Administrative divisions of Plaetopia
IntroductionAfter the 2001 Plaetopian Constitutional Crisis and the approval of the 2002 Constitution, Plaetopia transitioned from a unitary to a federal state. 5 states were established keeping the borders of the 5 regions existing at the time.
Each state has its own government, president and parliament, 10 delegates in the 50-seat Council of States (legislative upper house), can set its own flag (which, however, must depict the southern cross and have a 3:5 proportion) and regional languages, and has its own police force and taxation system.
States are divided into provinces, which are further divided into municipalities.
The federation is slightly asymmetric, granting more competences to the State of Cureira, which has its own Constitution subordinated to the Plaetopian Constitution.
The 5 States
All 5 states have kept their pre-2002 borders, even after the transition to federalism. No states actually share land borders, with each cromprising one or several main islands of the Plaetopian Archipelago:
