Cosmocracy

The Cosmocracy, sometimes also referred to as the World Government and the Second Salubrian Empire, is an autocratic power mainly situated in North Africa, South America, and East Asia. Formed in the immediate aftermath of the Madrophelian conspiracy, the Cosmocracy represents a radical reformulation of the Oranic state aimed at successfully instigating the Salubrian interpretation of the Panoic Prophecy.

Etymology

The Cosmocracy comes from the Oranic term Cosmocratia meaning "world government", itself coming from the title Cosmocrator meaning "ruler of the world".

Originally a title by which Gnostics referred to the Demiurge or God of the Old Testament, the Salubrian Church ultimately adopted this name for the new Oranic state to better reflect its expansionist ambitions of serving as the Earth's sole national government and as a nod to Crymenathea's overtly anti-Christian themata.

The Orange Creek, the core territory of the Cosmocracy, takes its name from the Oranic term Portocale Riaco, which was the ancient name of a tributary of the legendary River Aperant. The tributary, widely noted by Classical historians for its characteristic orange color, was said to have maintained heavy deposits of mar which helped manifest its appearance.

Originally coopted as a poetic term for the old Aperantian state, the Primogleon dynasty came to adopt this name for the entire North African region following their victory against the Tretholeon dynasty as a means of distancing itself from the Hellenistic, polytheistic Neo-Mycenaean state.

History

The earliest evidence of Oranic activity in North Africa dates to 1500 BC, during which time a Semitic millenarian sect known as the Aperantians first appeared in written records. Widely reputed to be the earliest known stage of the Crymenathean Church, the Aperantians migrated out of the Central Nile where they established an organized theocratic society under the leadership of an Archomath or "first learner".

Aperantian Kingdom

During the violent Late Bronze Age collapse that saw the decimation of several early civilizations in the Near East, a massive population of Mycenaeans fled Greece and were assimilated into the Aperantian Kingdom, which mysteriously survived the collapse and went on to unify much of North Africa. During this tumultuous period, the Mycenaeans brought with them the ancient Hellenic script as well as the concept of the palace economy, along with a large number of literature and technology.

At the height of Aperantian domination in North Africa, the nation would be split into three distinct cultures: The mainline Semitic Aperantians, the western line Berber Aperantians, and the southern line Egyptian Aperantians. Though functionally independent from the other, all three Aperantian tribes retained loyalty to a single central authority in what would become a very early example of a confederation.

Neo-Mycenaean Empire

The Aperantian Kingdom would disintegrate in 1086 BC following the death of its last Archomath, known today only by his moniker as the "Agent of Minerva", upon which the many North African tribes previously subjugated by the Aperantians declared independence. Of the three major Aperantian lines, only the Western Aperantians successfully survived past this date and would remain so for the next millennium. In addition, a minor religious sect known as the Minervans occupied the original site of the Aperantian Nile and attempted to preserve the institution of the Archomathate, but were overcome and destroyed by the resurgent Egyptian Kingdom.

In the 900s BC, another wave of Mycenaean refugees would enter North Africa and established a settlement in Northern Egypt, inheriting many of the technologies once maintained by the Aperantians and merging it together with newer technologies brought out of Greece. In addition, tradition maintains that Ento the Old would appear in this period as a human, and aid in the formal reorganization of the Aperantian faith into what is now known as the Church of Crymenathea. Through Ento's leadership, the Mycenaeans would attempt to restore the old Aperantian lands culminating in the Battle of Tanis in 810 BC that saw the final destruction of Ancient Egypt and the formal establishment of the Neo-Mycenaean Empire.

This period between the 900s and the 800s BC is notable for the Great Marring, an episode in North African history that saw the spread of the infamous Marring Plague, a disease caused by excessive exposure to an Aperantian mineral known as "mar". Though population decline from the Great Marring greatly weakened the region, historians believed it aided the Neo-Mycenaeans to establish total domination over the region.

First Oranic War and Rome

The Neo-Mycenaean Empire was destroyed in 350 BC by a Macedonian army led by Alexander the Great and Hephaestion, which lead to the establishment of Ptolemaic Egypt as well as a host of Neo-Mycenaean rump states. Among the most prominent of these rump states would be the Tretholeons, Primogleons, Cirrholeons, and the Execleons, which all fought with one another for control of North Africa in what became known as the First Oranic War.

According to most modern scholars, the First Oranic War represented a watershed moment in history as it saw the true, final destruction of Aperantian Civilization brought about by the infamous Tretholeonic Siege of Aletia. Such event would be significant as it would see a sudden shift in the nomenclature of the Neo-Mycenaeans, who began to refer to themselves as "Oranics" in honor of the Orange Creek, a sacred body of water in Aperantian civilization.

The war ended in a stalemate, with the Primogleons and the Tretholeons agreeing to a ceasefire after destroying its other competitors. Such peace would last until 30 BC, which saw the sudden annexation of Ptolemaic Egypt by the Romans as well as the demise of the Epistorids, a Crymenathean Berber dynasty that had acted as a buffer state between the Tretholeon and Primogleon states. Roman encroachment upon Oranic soil would intensify during this period, culminating in the disastrous Battle of Sabratha which would firmly establish Roman rule in North Africa.

Post-Roman Africa

Upon the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 AD, the Primogleon and Tretholoen dynasties would be quick to rebound to attempt to reconquer lost territory, with the Tretholeons migrating westwards to occupy what is now modern-day Morocco and the Primogleons taking power in Tripolitania. Power in the region would be contested between the Oranics, the Vandal Kingdom of Africa, and the Eastern Roman Empire until 640 AD, upon which the Tretholeons successfully destroyed the Vandal Kingdom while the Primogleons would diplomatically annex Egypt on behalf of Byzantine Emperor Heraclius following the weakening of the Eastern Roman Empire.

Inheriting a complex and highly urbanized network of Roman roads and cities, the Tretholeons and Primogleons would reorganize themselves into the Kingdoms of Geoluread and Porcalia respectively, which is believed to be the earliest "true" Oranic states ever established. Unresolved disputes fostered during the Roman occupation, specifically with regards to the borders of each nation, directly lead to the Second Oranic War.

Primogleon Rule

Marked by the appearance of heroic figures such as Saint Carthus and Saint Carthicus, the Second Oranic War would become a mythological tale of its own and lead to the end of Tretholeon rule in North Africa, with the successful Primogleons of Porcalia seizing power over and unifying the nations into the Kingdom of the Orange Creek in 850 AD.

Primogleon power would be abruptly shattered in 1333 however by The Day, a failed Crymenathean ascension project that saw a massive explosion cover the entire kingdom in mar, commencing yet another severe period of Marring that virtually destroyed the North African surface. After centuries of rigorous campaigning by the Salubrian Knights, a chivalric medical institution established by Saint Salubrius, the Second Marring would finally end in 1515 AD. However, the victory permanently crippled Oranic power and led to the premature end of its medieval period.

Post-Day

Requiring time to restore and regenerate its lost power, the Kingdom of the Orange Creek began the mass construction of various underground facilities in the early 17th century in order to house the last vestiges of its Oranic population, which saw the total disappearance of the Oranic people from the inhabitable North African surface and the creation of what is now famously known as the Oranic Underground.

The Orange Creek would remain in stasis underground for the next half-century, miraculously evolving its own technologies almost at the same pace as the rest of the world thanks to its own powerful natural resources before finally gaining contact with the rest of the galaxy in the 22nd Century, leading to the rapid rise of the Orange Creek as a galactic contender in international politics.

Politics

The Cosmocracy maintains an autocratic system of government, with virtually unlimited power vested in the hands of the Cosmocrator, who serves as the head of state of the nation. Adapted from traditional Oranic succession rules, the office of the Cosmocrator is an elective position restricted to agnatic members of the Primogleon dynasty. The current Cosmocrateira (female form) is Madrophela Primogleon, who has ruled since the founding of the country.

Executive and legislative responsibility over the Cosmocratic government is managed by the Cosmocratic Constituent Assembly, a non-elected interim body composed of Primogleon princes, clerics, technical experts, and local governors tasked by the Cosmocrateira with drafting a new constitution for the state. Since the beginning of the Cosmocracy's wars of expansion, the Constituent Assembly has been indefinitely prorogued by the Cosmocrateira, though its members still meet in ad hoc sessions to maintain a cohesive cabinet.

Control over the Cosmocratic Constituent Assembly is managed by the Prime Minister, who is appointed by the Cosmocrator and serves as the head of government of the country. Ostensibly, the prime minister requires the confidence of the Constituent Assembly to remain in power, though in practice it has never contested any prime-ministerial appointments. The current Prime Minister is Archandrite Abelimus, who was appointed to serve in that position shortly after the formation of the Constituent Assembly's formal political blocs.

Aiding the Prime Minister is a number of cabinet officers known as the ministers, vested with control over various government ministries that serve various specific purposes. Quite unusually, the Prime Minister does not select their own cabinet but instead acquiesces to recommendations made by the Church of Crymenathea, which maintains a master list of candidates that correspond to the directors of the nation's various arantist corporations.

Currently, the Cosmocratic Cabinet is composed of the Ministries of External Affairs, Public Safety, Corporations, Justice, Education, War, Transportation, Religion, Health, Technology, Social Welfare, and the Colonies. Each ministry has its own set of departments that serve specialized tasks as well. Virtually all posts are currently occupied by the directors of Cosmocratic arantist corporations with similar functions, or are otherwise managed by members of the Primogleon dynasty as de facto pensions in exchange for past services to the state.

The most basic political unit of the Cosmocracy are the arantist corporations, a series of social institutions meant to represent the various trades, industries, fields of study, and cultures within the Cosmocracy. Each corporation is led by a director, appointed by the Crymenathean Church, who maintains near-unlimited control over the transfer of resources within their respective corporations. Since the establishment of the arantist system, the Corporation of Theology has always been the most powerful corporation, being run ex officio by the senior-most members of the Crymenathean Church.

Except for the Primogleons, it is unofficially mandatory that those wishing to serve in the Cosmocratic government must enter into the service of the Church, which can be done through a rigorous application period beginning with a three-year preparatory academic course, which all human-converts of Crymenathea are eligible to apply for. At the end of this study, applicants are tasked with creating a magnum opus before becoming a cleric, the range of which can extend from simple experimental designs to complex technological development.

Upon acceptance, clerics are put as residents in any of the various Crymenathean sanctuaries, with their work becoming tied to the ministries or corporations of the Cosmocracy in accordance with the branches of science that each cleric fulfills. Oranic clerics are additionally de facto assigned to participate in the local councils of the country's lower level administrative divisions, acting as regional governors on behalf of the Cosmocracy.

Demographics

The Cosmocratic Province of the Orange Creek sustains a population of nearly 13.4 billion as of 2425, and it is estimated that anywhere between 70% to 80% of all Oranic residents may have Neo-Mycenaean origins, with smaller estimates recorded for those of Egyptian, Berber, Italic, and Semitic stock. The Primogleon kin group is believed to be of Hellenized Phoenician origins.

The Province of the Ocean Sea and the Province of Iberia both share mixed Iberian, Zarbikian, and Khalian ethnicity, with some minor incidences of Dutch and German genetics also occurring within its population due to the Great Germanization. The Province of Serica is majority Chinese, though with significant Tibetan, Apollonian, and Mongolian minorities.

The surface of the Orange Creek is also recorded to have a number of residents with Germanic origins, possibly descending from the Suebi and Vandal tribes that settled in North Africa during the decline of the Western Roman Empire. This ethnic make up is most pronounced along the coast near Carthage, which is also believed to have been the headquarters of the Crymenathean Church during the reign of the Suebi Archandrite, Romarigus, in the early 7th Century AD.

Language

Oranic is the official language of the country, being a standardized version of the Neo-Mycenaean langage. Oranic is heavily used in government, education, media, and business, with varying dialects often used together across the various dominions of the Cosmocracy and the Crymenathean Church. The Cosmocratic government specifies the Latin script of the language, though with special status also assigned to the traditional Hellenic and Phoenician scripts.

Three other languages are also given special status by the Cosmocracy, which serve as auxiliary official languages in various media of instruction: Greek, Latin, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, and English, along with various other specific dialects of each that remain prevalent in various regions, especially on colonial settlements.

Religion

Officially, all Cosmocratic citizens are Crymenathean, with all other religions banned under Ecclesiastical law. The Cosmocracy refuses to classify citizens according to those practicing the Orthodox and Salubrian interpretations of Crymenathea, instead simply maintaining that these all cumulatively signify a single, cohesive faith.

It is believed that the Cosmocracy also maintains a small population of Christians, primarily Coptic Orthodox, which continues its religious practices in the ruins of the old city of Alexandria, though information on their exact numbers remain unclear due to years of warfare on the Oranic surface and poor record-keeping by adherents.
