TITLES AND TRADITIONS

Due to the age and prestige of the United Prefectures Navy, it retains and observes many of its oldest traditions, many of which formed during the early stages of the Noronnican Empire. While deemed odd or perhaps archaic by modern standards, they are kept by sailors as a means of remembering their history and garnering a sense of belonging, as only in the Navy can recruiters be nicknamed 'press gangers' in UPN slang.

Initiation to the Navy is a central part of naval life, and new recruits gain bonds and trust with their seniors and between themselves by completing various forms of tasks or activities. The most infamous form of initiation is nicknamed, 'Stanley Where's Your Troosers?' At the end of their first day in early winter, new officer cadets at the United Prefectures Naval College must discard their trousers by the riverside and jump in the cold river while singing Stanley Where's Your Troosers and see who can finish the song in the water. If a cadet fails to finish and gets out the water early, they are given a slice of bread and a small glass of water for dinner.

Another very important tradition in the Navy is the set of drinking toasts for each day of the week. These toasts began as an informal commentary on naval life but were set in stone as time went on and as toasts became more popular in wartime to maintain high spirits. One that many people mistake is 'a bloody promotion'. While usually spoken with the intent of one finally getting a promotion, its origins stem from the fact that many sailors gained promotions during acts of heroism is bloody battles, and therefore a promotion is sought in bloody battle.

Monday

"A bloody promotion."

Tuesday

"War and a willing foe."

Wednesday

"Setting sail at last."

Thursday

"Our sailors, past and present."

Friday

"The cooks!"

Saturday

"Absent friends taken by the sea."

Sunday

"God, the Sea and Country."

The Navy also has a title system in place for is vessels and bases. Prior to 2019, the title usually began with 'Noronnican Overlord' to refer to the royal family. This has instead been replaced by United Prefectures, followed by the object which the title refers to. Ships are titled, 'United Prefectures Ship (UPS)', bases are titled United Prefectures Naval Bases (UPNB)', and air bases are titled, 'United Prefectures Naval Air Stations (UPNAS)'.

The United Prefectures Navy operates several fleets which are designated geographical areas. The Navy's fleets, however, are not independent commands. Instead, they maintain naval vessels and train them in preparation for use by the naval arm of the United Prefectures Armed Forces Regional Commands. Groups of naval vessels are assigned Task Force designations until they pass into another fleet's responsibility which replaces the group's designation.

NAVY RANKS

The ranks within the United Prefectures Navy are split into non-commissioned and commissioned, whereby those that have received a commission have completed their education at the United Prefectures Naval College and enter into the Navy as officers. Prospective recruits can either join the Navy as a seaman or if they are part of the university programme, students who have completed their naval cadet course may enter into the Naval College as an officer cadet as they have received preliminary officer training.

FLEET AIR ARM

The United Prefectures Navy Fleet Air Arm is responsible for the maintenance and operation of naval aircraft used to support naval operations from land or the Navy's aircraft carriers and AFSBs. The Air Arm can trace its roots back to 1921, when the Air Force was introduced and the Armed Forces had procured aircraft for military service. With the introduction of the first aircraft carriers and the necessity for offshore surveillance, rather than merge aspects of the Air Force and Navy, it was thought that it would more prudent to create an air service for the Fleet.
