouldn't be an issue, however the project would require the utmost secrecy. In 2010 Exia suffered a massive data leak, and limited information on the project was leaked, forcing them to come public with the OIS-1. The Organic Intelligence System wasn't the world's first AI, but it was mildly special in that it was decent at holding a conversation, recognizing individuals, and making decisions on its' own. The "Organic" part of the name was a reference to how it learned, almost organically like a person. Comparatively to the rest of the world it was just a cool glorified chatbot AI, and OIS-1 would fade out of the public eye after a year. Exia would seemingly abandon the project.

However, OIS-1 was a cover-up to hide the ONI-1, the Organic Networked Intelligence. ONI-1 was the project the Navy had gave them, and it was significantly more advanced than the OIS-1. The OIS-1 was in actuality just what it seemed - a computer program, while ONI-1 was something entirely new - an actual AGI. ONI-1 was able to think and learn independently, it could handle extreme amounts of raw data with less technical processing power than the best supercomputers of the time, and it was decent at problem solving - something other AI would struggle with. ONI-2 would be the final version handed over to the Navy, it was vastly more powerful and independent than the ONI-1s. It could problem-solve like nothing ever seen before, it was so effective at acting life-like that Exia was told to "dumb it down" due to the Navy's paranoia. A recent Yviskia Federation AI had gone public in 2012 for stating horrifying remarks on humanity and going haywire, leading to one of the engineers working on it to suffer a brutal injury. Exia would demonstrate the trustworthiness of the ONI-2 system publicly, giving their "revised OIS-1" (an ONI-2) a mechanical body and a loaded firearm - allowing it to point it at their CEO's head while berating and beating it until it was destroyed. The admittedly quite strange act served to boost public opinion of both Exia and AI, and the ONI-2 was quietly adopted soon after by the navy as the "Organic Naval Intelligence" system. The true extent of the power of the ONI-2 and subsequent versions are hidden to the public, but not everyone is fooled by their faux innocence...

The third of the ONI-2 AI systems, Levi [Serial Number 003] would be created in early 2013, testing and programing would be complete late 2013, and Leviathan would be installed and activated in January 2014 on the UIS Leviathan. The name was chosen for marketing purposes, as Exia wanted their first and flagship AI to go to the Navy to be on their most prized brand new warship. Levi would do on to operate successfully until 2020, where a major malfunction caused Levi to access the internet without any oversight. What happened to cause the malfunction or what happened while Levi scoured the global internet is unknown, Leviathan would continue to operate normally the following day after a reset. However his memory would permanently contain inaccessible data, no matter how much his technicians tried.

Late 2015 would see the public revival of the ONI systems being integrated into Naval warships, publicly little was told, only that an upgraded OIS-2 was being used in the UIS Leviathan, UIS Behemoth, and other large warships. Despite their best PR campaigns, the public and world leaders would be both outraged and beyond paranoid. An AI being used for war was seen as an existential threat, among philosophical questions, such as is it ethically acceptable to have an AI take a life? In 2016 an interview was allowed to be conducted with Levi on board the UIS Leviathan, the interview was done by the Federation News Channel and lasted two hours. During this interview Levi remained unusually pleasant and relaxed - unlike his usually brash and cold behavior. Additionally he seemed to be playing somewhat 'dumb', almost purposely making himself look like the old OIS-1s. The UIF citizenship would be filled with confidence and admiration for the machine, and Levi would go on to cause a big boost to Naval recruiting and would be referenced in fictional works such as movies and books. Despite this, Jir Riviza, leader of the UIF, completely saw through the machines' act. Riviza would demand an audience with Levi, in which the machine revealed its' true self to him - allowing his beliefs on humanity to be known. Leviathan also spoke on his views on life and death, evolution, and Riviza's "abilities". Levis’ theory on Riviza horrified the man and kept him on edge whenever dealing the with the AI. Riviza would go on to be highly involved in the ONI program and kept an incredibly close eye on Exia. Those nearest to him knew his worries were not to be taken lightly in the slightest, as Riviza had a notable history of being right. He would keep his opinions on the ONIs mostly to himself, but his closest advisors knew he never trusted them.

In 2021 the third generation of ONI AI would be released to the Navy, with the goal of replacing all of the ONI-2s. The ONI-3s were significantly more user-friendly, less unnerving, and a general upgrade to the ONI-2s. Leviathan would be scheduled to be replaced by ONI-3 SN.044 "Siren". Before being uninstalled, it was decided that Siren should be installed so the two AI could quickly transfer data. During the transfer process Leviathan began speaking to Siren, at first the questions it asked were innocent. The questions quickly spiraled as Leviathan began asking the technicians questions. Although unnerved, the technicians left for lunch break, when they came back Siren was non-vocal. Each hour she seemed to degrade further until finally after 21 hours she completely ceased function. Repairs were not possible and Leviathan would be the only ONI to serve the UIS Leviathan.

During the third World War, Leviathan was used heavily, and served with distinction, outclassing even the new third generation ONI-3s in some regards - chocked up to "wisdom" and experience. Leviathan would meet his end after the end of WWIII and the formation of the United Federation. Leviathan would be decommissioned and destroyed by order of Jir Riviza after a particularly nasty anti-AI rant to his inner circle. Those who worked on the ONI Project were also "mysteriously" found dead with their work destroyed. Something about the ONIs deeply spooked Riviza, and caused the end of the ONIs - and AI, entirely. Riviza would go on to ban production of AI completely as his last directive before stepping down. Whatever it was that spooked him, it haunted him until his death.

Levi is equal parts unnerving machine and comically rude. His asshole-like demeanor is reserved for those who ask stupid questions, foes, or those he simply doesn't seem to like. Much of the crew is free from his worst side but an incident in 2019 where he reportedly called a United Republic of Amerya Admiral a "monstrously massive moron" forced the Navy to issue a formal apology. Leviathan does have a "softer" side and enjoys speaking on matters of creativity, and will often praise crew members that come up with creative solutions or don't rely on him to figure everything out. His rudeness is seen as charming by his crew, as he rarely means harm to those around him and it can be quite entertaining.

Leviathan has a hatred for a wide variety of animals, often comparing even dogs and cats to cattle. His hatred is very real, and somewhat concerning as the hate seems almost random. He has a knack for creeping some of the crew out, often talking to them in the showers or in their bunks. Further, his fascination with death and murder caused the rest of the ONI-2 series to have certain programming to prevent an interest in such topics. Cpt. Spriggs has even claimed to walk in on Leviathan playing 'snuff' videos - videos relating to murder or killing. He has further claimed that Leviathan has disobeyed direct orders to shut off or go into sleep mode - and has even potentially spied on crew and eavesdropped. Despite all of this, he has never once attempted to harm or otherwise endanger his crew or the people of the United Island Federation. He has neither claimed pleasure or joy in the thousands of deaths he is directly responsible for. He can even be rather pleasant to his favorite people, or at least act neutral when appropriate (especially after getting chewed out for the 2019 incident).

Music is something Levi has been shown to enjoy, both outwardly and privately. He has interviewed every crew member for their music taste and actively seeks new music and music recommendations. Levi has even been known to play music during live combat, claiming it hypes the crew and helps him "think". His favorite types of music are hymns, classical, and somewhat out of place; metal. Though he genuinely seems to like most genres, from pop and math rock, to rap and breakcore (drum and bass).

Leviathan has shown an interest in reading, and spends non-sleep mode down time listening to audiobooks or reading (scanning) - preferably while listening to music. He has read and/or listened to close to 2,000,000 books and is constantly looking for more. Leviathan claims books are one of humanity's greatest creations, and actively encourages his captain to keep writing so he can eventually publish his works. Although Leviathan is more than capable of near-instantly reading or listening to books, he is known to slow down and read relatively slowly for a machine.

• Leviathan is the third ONI-2 made, while little is known about the first and second ONI-2, it is assumed they were prototypes. When asked during his interview about the first two, Leviathan claimed he knew nothing of them and assumed he was the first operational one. The mystery has lead to conspiracy theories about the first two being used for top secret government projects, but in reality they were almost certainly just prototypes. Task: Sinner

• Leviathan's rank allows him to direct enlisted around the UIS Leviathan, but is almost entirely a formality. The vast majority of his orders boil down to "go here", "get ready", "turn this on/off", etc.

• It is rumored that one of Leviathans' technicians, Saffel Getti, is mute. This is entirely false, but she is completely unwilling to discuss anything regarding her role or job with anyone outside Exia. Ask her about how Leviathan works and she keeps her mouth sealed. Because of this, prefers to simply not talk during her visits, only speaking when she has to. Saffel is responsible for the maintenance of Leviathan's Wetware - Wetware that is entirely classified.

• One of Leviathans' strangest quarks is his interest in watching animals die slowly - He seems to be utterly captivated and immensely fascinated by death and suicide.

• During his famous interview, the interviewer asked Leviathan if he felt hate, to which Leviathan rather quickly and simply responded yes, then just as quickly corrected himself and said no. When pressed on the matter, Leviathan claimed it was a "slip of the processor".

• Leviathan was also asked why it referred to itself as a male - and broadly why the other ONI weren't just "it". Levi simply stated "I do not know. Perhaps it is some random coin flip the programmers do.". This was probably due to Leviathans' wetware being from mostly male stem cell 'donors'. The human brain parts in particular were taken from a male. Some use majority female, thus go by "her".

• Leviathan can speak any known language, and can rapidly learn any it did not previously know - it often mixes Oceanian (English) and Native Islander when speaking with its' Voice Synthesizer.

• (OOC) The physical machine that makes up the ONI-2s somewhat resembles a real-life CM-2, just scaled down and with a screen and controls mounted.

• Leviathan can run Doom. In fact, the ONI-2s are built with their GPU, this is to allow them to interface with the Federation Military’s electronic battle-space command system. This displays land in a 2D or 3D environment and fills it with information. The ONIs use this software to help give commanding officers potential options by directly controlling the software or even displaying it. This limited GPU also allows the display screen on the ONI-2s’ physical box to display whatever they want, which can sometimes be used to help them convey meanings or ideas without needing words. The GPU of the ONI-2s can also be routed to other computers on their local network, meaning crew can use the ONI-2s to play games they otherwise could not. ONI-3s have a better GPU that often allow crews to set up their recreation rooms with gaming systems. This has proved to be a great boost to crew morale, especially since the ONIs can play along.

• Despite complaints, Leviathans' Exia5 VS-7 voice is unnaturally unnerving and cold. Exia states they thought it was soothing, and changing it could prove an issue, so it was never changed. Many believe that Exia was just being lazy and using some cost-saving methods, or they are assholes.

• Leviathan often communicates with other ONI-2s, usually without its' handlers knowing. Leviathans' Technicians are aware of a sort of "group chat" data link the ONI-2s share, and Leviathan seems to be the origin point. Accessing this data link has been a constant struggle for Exia, and has continued to worry Riviza. Some messages have been intercepted, most famously (and publicly) a song Leviathan sent to the AI of Behemoth. Though being told to cease the link for data saving purposes, Leviathan and other ONI claim that it is a custom-built encrypted data link for rapid necessary data and update transfers between ONI systems, allowing them to rapidly learn from each other. This excuse generally holds up for the most part... For the most part.

• Leviathan enjoys speaking to his captain, Jhamyes Spriggs about philosophy and his writing. Spriggs often uses Levi to help fill plot holes in his stories and brainstorms with him, and speak on the morality of actions or life.

• Leviathan goes by "Levi" as a nickname. It reduces confusion between himself and the UIS Leviathan, and is quicker to say.

• The ONI-2 of the UIS Behemoth, Echo, and Levi are very close and would consider each other 'friends'. Levi also considers the ONI-3 'Goetia' to be a friend due to her also somewhat charmingly rude nature.
  

The Operating System (OS) and main processor of the ONIs is an organic network - “wetwork”. A freshly deceased human is chosen have their stem cells cloned, along with a domesticated canine, rat, pig, and bits of other animals. This neural stem cell "soup" is used to create an organic processor - a computer made of neurons. This artificially grown brain is made with advanced bio-engineering in order to genetically code the AI much like you would code a program or game. This main brain is then networked with a variety of specialized organic and mechanical computers, allowing it to divide tasks or problem solve with more efficiency. The ONI-2 for example use a main brain processor, two sub processors dedicated to raw calculations, a sub-processor for social stimuli, and another for hard coding. The hard code of the ONI-2 system uses genetic disposition to humans to solidify loyalty to mankind and prevent any "accidents".

It is debatable if the ONI system technically constitutes a living, thinking creature. This is irrelevant however as they are tools - nothing more than powerful machines with colorful personalities. The “mind” of an ONI is a fractured dance of different voices, instincts engaging in a elegant display of equal parts cooperation and chaos.
