The Republic of The Brague is a very large, efficient nation, renowned for its barren, inhospitable landscape, irreverence towards religion, and complete absence of social welfare. The hard-nosed, hard-working, democratic population of 195 million Helshmen are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The minute, pro-business government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Industry, Defense, and Law & Order. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 5.0%.

The powerhouse Helsh economy, worth 13.7 trillion guilders a year, is driven almost entirely by the private sector, which is broadly diversified and led by the Book Publishing industry, with major contributions from Arms Manufacturing, Door-to-door Insurance Sales, and Woodchip Exports. Average income is 70,414 guilders, but there is a large disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 330,079 per year while the poor average 8,958, a ratio of 36.8 to 1.

Old dogs don't have to learn new tricks but they have to prove they haven't forgotten old ones, the military is recruiting war criminals to join its weapons research teams, foreign despots proudly bandstand on Helsh airwaves, and Jack Russells have proven to be terrible spies. Crime, especially youth-related, is a problem, with the police force struggling against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. The Brague's national animal is the musimon, which can occasionally be seen sifting through garbage in the nation's cities.

The Brague is ranked 13,118th in the world and 310th in the West Pacific for Largest Publishing Industry, scoring 9,254.19 on the Bella Potter Productivity e-Index.
