The Mizia Armed Forces operates on four branches: Land Force, Air Force, Naval Force and the Gendarmerie. Professional soldiers comprise only 5% of the personnel; the rest are conscripts. The active strength of the armed forces is 309,567. In the past 103 years, Mizialand has never been at war save the invasion of North Posidia over the issue of slavery in 2012.
Majority of the armed force consists of conscripts. All able bodied male citizens are conscripted at the age of 18 or as soon as they finish 11 or 12 years of schooling (depends on their course of study), whichever is later. They are required to clear a physical, intellectual and mental fitness test failing which they have the option of serving in the civilian forces (such as police) or paying an additional 5% income tax till the age of 30. The service consists of three phases: Phase 1 the Boot Camp lasting 3 months, Phase 2 the Active Service lasting 18 months and Phase 3 the Revision Service where conscripts are called upon once every 5 years till they attain the age of 30 to serve in the army. Exemptions are granted only on the possession of dual nationality or for Mizia citizen residing abroad. Females are not conscripted, though they may voluntary serve in the army. All posts including combat are open to females.
The armed forces are led by the President who is the Chief of the Armed Forces (currently Pierre Vincent). The armed forces are under the control of the Ministry of Defence. The Monarch and the Parliament exercise little power over the military. In the time of war, the Ministry of Defence is named as the War Office and is headed by the President.
The Mizia land forces (also called Mizia Army) as suggested by its name is the land based division of the armed forces. All conscripts are required to serve in the army for at least one year and thus this is the largest component of the Armed Forces. A little over 3% of the army personnel are professional. Its motto is A fronte praecipitium a tergo lupi (A precipice in front wolves behind).
The army, in its present form was raised in 1824 and is thus the oldest division of the armed forces. Prior to the formation of the Kingdom, it was involved in 1st Revolution, 2nd Revolution and Mizia Civil War (for details see History). After the reconstitution of the Kingdom, they were deployed in North Posidia Invasion and held on hold during Golgoth Crisis.
The army is divided into the following corps which are further divided into regiments:
Mizia Marines (unlike most of the countries Marines are under the authority of the Army in Mizialand) responsible for amphibious assault. Any foreign deployment will be of the Marines. Unlike other corps, all marines are professionals.
Infantry, self-explanatory. This is the largest corp. It is further divided into Plain and Mountain Infantry.FELIN combat uniform
Army’s Light Aviation responsible for technical support in form of combat helicopters. The past 20 years have seen massive expansion of this corp.
Armoured Calvary Branch responsible for tank and Calvary, it operates majority of armoured vehicles. Horses are no longer used.
Military Engineers , self-explanatory
Logistics , self-explanatory
Officially, the equipment used by the Army is not made public. The discharged conscripts can provide much information about the equipment. Most of the equipment is indigenously manufactured. The FAMAS is the main service rifle of the armed forces. The main battle tank is Leopard 1 and ABAC, which is based on this.
The uniform is light blue in colour and consists of coloured kepis, sashes, fringed epaulettes, fourragères. Personnel wear different uniforms at different occaisons. The official battle gear is FELIN (pictured).
The Mizia Air Force as suggested by the name is the aerial branch of the armed forces. It is the smallest division of the military. Constituted in 1913 as the sixth corps of the Army, the Air Force was made independent in 1956. It employs 23,670 personnel and its motto is Dominus fortitudo nostra (God is our strength). Its budget of 4,5 million Euros constitutes around 30% of military budget.
The Air Chief Marshall is the highest rank in Mizia Air Force. The Air Force in divided into four Operation Commands (North, South, West and East) and two Functional Commands (training and maintenance). The Operation Commands are involved in military action (such as combat) in their jurisdiction while the Function Commands maintain combat readiness. The commands are further divided into Squadrons.
The Air Force employs two kinds of personnel:
Officers which are further classified into flying, technical and ground branch
Airmen who are responsible for air and ground operations.
The exact number of aircraft in service is officially not made public and the same holds true for other equipment. However, the Air 2010 (a policy for air force reorganization) mandates the reduction of aircraft from 591 to 291 by 2020, 384 among which have been described as “outdated” and “too dangerous and expensive to operate”. The Dassault Rafale are the main fighter aircraft of the air force. They were extensively deployed in North Posidia Invasion and Golgoth Crisis and were crucial for Mizia victory in the former.
There are 34 air force bases in Mizialand and 4 overseas. All air bases have similar kind of infrastructure. Permanent fortifications having underground air base have been established in the mountains.
Tracing its roots in the Merchant Navy of the Ancien Regime, the Mizia Navy in its current form was established in 1890. It is evidently the maritime branch of the army and according to the Ministry of Defence “strategically the most important branch of the army”. Its role has been defined as the first barrier defence and the most important component of attack. It employs 31,653 regular personnel and 1,870 reserves. Its motto is Semper Fidelis Latin for Always Loyal. Prefixes are not assigned to any vessel.
The Mizia Navy headed by the Chief of Naval Forces is divided into four branches:
Surface Force: The largest branch of the navy is responsible for different types of surface fleet. Though officially undisclosed, this branch maintains the flagship of the Navy - Amberlynn. This nuclear power aircraft was commissioned in 2014. Being a nuclear powered vessel, it has an unlimited range. Besides, this branch also maintains amphibious, sovereignty and public service ships (such as oceanographic vessels).
Submarine Force: It maintains four ballistic missile submarines and two nuclear powered submarines. It is a self-sufficient command employing over 3000 personnel.Mizia Marines in a Parade
Naval Air Force: This branch functions independent of Mizia Air Force but is “attached” to the Surface Force. It mainly operates Raffale aircraft and a large number of helicopters.
Marines: The navy operates its own marine force which consists of two regiments. Saint Louis Regiment which has 1800 men is further divided into many companies, each with varying number of personnel specializing in tasks ranging from minesweeping to imposition of embargo measures. The regiment maintains its own logistics and support battalion.
The Commando Regiment is the elite Mizia Special Operation Force. They are considered as the “Marines”. Its members are selected from the ranks of St. Louis Regiment. The infantry training is intensive and demanding lasting for 32 weeks for enlisted recruits and 64 weeks for officer recruits. They are trained to operate in a variety of environments ranging from arctic conditions to mountain warfare.
The Coast Guard is not a part of the navy. It is under the authority of the military police - the Gendarmerie.
The Gendarmerie is the para military or the military police branch of the armed forces. They were under the Ministry of Interior but in 2000 became the fourth branch of the Mizia Armed Forces thus coming under the authority of the Ministry of Defence. Their main role is policing civilian and military populations as well as assisting the other three branches of the army. It also has a special force component. It has strength of around 60,000 personnel. It assisted in the Military Coup of 1912 which overthrew the Democratic Republic and established the Kingdom. Its main functions are:
Policing small towns with population under 20,000
Providing security services to the Monarch and the President
Security of airport and military institutions
Preventing illegal immigration
Guarding the national borders, including coast guards; important public institutions; Mizia diplomatic missions abroad
Providing military police services to other branches of the army
Counter terrorism, anti-mafia and anti-drug
The Gendarmerie is headed by the Director-General who is appointed by the chief of the armed forces. It is divided into the following units:
Mobile Gendarmerie: which is mainly responsible for riot control and guarding institutions of national importance which includes Mizia diplomatic missions abroad. This unit is further divided into 5 squadrons. Each squadron is required to undergo a 10 days intensive training every 2 years to enhance and reinforce riot control skills.
Special Operations Gendarmerie: Forming one of the special operation forces of Mizialand, this unit mainly deals with counter terrorism and hostage rescue in any part of the world. Its members are selected from the ranks of other units and are required to undergo a very intensive training. They are trained in underwater swimming, hand to hand combat operations, undercover training, surviving in extreme climates such as the Arctic and deserts. The dropout rate is very high, around 90-95%.
Palace Guards: They are responsible for guarding the Royal Palace in Heleventia and some other important public institutions all over Mizialand. They also provide security services to the Monarch and the President.
Coast Guards: The Coast Guards were a part of the Navy until 1996 after which they became an unit under the Gendarmerie.
