How has Pulsroth's glorious government came to be?

Pulsroth's original ruling party, the Pulsrothi Radical Party or PRP, gained power upon our country's graceful departure from the British Empire in July 1985.

The Most Honourable of All, Sir Llewellyn Mead of the PRP, was our nation's most legendary leader, initially serving as the most prominent MP of Pulsroth's pro-independence movement, which first led to his appointment as Pulsroth's 2nd directly elected governor from 1977, then as our first Supreme Minister from 1985 to 2007. Widely considered Pulsroth's founding father, he contributed heavily to the country's future success, and maintains significant respect amongst the conservative population. Upon Mead's resignation in late 2007, there were long and whispered discussions regarding who should represent the PRP going forward. The party eventually put forward The Banished Patrick Dansey-Beck as its new leader, who subsequently won the 2008 snap election with a landslide victory.

However, despite significantly improved civilian freedoms during this time, it gradually became clear that the honour and staunch discipline synonymous with the PRP under Llewellyn Mead's long leadership had several severe knock on effects for a more liberal Pulsroth ruled under Dansey-Beck, as the party frequently found itself involved in several high profile scandals, one of which led to the party's almost complete collapse in 2011. This event resulted in the entirety of Pulsroth being plunged into martial law, especially in the country's heavily industrialised north-west, where the ruling party had their strongest support. The subsequent protests and riots led to the deaths of around 9,400 people, possibly far more.

This situation was sustained until 2013, when the Pulsrothi 21st Century Meritocrats or PM-21 rose from the ashes of the PRP under economist and former finance minister Meri McMillan, one of Llewellyn Mead's greatest allies, yet not afraid of reforming such a structure when necessary. McMillan instituted a strict constitution for future politicians, including holding such positions to the highest standards of morality, forming an independent judiciary, reinstating the traditional Rangātira head of state as a second arbiter of law and drafting a sensible mix of personal freedoms common under Dansey-Beck, and authoritarian rule previously common under Mead. As such, despite the extensive use of previously unseen security measures across the country in the early years of her rule to curtail any further violence, McMillan is widely credited with rebirthing Pulsroth from the brink of collapse, and she remains highly regarded today. So significant was her role in modern Pulsrothi history, she was awarded the nation's highest civilian honour, the Order of the White Lark in 2037.

In the 27 years since her rise to power, PM-21 have dominated the country's political landscape, with significant majorities in every election since. Meri McMillan was replaced as Supreme Minister in 2031 by Yoshimura Miller, our first leader from the native minority population, and following his death in 2035 by Laura Hickling-Norder, who has led the nation through an era which has so far seen Pulsroth hosting the Winter Regatta and establishing diplomatic ties with the newly formed Pacific Islands Alliance.
