The United Socialist Republics of Provincial America is a massive, cultured nation, ruled by President Leonard Davos with an iron fist, and renowned for its museums and concert halls, multi-spousal wedding ceremonies, and flagrant waste-dumping. The hard-nosed, cynical population of 1.81 billion Americans are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

The medium-sized, corrupt, well-organized government juggles the competing demands of Industry, Defense, and Law & Order. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Washington DC. The average income tax rate is 47.1%, but much higher for the wealthy.

The frighteningly efficient American economy, worth 189 trillion Dollars a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a slick, highly efficient, broadly diversified black market in Arms Manufacturing, Retail, Information Technology, and Furniture Restoration. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 104,877 Dollars, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.4 times as much as the poorest.

Thousands of picky mothers-in-law have been recruited to serve as even pickier cookery instructors, money can't buy happiness but it can buy immunity to prosecution, invasive drug testing is now performed at elementary school sports days, and an increasingly villainous series of sports coaches are demanding the national mascot's true identity. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Provincial America's national animal is the Bald Eagle, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to toxic air pollution, and its national religion is Christianity.

Provincial America is ranked 123,410th in the world and 103rd in Soviet Democracy for Largest Basket Weaving Sector, scoring -2.65 on the Hickory Productivity Index.
