Tekniania City
Tekniania City is situated on the island of Kivoli, around the centre of the Teknianian Archipelago. It is a tropical island, with the island covered in dense forests and small rivers, allowing for a diverse wildlife. The island was formed as a result of a supervolcano eruption roughly 27 million years ago, leaving behind large amounts of volcanic rocks. To the south of the island is the inactive volcano itself, now named Mount Munboia. On its slopes is the Mount Munboia Natural Park, which, ever since the Natural Preservation Act of the 4th Teknianian Council, has been virtually untouched by humans, save for the occasional visit by scientists.
The city, as well as the entire island, play host to the largest population centre in the country, with 6 million Teknianians living there. Most have homes near the coasts, allowing them all easy access to the tropical waters.
The City itself has forbidden the building of skyscrapers, to keep the skies clear and make everyone more equal. It has also forbidden most people, with the exception of politicians, from living in the city centre, meaning that almost all people commute in to work. Due to the country forbidding cars, bicycles are extremely popular, and the bike lanes during the morning rush hour are full to the brim.
Another option for those who do not wish to bike to work is the extremely well developed metro network. Managed by Transport for Kivoli, the network maintains 12 lines, extending all across the island, and even to some of the nearby smaller islands. In addition to maintaining the metro, it also maintains an extensive trolley bus and tram network, however, the trolley buses are gradually being phased out in favour of trams.
The City hosts all major Government buildings, aside from the Outer Islands Council and the Teknianian Defence Forces, which are situated elsewhere, on more heavily protected islands.
The General Council of Tekniania has a large building in the geographical centre of the City, with extensive gardens surrounding it, called the Council Gardens. However, more about it shall be revealed in further Factbook entries.
Around the Council Gardens, the various Departments of the Council maintain their central buildings, with each one tasked with building its own, thus ensuring a diversity in the architecture. For example, the Department of Peace has had their building in a modern building style, while the Department of Justice has gone with a Gothic Revivalist style.
For the protection of the tropical island from floods and tsunamis, many raisable floodwalls and floodmoats have been built. The Central Floodwall is a massive, 30 metre tall wall which can be fully raised in 5 minutes. It sits at a radius of 10 kilometres from the geographical centre of the city, thus protecting most of it. Just outside it is the Central Floodmoat, which is 5 metres deep and 10 metres across, thus, it can hold 3,143,163 cubic metres of water.
In the event that a flood or a tsunami is incoming, all islanders are issued with a location within the city they must report to within an hour of a warning being sent out, after which the Floodwall is raised. If the order to evacuate is given, all possessions, except those with great material or psychological worth, must be left behind.
As the centre of the Teknianian economy, the City plays host to many major companies, both state- and privately-run. Due to the height restrictions imposed by the City Council, these companies keep their buildings short, but large. For example, Tekniania Arms, the largest weapons producer in the country, maintains a massive compound as their HQ, which is only two stories tall.
As an export, the island has a sizeable fishing industry, with 3 thousand tons of fish passing through its ports daily. As such, the island also has an exquisite seafood scene, with virtually any type of fish available fresh at any time of the day.
As the island is practically a minor utopia, the culture is extremely lively, with many galleries, museums, massive nightclubs, operas and ballets. Most people spend their evenings in these. As such, most Citiers (as they are known across the nation) are extremely well versed in popular culture and in the arts, with many producing works of their own and showcasing them both in their homes and in the many galleries, many of which specialise in amateur art.
