Odelinor

Odelinor, officially known as the Evinarate of Odelinor, is an island nation in The North Pacific. With a population of approximately 463 million spread across 5,503,126 km², Odelinor is one of the most populous countries in the world. It shares maritime borders with Russia to the north-west and the United States to the north-east, as well as having coasts on the Bering Sea to the North and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Odelinor comprises of eight Regions and four hundred sixty-three Domains.

Humans first migrated to Odelinor between 25,000 and 24,000 years ago, crossing the continental ice bridge that existed at the time. In the 7th century BC, a confederation of Bronze Age states was formed in the Iindir Valley, known as the Confederacy of Iinidir. The Mor'lok War between Iinidir and the city-state of Wesley that began in 106 BC ended in 10 AD with Un'Forana Zedelon of Wesley declaring a unified Evinarate. Evinar Un'Forana Zedelon put the entire continent under the control of her empire, as well as making sweeping reforms that established a basis for modern Odelinoran culture and politics. In 928 a civil war broke out between the Traditionalist and Progressivist factions of the Empire, a conflict which would end with a Progressivist victory in 934; this was when the Great Treatise, a constitution establishing a republic, was created. In 1853 the Constitution was written into law, creating the modern Odelinoran state.

Odelinor is a Representative Democracy and a Technocratic Republic as established in the Second Treatise of 1853. It is considered a great power, though it has traditionally played a mediating role in international conflicts. It is a founding member of the United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, G8, G21, and the East-West Cooperation Organization, as well as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The country ranks among the highest in international measurements of government transparency, civil liberties, quality of life, economic freedom, and education. It is ethnically and racially diverse, due in part to the Immigration Act of 1952, in which the government greatly increased investment in immigration incentives for foreigners.

A highly developed country, Odelinor has one of the largest economies in the world. The Odelinoran economy is a mixture of capitalist and socialist policies that spans centuries, a result of the Technocratic nature of its government. The countries abundant resources fueled its rapid growth for much of the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, but in modern times the economy is fueled by the Technology, Finance, and Manufacturing sectors. Military spending in Odelinor is high at 2.3% of GDP, and it has one of the most advanced armed forces in the world because of that. Odelinor has a rich culture, known for its art, cuisine, music, and popular culture, including its prominent film and publishing industries.

Etymology

The name "Odelinor" was coined by Evinar Un'Forana Zedelon as a name for her new Evinarate; it translates roughly from Old Oshinar into "Our Land." Before that the subcontinent did not have a singular name; it wasn't until the Evinarate that a single power came to control the entire landmass. This name was kept in the Great Treatise, and in the Odelanoran Constitution, "The Evinarate of Odelinor" was established as the official name of the nation.

A citizen of Odelinor is referred to as an "Odelinoran," although the term "Evinaratian" is also accepted and widely used. Although it shares its name with the subcontinent it resides on, the name "Odelinor" rarely refers to anything but the Evinarate; when speaking of the subcontinent of Odelinor, it is common to say "the subcontinent."

History

Prehistory

Archeological evidence suggests that Palaeolithic humans first populated the subcontinent of Odelinor between 25,000 and 24,000 years ago when they crossed over the land bridge connecting Asia and North America. By the 12th century BC, they had formed into loose hunter-gatherer societies. Artifacts from this age, such as the Appeal to a Goddes sculpture, are evidence that people on the subcontinent had begun to develop primitive cultures and religions. Around 10,000 BC, humans began to congregate in settlements and started to develop early agricultural techniques. Many historians believe that it was during this period that the rudiments of Old Oshinar began to develop.

Tranquil Era & Mor'lok War

In the 7th century BC, a group of Bronze Age states in the Iinidir Valley formed a Confederacy, known today as the Confederacy of Iinidir. Around this same time, the city-state of Wesley was also growing in power. The period from 700 BC to 106 BC is known as the Tranquil Era. This period is characterized by the emergence of early Odelanoran culture and great advancements in technology, including the invention of the plow and the hang glider. The two major empires of the subcontinent, Wesley and the Confederacy of Iinidir, grew wealthy through a combination of conquest and trade.

The Tranquil Era ended in 106 BC with the beginning of the Mor'lok War, a conflict between Wesley and the Confederacy of Iinidir. The war forced both states to focus on wartime production, and cultural advancement came to a halt. After 116 years of fighting, the war ended when Meditist Un'Forana Zedelon infiltrated the Iinidirian political system and took power. She merged the two warring nations, creating a new state under her rule; the new state was titled the Evinarate of Odelanor, and she was the Evinar. In addition to her political changes, she established Meditism as the state Philosophy, ensuring its place as the foundation of Odelanoran culture.

In 54 BC, during the Mor'lok War, Hel'Denevar Mediti was imprisoned at the Rock Prison and wrote his famous text, The Eight Ideals. In it, he laid down his philosophical worldview and the titular Eight Ideals. After his release in 32 BC, he founded Meditism, a philosophy that still guides modern Odelanoran society.

The First Evinararate

The rule of Evinar Un'Forana Zedelon lasted for 40 years, ending with her death in 50 AD. It was characterized by sweeping social and economic reforms, as well as a considerable expansion of the Evinarates borders. These reforms included the establishment of the Eight Ideals as national law, the formation of a semi-democratic Representative Council, and the creation of a currency system; the Osha. The Evinar also instituted a policy of equality, which radically changed Odelanoran society and culture.

After the death of Evinar Un'Forana Zedelon, her daughter Un'Ferza Zedelon became Evinar. She continued her mother's legacy, and Odelinor entered a Golden age. The subsequent generations of Evinars expanded the borders of the nation rapidly and continued to enact social changes through reform. By the 8th century, the Evinarate had reached its pinnacle; sexism, racism, and homophobia were unheard of, and the average Odelanoran was prosperous. The massive public education institution had spearheaded a technological revolution. In 761 Evinar Gro'to Helenor established a port on the Inidalay Archipelago and began building a fleet; in 791 he began to send expeditions into the wider world. By 900 they had discovered Japan, Eastern Siberia, and the Indigenous People of North America.

In 891 the Japanese Empire launched an invasion of Odelinor from the west. The invasion was repelled quickly, but while the military was engaging the Japanese a movement of Progressivists took control of the capital. This began the Odelanoran Civil War, a conflict that lasted for 43 years and tor the nation in half. It ended in 934 with a Progressivist victory, but the country had endured an economic and societal collapse that would take centuries to recover from. The Great Treatise that was written after the war established the Second Evinarate, a successor state to the First Evinarate that instituted a more democratic system, created the Tribunal and made the position of Evinar anonymous.

Reconstruction & European Contact

The period between 934 and 1529 in Odelinor is known as the Reconstruction. This era began with the signing of the Great Treatise and the end of the Odelanoran Civil War, and the institution of a new semi-democratic system of government. During and after the war many states broke off from the Evinarate, and by 960 it was half its former size. The new Evinar, now an anonymous position, was titled "Evinar XXXVII" or "The Honourable 37th" as they were the 37th Evinar since Un'Forana Zedelon; this system of naming continues today with Evinar XCIV or The Honourable 94th. They began to reconstruct the social order and establish a more centralized government.

In the 13th century, the Evinarate began to reclaim its former territories through both diplomacy and conquest. It had grown wealthy again and had regained control of its former trading network by capturing the port city of Honomo. By 1304, Odelinor had reclaimed the entirety of the island, and the semi-democratic system that was established in the Great Treatise was finally coming to fruition. During the 14th century, Odelinor experienced a wave of cultural and technological revolutions; many historians consider the 14th century as the pinnacle of the Second Evinarate.

In 1529, Spanish explorer Álvaro de Saavedra Cerón and Odelanoran explorer Hin'Selevan Hukon spotted each other during their voyages in the Pacific Ocean. Hin'Selevan guided Saavedra to the Inidalay Archipelago and they exchanged maps; this was the first contact between Odelinor and Europe. Evinar LXI began a massive shipbuilding and exploration campaign, ending the Reconstruction and bringing Odelinor into the Age of Exploration. By 1612 the Evinarate had discovered Europe, and by 1700 it had begun diplomatic relations with the colonial powers and other states around the world. During the 18th century, the Odelinoran economy was fueled by three major trade routes; those with Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

Despite its extensive trade network and diplomatic ties, by the 19th century, it had still not gained a status as a world power. During this century it rapidly expanded its military and navy and sent them to gain experience by fighting alongside the troops of the colonial empires. On July 28, 1853, delegates from around the world, including all of the major European Powers and the United States, attended the Constitutional Conference in Wesley. It was here that the Constitution of Odelinor was signed into law; this established a solid foundation for the future of Odelinor based on the Great Treatise and the Eight Ideals, and indicated to the world that the Evinarate of Odelinor was a true world power.

Industrialization & World Wars

Since the beginning of the 19th century, Odelinor had been rapidly industrializing; the production capacity of the Evinarate had nearly septupled by 1875. Alongside this increase in production came an increase in population, from approximately 100 million in 1800 to almost 200 million in 1870. Despite this massive growth in power, Odelinors place in the global status quo had not changed; it was still considered a regional power, secondary to the Great Powers such as Great Britain, America, France, and Russia. When Evinar LXXV came to power in 1883 they began a to increase military production massively, hoping to create a force capable of enforcing the interests of Odelinor on a global level.

During the period between 1983 and 1914 Odelinor was driven towards the emerging powers of Germany and Italy, both also new nations disenfranchised by the attitudes of the Great Powers. By 1914 it had military alliances with Germany, and when Russia declared war on the German Empire on 4 August 1914 Odelinor retaliated with an official declaration of war on the Triple Entente, joining WWI on the side of the Central Powers. During the war it managed to capture vast swathes of Russian territory Siberia and defend many of Germanys colonial claims in the Pacific. When America declared war on Germany, Odelinor staged a massive invasion of Alaska, taking it after months of fighting. When Germany surrendered in 1918 Odelinor made peace with the Allies, and returned its conquered territories under duel governance. Because of its surprising victories in the War, Odelinor entered the ranks of the Great Powers; it had gained the respect of the international community.

During the 20s and 30s Odelinor found itself being driven towards the western world, particularly Canada and the United States; it increased trade with those nations greatly during the 20s. Because of this it was hit especially hard by the Great Depression, which rocked the Odelinoran economy. In 1931 the Jobs Creation Act, which created a massive workforce of government employees that were tasked with extensive infrastructure projects and increasing military production considerably. Although this did offset the worst of the Great Depression, it put the federal government in huge debt.

When WWII broke out, the Federal Government mobilized its massive civilian workforce and set it to wartime production; ammunition, weapons, aircraft, ships, tanks, and other instruments of war. These were sold to both the Axis and the Allies through the Department of Trade & Industry, which also built them. After the Attack on Pearl Harbour of December 7, 1941, Odelinor pledged to stay out of the war, but by 1942 public pressure had grown so great that it formally declared war on the Axis powers. From 1942 to 1945 were deployed to all fronts, including the Pacific Theatre, Eastern Front, Western Front, and North African Front. After the end of the war Odelinor received a portion of the new West Germany, and had the second most powerful economy in the world.

Contemporary Era

Coming out of the World Wars much better than most, Odelinor experienced a period of prosperity through the 1950s and 60s. During this time Odlinoran culture expanded his international audience; the modern Odelinoran film industry is built on the movies of that era. The industry that had been built during the Great Depression and WWII was transformed into a manufacturing behemoth, exchanging shells for staplers and artillery for automobiles.

Because of its position between Asia and North America and its hybrid web of socialist and capitalist economic policy, Odelinor found itself as a mediator between the Capitalist West and Communist East. It's place on the UN Security Council was secured when it conducted a successful nuclear test strike in Ix in 1946. In such conflicts as the Korean and Vietnam wars it was instrumental in the signing of armistice and peace deals; the Treaty of Intaria brought the Korean war to an end in 1970.

Economy

Odelinor has one of the largest economies in the world, with a nominal GDP of approximately US$16.233 trillion. It is considered a social market economy, with extreme government regulation. The Department of Trade and Industry is the governing body responsible for implementing economic policy and overseeing trade and industry in Odelinor; every registered business operating within Odelinor has a regulatory board, appointed by the aforementioned department, which has complete access to company records and operations and has a veto on all decisions made by the company. The service sector contributes over 50% of the economy, with manufacturing and information technology also being prominent industries.

Wealth in Odelinor is extremely evenly spread, due to extensive government welfare and wealth redistribution programs. The nation has one of the highest average qualities of life, and unemployment is low. Despite this, economic mobility is extremely low in Odelinor; although every citizen is guaranteed good quality of life, there is very little opportunity for economic improvement; the higher the income bracket a citizen is, the more drastically they are taxed. The governing philosophy, and the opinion of the general public, is that it is better for everyone to have a good quality of life than for everyone to have the ability to grow their wealth. Odelinor ranks lower than most developed nations in measures of economic freedom.

The Odelinoran economy began to grow rapidly in the 18th century, during which major trades routes were established with Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. The 19th century, much like the 19th century in Europe, was defined by industrialization and urbanization; the rapid development of efficient technology set the foundation for the success of the Odelinoran manufacturing industry. Odelinor came out of the World Wars with little damage, and so was able to pull ahead of its old competitors in Europe and establish itself as a larger economic power. Now, the Odelinoran economy is driven by the service sector, with manufacturing and information technology also being major industries.

Odelinor's largest trading partners are the United States, China, Canada, and the European Union. Alongside Canada, it is one of the two powers that control the Northwest Passage; its control of the Bering Strait allows it to govern trade through the passage. That, alongside its position as a landmass between North America and Asia, makes Odelinor a major world trading hub. Trade makes up a large percentage of Odelinoran GDP.
