Alaska
____________________________________________________________

The Federal Republic of Alaska, commonly called Alaska or the Alaskan Republic, is a federal republic in northwestern North America and northeastern Asia. It is bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the south by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by Canada and on the west by Siberia. Alaska covers 845,668 square miles and has has an estimated population of 1,416,027. Alaska is divided into 30 boroughs.

Originally colonized by the Russian Empire at the beginning of the 1800s, Alaska was purchased by the United States of America in 1867, and gained statehood on January 3rd, 1959. It retained this status until 2019, when it declared its independence in the wake of various supernatural events that devastated global stability. Since 2024, the former Russian territory of Kamchatka Krai has been an integrated part of Alaska, and other areas of the Russian far east are under occupation.

Demographics

Ethnically, most Alaskans are either white Americans or Russians, followed by members of the nation's indigenous tribes. There is also a large Japanese and Korean diaspora, especially in the south, as well as a sizeable African-American population.

Based on the 2025 census, 97% of Alaska's population is human. The largest non-human categories are vampires (1%), lycans (1%), and kitsune (.8%), with other yōkai/hybrids making up the remaining 0.2%.

Government

Alaska is a federal republic in which authority is shared between the federal, borough, and local levels. The federal government is based in the capitol city of Fairbanks, and consists of an executive branch (the president and those under his direct command), a legislative branch (the house and the senate), and a judicial branch. Boroughs in Alaska are analogous to states in the USA, and elect representatives to both legislative houses. Boroughs have the same territory as during statehood, and the census areas in the unorganized regions have been elevated to borough status. In Kamchatka, the boroughs have the same borders as the former Russian districts. Settlements within boroughs have their own local authorities.

At the federal level, the house and senate are currently dominated by the Libertarian and Green parties (the 'lib-green coalition'). The current president is Gallagher Blair of the Libertarian Party. The Libertarian Party is dominant in this coalition and over the past decade has drifted away from typical libertarianism in it's expansion of the military budget, and has always had to commit to environmental protection to preserve the coalition.

Foreign Relations and Military

As a major power and self-declared aspiring superpower, Alaska has relations with and embassies in most of the world's nations, and enjoys recognition from almost all as well. It is notable for being one of relatively few major nations to have official relations and embassies with some of the more peaceful supernatural-dominated nations that have arisen in recent years.

The Alaskan military is the largest in the region following the collapse of the Russian Federation, and while still dwarfed by that of the United States of America, it is growing quickly and enjoys the advantage of pre-independence American military tech.

-much more detail about the military to be added-

The Alaskan military is currently engaged in a large conflict against hostile supernatural forces in Siberia, with the goal of eliminating the threat and either creating new states or integrating territories into Alaska itself.

Alaska operates under a free market economy, with little government interference outside of environmental regulation. Rather than engaging in massive public works projects, the Alaskan government influences the direction of the economy by investing in businesses and industries that suit its needs. Investment also provides significant income to the state, allowing it to keep taxes low. The massive road building projects of the 2020s were a partial exception to the Alaskan government's usual methods, though work was subcontracted to private companies who worked closely to determine routes etc.

The bulk of Alaska's economic wealth comes from oil. Though oil production had started to lag behind in the years before independence, the discovery of massive new reserves in the north coast region has put Alaskan oil production well above any US state. Though a reserve is kept, most Alaskan oil is exported internationally. While it is expected that the oil reserves will last for many decades, the federal government has invested in renewable energy efforts to prepare for their inevitable depletion and in the interests of reducing pollution.

Tourism has declined since the events of 2019, but is still a large contributor to the Alaskan economy. The new road systems have made numerous places more accessible to tourists.

Fishing is another large industry, with exports of fish and crab bringing large amounts of wealth into the country. Due to Alaska's climate, farming is not a large enough industry to support exports, and Alaska has long had to import much of its food. The government has been investing in farms and research into new farming techniques in an effort to make Alaska more self-sufficient in this regard.

Infrastructure

For many years, a large part of Alaska lacked a road connection to the rest of the state, with large parts of the north and west effectively isolated. An early priority of the Alaskan Republic was to expand the territory's road network, with roads connecting settlements in the north and west either completed or under construction. The 'Northern Cross' initiative called for two freeways bisecting the state north-to-south and east-to-west, with Fairbanks at the center, but this was deemed unnecessary and prohibitively expensive. However, a 4-lane highway connecting Fairbanks to Nome was built as an extension of the pre-independence Route 2, providing a route to the Canadian border. Some very small or very isolated settlements are not included in the road-building plan, which has already strained the federal budget.

Alaska already had a small railway system prior to independence; the Alaska Railroad connects Seward, Anchorage, Fairbanks, and the air force base near the capitol, and carries both passengers and freight. The railway is in the process of being extended to the oil fields on the north coast, but this effort is not yet complete. Plans have been drawn up for a railway connecting Fairbanks and Nome, but no work has been done as it is believed that the new highway will be able to handle traffic for the foreseeable future. Talks with the USA regarding a railway connection have occurred, but little progress has been made due to shifting relations between the two nations and extreme instability in western Canada.

For decades the Alaska Marine Highway has provided a ferry connection between the settlements on Alaska's southern coast, from Ketchikan to Unalaska. Since independence, the line has been extended as far as Adak, the westernmost settlement in Alaska's original territory. A route to Petropavlovsk in Kamchatka is also considered part of the Highway. Before independence the line extended south to Bellingham, Seattle, and this remains the only official route between Alaska and the USA.

Although Alaska's airports are generally well-maintained, no new airports have been built since independence, as the infrastructure budget is already strained and the federal government has deemed new airports unnecessary for the time being. Air travel is completely private, with Alaska Airlines dominating commercial air travel. Smaller companies and individuals also provide transport in much of the state, either alongside Alaska Airlines or in areas not reached by it.

Few major roads have been built in Kamchatka since it joined the Alaskan Republic in 2024, as the large-scale infrastructure work in 'mainland' Alaska has already stretched the federal budget. This state of affairs has caused controversy among the region's citizens as to whether Alaska is fulfilling its promise of protecting the territory and developing it. As of 2029, however, work has slowly started to increase there, as most major road projects in the home territories have been completed. A comprehensive plan to develop the peninsula over the next decade has been released, with the federal government assuring the people of Kamchatka that they 'will not be forgotten'.

Essentially all of the road and rail construction mentioned has been done in close cooperation with private companies, with the government not willing to stray too far from its Libertarian mandate. Whether this has raised or lowered efficiency is debated.
