Etymology

The term "Solgav" has existed for thousands of years to describe the people living within the Solgavish Lands. The general consensus amongst linguists is that the term evolved from the ancient phrase Sulva Gofdt, meaning: "Forest Dweller", as ancient Solgavs often formed communities deep in forested regions, and described themselves as such.

In the Medieval Period, Goths began to refer to the Solgavish Lands as "Land der Solgavden", with Solgavden serving as the plural for Solgavish people. Solgavden soon became the preferred way to reference the area by most foreigners, and once nationalistic sentiments rose in the 19th Century, Solgavden became the de-facto name for the potential nation.

A popular misconception of the term is that "Solgav" is derived from "Súllga", the pagan goddess of the harvest and motherhood, but this has since been disproven.

History

Throughout most of its history, Solgavden was nothing more than a collection of various states, such as the Kingdom of Melvenia, Kingdom of Asiland, Duchy of Höjmark, and the Republic of Orlisia. The Solgavish states were united under a single banner for the first time through the League of the White Cross, where they valiantly fought off a foreign invader. After which, the desire to unify the Solgavish Lands didn't resurface until the rise of nationalism in the 19th century, and it became a matter of when, and not if, Solgavden would become a united nation. Out of the states that make up modern Solgavden, only two had the means to unite the country: The Kingdom of Melvenia and the Kingdom of Asiland.

The latter half of the 19th Century featured a series of wars in order to determine which ruling house would dominate the proposed nation in a period known as The Solgavish Wars of Unification. Melvenia would reign victorious, and their royal dynasty continues to rule Solgavden to this day. However, this new nation was still unstable, and after hastily being thrust into a global war, the kingdom collapsed into a protracted civil war between those loyal to the crown (dubbed the Loyalists), and those that sought to dethrone the plutocratic monarchy and install a republic in its place (dubbed the Republicans). After years of intense fighting, four leaders from both sides, including King Halfdan IV, sat down in a quiet countryside cabin and hammered out an agreement known as the Log Cabin Treatise. The rudimentary document ended the civil war, and created the framework for the current constitution.
